July 2017

July 1st, 2017 Spend: £0.00   Paul popped round with his extensive tool kit and we removed the head and inspected it for damages, marks and other clues.  At first the head gasket seemed ok, and so did the pistons and valves except for a clean(ish) section on cylinder 1.       Cylinder 1 also appeared to sit a little lower than it's counterpart 4.                           Af

First Racing Incident...Ok, Crash (Now with video)

Regrettably, I have to write that I had my first racing incident at Pembrey on Sunday. The cars looking decidedly second hand at the moment as the rear offside wheel was literally hanging off. The upright had sheared in two places and will need to be repaired. I also sheared the brake line off the top of the calliper and the rear arch is completely mashed.    The race weekend started well as I finally found a hotel that’s welcoming, comfortable, with good food and not silly money. I pa

July 2017 - new seats

Few more jobs ticked off the list at the weekend New seats arrived from Intatrim (custom designed to my spec), as did the new FIA approved Scroth harnesses.  As the harnesses came with all new fixing bolts and eyelets I obviously wanted these fitted - problem number one the left hand side passenger eyelet cannot be removed without removing the rollbar. Rather than seeing this as a problem I took it as an opportunity to remove it, clean it, paint it and tidy up all the fixing bolts which

Tel's Tales Blyton July 2017

Tel’s Tales Blyton July  weekend 2017   Well as I look back at the Friday trackday (on two track layouts) plus Saturday and Sunday sprints, it seems that absolutely everyone had a fantastic weekend of motorsport, sun, bbq, gluten free meal deal, beer, buying and selling T Shirts for charity as well as support from families and club members. There was so much happening that I apologise in advance for missing or not mentioning stuff, events, praise, insults, leg pulling, car repairs

June 2017

June 1st, 2017 Spend: £25.00   When I notified the DVLA about the engine change, I got a letter back saying that they could only accept an inspection of a garage on headed paper.  Visited a few garages today and found  V-A-G Tune Services just around the corner from work who was happy to oblige to that request.  Paperwork now off to the DVLA again, so fingers crossed!   June 11th, 2017 Spend: £0.00     Free tickets to see the GT3/4 racing at Sil

Update for recent activity

A few more jobs ticked off the to do list.   Oil and filter change - after speaking to a fair few people including Technical support at Millers Oils I plumped for Millers Nanaodrive CFS 10w60 NT+ - not exactly cheap at £17 per litre but you can't put a price on looking after your engine. After identifying the filter as being from a Sierra Cosworth a quick trip to ECP got me 5 of them, they were on offer and as I intend oil changes twice per year it makes sense to have a stock of them

Pembrey Weekend 2017

Tel’s Tales Pembrey June weekend 2017   After a 7 hours 297mile drive I arrived at about 1845hrs and was pleased to see my Westfield mates had adopted the best paddock position and saved a place for my motorhome and trailer. I thought I would break out the beer but was told I could sign on and be scrutineered straight away so that was a big plus meaning a relaxing Sat morning start. Good organisation I thought……unfortunately the weekend did not run smoothly for a range of annoying

Sport E Sprinting - Full body workout and a dash to the finish

The Sport E rebuild has continued but not quite as I intended. The Sport Turbo body that I wanted to use didn't work with the 17" rear wheels also the bonnet, once fitted, didn't quite reach the scuttle. It also needed new rear lighting so in the end I opted to repair the old classic tub and replaced the smashed rear arches, nose and bonnet with less smashed parts which I then repaired and painted.   What a difference a huge amount of effort and expense makes to the look of

May 2017

May 7th, 2017 Spend: £16.95   After speaking to Graham about my 2nd gear selection issue one of the things I learned was that the Fuchs Titan Race Gear 90 LS differential oil I had put in my live axle with plated diff is the wrong one and that I should have used Castol B373.  Got 2L from Opie and replaced it today.   May 12th, 2017 Spend: £112.11   My new TPS (a Penny&Giles one) arrived from Spoox Motorsport yesterday and as I was "working from home" t

Black Flag Woes

So this was to be my first time racing at Silverstone and I was really looking forward to this race. We were to use the International circuit including the new ‘Wing’ facility (the F1 pits and conferencing facility on the floors above). The race was also to be my first with a standing start (other than sprints). All my previous races were rolling starts.   I got to the circuit on the Saturday afternoon as I had a friend racing on the National circuit over the Sat and Sun. I ‘negotiated

3 Sisters 21 May 2017

TEL's TALES 06/17   3 Sisters 21st May 2017       As most of you know the future management/liquidity of the Three Sisters venue (or parts of it) are under review and it is to the credit of Longton DMC that they managed to keep this event on. The entry was not massive so everyone was looking forward to good weather and lots of runs in the normal LDMC tradition. The weather did stay dry all day which was a bonus as some weather forecasts had predicted a bit of the wet stuff wh

