April 2018

April 1st, 2018 Spend: £0.00   Big day today.  It is dry, almost sunny and now it is time to enjoy it!  Checked oil/coolant levels again before I started the engine and then set off to fill up with petrol 0.7m away.  1st and 2nd gear still not feel right so I returned home and adjusted the clutch cable slightly.  But it was a step too far, so undid the work and then tried to go for a longer run.  Unfortunately, the engine now kept on stalling as soon as I dipped the clutch.  Didn'

More Bodywork Needed..... Two Trophies Though (Now with Video)

So this was my first race weekend with the Caterham. I stayed locally at a hotel with my friend and with the lesson learnt from Donny a few years back I packed the earplugs in anticipation of the ridiculous snoring. Luckily I got a good night’s sleep, but woke to very dark sky’s when I opened the curtains. It just started to rain as I left for the circuit and it was not to stop until mid-morning. This was not forecast and I had never driven the car in the wet before.   Quali was very d

Rolling Road

So teamed up with the guys form NWKCOG again, and met for a rolling road day. Just a get together, see what your car ran and have a laugh, not a full day of minor adjustments to get the best. Great weather and a good turnout. Eventually it was my go Now being vertically challenged next to our rolling road supremo for the day Ade, meant I had to work the pedals in my own car. As he couldn't fit in ! Result ? Well all road vary, but those that ha

Tel's Tales Anglesey 7th and 8th April 2018

Tel’s Tales Anglesey Sat/Sun  7th and 8th April 2018 After a very disappointing Easter Monday event at Croft which was wet, freezing cold and probably should never have started about 10 drivers were entered for this LDMC extravaganza attended by approx. 70 cars. The Croft event was abandoned before any timed runs had been offered, so we all scored a miserable 75 points (I will be discarding that score). We all arrived on Friday to find plenty of room in an almost empty paddock and

First Test in the Caterham

So having bought the Caterham in October of last year, I had still yet to drive the car. As part of the purchase, I had negotiated that the seller (who runs a Caterham motorsport outfit) to attend a trackway with me to help prepare and set up the car. I booked a trackday at Donny for Friday with MSV trackdays. I can recommend to anyone with a race or sprint car to attend one of these days as they are race car friendly, in fact, most cars were race cars on the day - Mini's, Exiges, BMW's, Clios e

Few more jobs completed

Few more jobs completed.Replaced the old carbon effect front wings with 100% full carbon fibre items from Carbon NV, fabulous quality at sensible prices. Decided on the CSR style wings because the extra moulding lines at the top of the wing provide a slight but noticeable increase in rigidity.Really wanted to save the old wings as I could have sold them on but they were bonded to the brackets and the one thing I can say about Tiger seal is that once its set nothing is coming free too easily. The

March 2018

March 16th, 2018 Spend: £997.40   I picked up my engine from Jody (JA Kit and Customs) today!  Complete checked over, and with most parts replaced she almost looks like she just rolled off the factory floor.     March 17th, 2018 Spend: £0.00   With the Beast from the East making a return the conditions outside and in the garage are awful.  But I'm determined to not let it spoil my rekindling with the Westfield!  Ensured the gearbox input shaft a

Nodiz, it's alive.

It's alive. Its been a bit of a Saga, but the guys at https://motorsport-electronics.co.uk/products/ignition-only-systems/nodiz-pro/ have been great. Swapped to the Webcon trigger wheel setup, much happier with that, QED were good and refunded on their kit. Rolling road booked for 14th April !

Tel's Tales Rockingham 25 March 2018

Tel’s Tales Rockingham Sunday 25th March 2018 So the miserable cold wet winter “closed” season was over and it was a return visit to the fast circuit at Rockingham. Despite the wet weather we have had recently the forecast was ok and so the drivers were looking forward to being out on track again despite the tarmac temperature being cold. I had only changed my engine oil and put a new set of radial slicks on the car but with Steve’s car we ended up changing oil, refurbishing the starte

Sunday Jobs

My 5/8 impact socket arrived this week, so I got it into my breaker bar and got the crank pulley removed. Then got the new toothed pulley fitted, also used a new.bolt and washer, and fitted and adjusted a new gates belt. Whilst I had the bonnet off I took off the red oil catch can And replaced it with a blue one. The new can has a pipe into the can with holes drilled in it, then some wire wool to allow the oil to hold and not just vent out. I might have

