Sport E Dyno Results and Electric Power

I'm busy rebuilding the battery pack with half the battery cells to reduce weight. While this is ongoing I thought I might share my dyno results from last year and talk a bit about electric power verses petrol power. The following graph shows power and torque against road speed. Remember the car has no gearbox. The motor is directly coupled to the diff. You can see that the graph ends at about 80mph. This was due to a software speed limit bug which was fixed before the sprint events. I have add

Electric Sprint Racing - Year 1

My first sprint event with the electric Westfield was at Croft. This is quite a long circuit so I wondered if one charge could last for a whole days sprinting? I also wondered what sort of reception the car would receive from the authorities. The MSA Blue Book has nothing to say about electric cars. November 2nd, 2014 Spend: £0   Now the dash is removed, I need to untangle the wiring mess. After recommendation on the forums I also removed the scuttle. October 12th, 2014 Spend: £40   I picked up a new silencer from BCF back in September which he had on his Crossflow to replace my battered example, but luck is not on my side as the link pipe on the new exhaust is different to mine and it won't clear the bodywork.     Ok, I'll remove the exhaust manifold then so I can clean it up and wrap it with some heatwrap... 12v spaghetti fest

More progress. Having discovered that the original screen washer bottle had a hole in it I ordered a nice new kit: Bag, fittings and wiring all for a very reasonable sum. As far as the MOT tick list goes, this is near the end of the jobs. A quick fiddle and one broken replacement washer jet (very cheap!) I had it fitted. The broken jet responded well to super glue but will get replaced post MOT. Now, let's pop the dash off for a look behind that to see if I can identify the mystery switches.

Ah ha! A wheel turns at last

Success! I did a little dance of joy. Having bled the newly installed brakes, we tested them on the precipitous driveway that I own. They worked fine. So, a quick tweak with the carb and some help from my daily driver lowered Micra by way of a jump start and 'we gave it life!'. I drove the car gently down the drive, testing the brakes all the way, then out of the drive and up my road a little way. Wow! It pulls fine, ran well and stopped great! To say I'm slightly excited is an understatement.

Tel's Tales 041– Ty Croes 4th & 5th Sept 2014 Well thats it......the season is over and unlike other years it did not all come down to the last weekend to see who had won! The weekend saw 19 entries on Saturday and 18 on Sunday so a good showing from the club. Amazing pace

Crack on! She said that and meant the garden, not the Westfield. So, we spent my two days off rendering garden walls. Saturday was written off too, having to visit a secondary school in the morning and a meeting for a private commission in the afternoon. Sunday (today) we laid 5m of brick paving and despite feeling physically broken, decided to do some work on the car too. Aha! Steps forward again. Having removed the master cylinder and pedal box all over again as described briefly before, I took a good look at it in order to remedy the slack pedal thingy. Having read (by accident) a report on bulkhead flex I decided to keep the strength already there but to improve it somewhat. What? No update?

No, sorry chaps (and a lady), Having got the pedal box back in and replaced the rear wheel cylinders, I set about bleeding the brakes all round. The peculiar thing is, the relationship between the brake pedal and the master cylinder has gone sour. No longer is there a good fit, the two parts seem to have drifted apart. Much confusion. Having at first thought that the push rod in the master cylinder was binding with a molecular level lump of clag, I took it off again only to find that it works j

Tel's Tales Issue 040 Thoresby Park Weekend 2014

Tel's Tales 040– Thoresby Park 13th & 14th Sept 2014 Well here was the weekend I was not sure whether to compete at. Despite its great scenery it is a tricky, very tight track and atrocious in the wet due to the overhanging trees. Well, after my many hours of toil trying to remove the nearside brake drum, I think a little Cozy would be worth listening to. It's off! Tel's Tales 039– Ty Croes, Anglesey 6th and 7th Sept 2014 The finals for this 2 day event saw 22 Westfield entrants if I include Marshall Rowland and Steve Davies in The Lotus Elise so it was a good turnout and promised some great competition in most classes. Late Friday afternoon arrival for some of us gave us time to see the end of the bike trackday before walking the course ourselves and checking the rumble strip condition and heights were the same as last year. Brakes broke

Now that the engine's running well enough to get on the road I thought it wise to turn my attention to the brakes. With the nearside rear wheel off (It's a genuine Wolfrace slot!)