Tel's Tales Snetterton May 2017

TEL's TALES 05/17 Snetterton weekend 13th/14th May 2017     Well I am just back from a great weekend run by Borough 19 at Snetterton where we had 13 speed series cars on the Saturday and 15 on Sunday so it was a good turnout and a well run event. I delivered another set of Force rims to Pete Goulding and also transported a nosecone. Despite the worry about paddock space due to a massive Mini/racing weekend on the outer track we were mostly on the tarmac apart from a few who a

Tel's Tales Anglesey 29/30 April 2017

TEL's TALES 04/17 Ty Croes, Angelsey weekend 29th/30th April 2017     This event was run by MG car club (NW) with 2 laps of the National circuit on Saturday and 1 lap of the International on Sunday. The weather for all 9 Westfield drivers was very windy and very cold but despite the weather forecast it did not rain apart from a few early showers on Saturday morning during practice.. The big bonus was that it was a medium sized entry, well run and we got loads of runs particul

April 2017

April 1st, 2017 Spend: £9.00   Paul (@black st) offered to come round to see if the car was running on all cylinders and if it did, use his synchrometer to balance the throttle bodies.  After unplugging lead no 2, it was quite clear that the problem lied there.  A quick trip to Halfords to pick up a set of spark plugs was made, but they made no difference.  New coil pack ordered, but it may well be the leads.  Also had a listen at a rattle when the engine was running and this was

First Races of the Year

So this was the first outing of the year for me in the Westie. It had been a long wait as I didn’t do too much to do to the car over the winter (or have the budget) and so it just sat in the garage gathering dust. What little work that was done to the car was a tad stressful. I dropped the car at my local motorsport garage a few weeks back, but only got it back on the Thursday night. The mechanic had a two-day race meeting over the intervening weekend and his wallet, cash and some tools were rob

Tel's Tales 02/2017 Anglesey

Tel’s Tales Anglesey 1st and 2nd April 2017     I guess that any of us involved in motorsport have a bad break, once in a while, such as my clutch issue at Rockingham but things can only get better……or perhaps not in my case. I thought that it was just an unlucky start to the season but more doom and gloom was on the horizon. It was my oldest grandaughter’s 18th birthday on the Friday so I delayed my 4 hour drive and set off at 1830 thinking I will miss the traffic on the M6. I wa

March 2017

March 3rd, 2017 Spend: £47.04   My boss told me to take days off or loose them at the end of the month (we can only carry 10 days over, and I've got 15 left), so today was a day off and spend in the garage.  Fitted some more Mikalor clamps and other minor bits that arrived during the week.  And then started on the big job ahead...  the electrics.  Managed to finish the exhaust side, although I am still some connectors short, but the wires are all in.   March 4th, 2017

Rockingham 26 March 2017

Tels’s Tales Rockingham 26th March 2017   Well what a way to start my season! Spent most of the winter putting spare engine in and doing several other mods so hoped for a good shakedown but my clutch failed to work after convoy sighting run. I was not too pleased to say the least but Steve offered me a double drive in his car so at least I would get out on track. The day was bright, warm and sunny so the other 12 competitors got ready to score good points in both Expert as well as Novi

The Wait Is Nearly Over...

Spring is finally in the air and I have been gearing up for the new season. I have registered for the Welsh Sports and Saloon Car Championship and Classic Sports Car Club (Magnificent 7's Group 2) series once again having had such fun last year. My first outing will be at Pembrey on the 23rd of April (WSSCC), then off to Silverston at the end of May (CSCC) So far I have replaced the front arches, greased the extinguisher lines, serviced the extinguisher, cut down my aero screen, about

Collection day

Insurance sorted, car paid for, train tickets bought, helmet bought, waterproofs bought - collection day was set as Saturday 25th Feb. I spend most of the week in Germany but all week long my weather forecast was prominent on my desktop in Russelsheim, not showing local German weather but the forecast for the big day in Shropshire and Leicestershire - it started off not looking good and as the week progressed the outlook became bleaker. I had promised my petrolhead 9 year old that if i

What came before

At the grand old age of 49 I knew the time was right to have another Westfield in my life. Way back when (early 2000's) I had a Lotus Twin Cam powered Westfield, bought from East Sussex but life kind of got in the way of enjoying it and it was eventually sold.  Did not have any pictures of it but bizzarely I discovered it was for sale a couple of weeks ago and only about 15 miles from where I now live in Shropshire. I did have a brief (and very enjoyable) flirtation with a Grinnall Sco

The background

The starting point was a simple one - I absolutely had no need for another car. I work in Germany 3/4 days out of every 7 and had two cars that I was (am) very happy with, an M135i and CL500 Out of the blue last week the specialist who I bought the CL from contacted me to let me know that they had just acquired a car I might be interested in - turns out it was a very low mileage S4 convertible with a full Milltek exhaust. Thought about it for 24 hours and concluded that I did not

February 2017

February 4th, 2017 Spend: £66.98   Completed engine mount alteration and now it looks like the bonnet fits, as well as having enough clearance with the alternator on the chassis.     Started on fuel lines and relocated fuel pressure regulator to the rear of the engine next to the coils by altering an IKEA fastener slightly.     Fastened the clutch and accelerator cables.  Measured up all the cooling pipe sizes so I can start ordering these