The Caterham Has Landed

So on Wednesday night I finally took delivery of the Supersport. I actually paid for the car last October but I asked for a tonneau to be fitted along with a load of other jobs prior to delivery so it was delayed until now. I now have a long list of little things to do to the car to tidy it up, nothing major but I like my car's to be just so. So far all I have done is strip all the old stickers off it. This took me ages last night but I'm just about there - just need to remove the residue before

Nodiz first steps

Had a day off work today, had a few things to do, thankfully got an hour or 2 of actual free time ! So made a start on dragging the xflow into the modern era. Mounted my coil pack, using a Transit mount, and throttle position sensor, my Weber's don't have the 2 threaded holes for mounting, so got the new Dremel out and improvised.  Toothed pulley and crank sensor to go on next time I get chance, then wire up the Nodiz ECU.

Waiting in for a delivery

Being financial precautious ( my mrs calls it tight  ) , and not wanting to pay £40 extra, the new sofa we were having delivered today was due sometime today with no specific delivery slot. It arrived about 3:45 for those interested  So rather than risk a run out in the crisp sunshine, I decided to get a few little jobs done. Got round to fitting my SBFS boot tonneau. I has to use the poppers already fitted to the body, and in reality they could have done with being placed a bit lo

Last run of 2017

Put Christmas back in the loft today, and decided to get some mundane tasks done. Needed a new 2D bulb for the porch and some bulbs for the living room. Take the Westy to Toolstation seemed the obvious answer. Off with it's wrappers, started it up and off we go, it's only a quick 15 minute run, and the weather was just nice enough to enjoy the roof off without feeling too cold. By the time I leave Toolstation, the sky had turned grey and the first spots of rain were landing o

New Stuff Day

Thought I'd have a look at some of the new stuff I'd got off Santa today. Tonneau cover form Soft Bots for Sevens, I've got lots of their other bits, so decided to keep to the same company, took a couple of months to convince them to take my money ( odd business model ) but they did in the end. Took my home made cover off and offered it up. As i'd sent them measurements on 2 different occasions, I was hoping for a more tailored fit. The inboard harness eyelet area look

Santas little helper missed this one

Managed to sneak a package past Santas little helper ( aka the Mrs ) who seems to think it's OK to wrap anything bought in December and declare it not  to be opened until xmas day ! And its yet another controversial purchase. Now I have nthing against the black trim and black wheel brigade, but I'm a chrome fan And I really wanted some little sidelights to sit atop the cycle wings. Searched about and original or vintage car remakes seemed very expensive. Now whilst looki

Quick, it's not raining

Westy has been sat a couple of weeks due to work commitments, so as the rain had stopped, I whipped the cover off, gave it a quick clean and decided to go and fill it with petrol so it's ready for impromptu use. ( I normally refill after each run, but was getting late last time we were out ) Let's start her up, oh dear, this is harder than usual, feels like it's not getting enough air, and too much fuel, then I remember I have a waterproof cover over my carbs, so take that off and it fires

All Change

Ok. I didn't post a blog following my last race. I was so annoyed with myself after a very frustrating quali, where someone in a 420 just got in the way on the corners and then blocked my on the straights. On a drying track (I did try to hold back on two occasions to get some clear track) he insisted on racing me and as a result I was near the back, at a track that I know well.  I had a good start but annoyingly span at Coppice:   This sapped my confidence on a wet track

Reflecting on a mirror change

The black mirrors on my car are the next thing on my bug me list. They look rubbish and the original fitter seems to have been challenged in the use of a tap, and then self tappers ! So, grabbed a set if chrome motorbike mirrors, and in between rain showers today, have fitted on up. I'm sold on the chrome look, they suit my car better, will get the other fitted and see how they perform. It stopped raining long enough to dive out again before it goes dark

3 2 1 Ignition

The mighty crossflow runs great, I have the tickover a little higher than normal to soften out the lumpy cam, but once on the cam it goes really well. However, like a lot of crossflow uprated motors it can be an A*** to start. It's got some nice ignition parts ( for distributor style ignition at least ) fancy coil, Accuspark electronic dizzy, Accuspark leads. So it's not an out of the box 70's setup. So I've started collecting parts to update it a little Whilst I could
