Tel's Tales Issue 029- Snetterton 2014

Tel's Tales 029– Snetterton Weekend Sprint 2014 Saturday For me this was a new venue and the weather for the weekend was perfect with it being dry and warm during both days. After Steve and I fought our way through the Friday afternoon A1, A14 and A11 traffic we parked up in the paddock to enjoy a vodka jelly curtesy of Phil Nicholls who seemed to have an endless supply. (thats why he needs a big old Landrover as his tow truck.) We could all sign on immediately so that was easy and a quick tra

Tel's Tales Issue 028- Harewood 2014

Tel's Tales 028 – Harewood Weekend Sprint 2014 Saturday This year saw a good entry of 14 cars for Saturday and 11 cars for Sunday so all we needed was good weather......enough people had obviously not said their prayers because Saturday morning saw a wet track and building clouds! Oh joy! The red kite birds were flying along the hillside enjoying the breeze (gale) but most of us were trying to keep warm in our Westfield corner of the lower paddock. This was a little tricky as a few of us had d

April 2014

April 12th, 2014 Spend: £100   Prior to collecting the car, I'd agreed to meet up with Barry as he had a lovely Aeroscreen up for sale. What better way to start ownership with your first upgrade?   April 14th, 2014 Spend: £36   Managed to snipe a brand new, never fitted leather boot tonneau cover on Ebay. Although it's designed for the single (cosmetic) rollbar, and I have an RAC one, I reckon with a little bit of DIY it can be made to fit.   Apr

Tel's Tales Issue 027- Croft 2014

Tel's Tales 027 – Easter Monday at Croft 21 April 2014 Following the 3 Sisters sprint a few people had repairs to make. Matt Turner had discovered the correct way to fit a clutch to his R1 and was back in action and I had a completely rebuilt Flatshifter fitted after it failed to provide ignition cut last time out, making gear shift slow. There were 18 WSCC drivers so a good turnout and the weather was a bit nippy but dry and at times sunny and after the earlier forecasts during the week, which

Small update

So over the last few weeks I've been doing bits and bobs to the car. First up was to test fit the box to the engine. I ended up having to modify the new bellhousing to make the clutch fork fit, which was a bit annoying as it should just be a bolt together job. I then slung the engine and 'box into the car to see how things fit. So, I can move the engine back further than the old XFlow, this helps with a bunch of stuff. It brings my shifter out from under the dash and moves the weight

Northweald Green Belt Sprint - 20th April

The last even at North Weald I left feeling a bit frustrated by the huge margin by which the others had beaten my by plus my struggle to actually put a clean lap in! I was hoping for more sun shine but the weather forecast was for rain all day, never having driven the Busa in the wet i knew this would be an interesting day should it rain. The morning was actually nice and dry for the cruise over to the event how ever as is typical 2mins before the 1st practice run the rain started... for some r

Northweald B19 Sprint - 16th March

First ever sprint in the Busa. I dont have a trailer for the Busa so i'm keeping the events I do fairly local in and around Essex, the 1st event of the year was at Northweald only 20 mins drive from home, as anyone who has raced there knows, has its own weather system but fortunately for all of us the weather was excellent. Except for giving it some welly in a straight line the Busa is so bl**dy fast that you really cant get anywhere near the limit on the road, so first practice run was really

And so it continues

Spend: £4,200   Even after I bought, spend, broken down, spend some more and sold my previous Westfield, the urge to own another one kept coming back, like a bad cold you just can't shake. So having taken care of the car situation by having a family car to drive to work in and a small city runabout for Mrs Q, there was money left in the kitty and I was back to scouring the adverts, looking for a toy.   After a few weeks, an advert popped up on Ebay and within 10 minutes of it

Tel's Tales Issue 026 - 3 Sisters 6th April 2014

Tel's Tales 026 – 3 Sisters 6th April 2014 Some of the competitors had a few preparation problems before the event including Steve Everall not being able to find any polish for his car and having the rear of the tub resprayed after a shunt last year. Matt Turner was still waiting for a new clutch which seemed to have got lost en route. I had a panic when the car would not start and I quickly traced this to a battery at 12.2 volts which will not power the MBE ECU. Nick Algar was also working unt

Background

Bit of back ground. I've been sprinting since around 2004 in a K-series S1 Elise then in a S2 111r Elise from about 2007, but in 2010 I became a dad and was getting married so the Elise had to go and sprinting was put on hold until funds and time would allow me to get out there again. Last year i managed to pursuade the wife that i should buy a new toy to get back to sprinting... after all we did now own a house with a garage and not having a car in there was obviously a crime! I knew i wanted

Out with the old...

So, about 6 months ago I bought my '91 SEi, although for 5 and a half months I did nothing with it, I didn't even remove it from the previous owners unit... I bought it to replace my Fiesta track car (that ended up seeing little track use) as its rust issues got too bad for me to warrant repairing. I had always planned on moving into a kit car eventually so I had built up a Sigma in my Fiesta to take onto the next project, which brings me to my SEi. I bought a Westfield with an engine that di

Tel's Tales Issue 025 - March 2014

Tel's Tales 025 Well this is it guys! The 2014 season has started and hopefully most cars are now ready and we are desperate to get on track and see if our expensive mods have worked and produced a better handling and quicker car. Thanks must be given to Nick Algar and the Speed Series committee members who have produced an extensive programme of events and updated target times for all but the new circuits such as Rockingham and Prescott. There is a vast amount of work involved in doing this ad

Fitting the Head

So the next job is to fit the head to the block. Start off by fitting the oil restrictor to the block. It is critical this this has the tapered hole towards the top to ensure that it will align up with the head regardless of the casing position. Next the ARP studs are screwed into position. These need to be cleaned spotless with brake cleaner, and I use an airline to ensure no foreign bodies are in the block threads. Once this is done they are coated with ARP Ultra lube and screwed hand tig

Building up the head

So building up the head. In this case starting with a nice fresh ported SBD head. After marking all the valves to ensure their position is kept identical then removing them to allow fitting the valve stem seals. These can be fitted with GREEN on the inlets and BROWN on the exhaust. These need to be pressed on straight. I use an oversize long reach socket to press them firmly against the seats. Now each of the valves, spring seats and caps can be put into place. These should all be spot

EWP Conversion - Part 2

So with the Electric Water Pump conversion I need to blank the back of the pump. Previously I have put a plate from SBD over the thermostat / take off location, but this leave a big area full of static water so instead I have aimed to create a plug to fit in the back of the water pump area. So I started with some bar billet in the lathe and made up a top hat to fit in the hole. I then machined in a groove to take an O-ring to form a seal. I wanted to retain the bung in place so fitted

Pistons and Rods

Ok so now onto the pistons and rods. In this case I am using SBD supplied steel rods and slipper piston kit. So the rods come individually wrapped and at present come with no markings on them. In future I believe they may come laser etched. The important thing is not to mark them with anything that might introduce stress into the rods. So I use a paint marker and put lines 1 4 onto one end of the rods so that not only is the rod identified, but also the cap will be maintained the right way

Waterpump Conversion to EWP - Tonights Job

So tonight to wind down after work I decided to tackle the conversion of the water pump on the duratec engine to a water inlet from the electric water pump. So to start off with I took the water pump off the engine and stripped off the O-ring. Using an angry grinder cut off the impeller and pulley mounting off the pump. once this is don't the pump body can be put into the lathe and the front face lathed down to within an inch of its life. Once this is complete the shaft and bearing can be stri

Bottom End

Ok so onto the build up of the bottom end mounted on the engine stand. In this case I am using ARP main studs from SBD which are reusable compared to the OEM bolts. Because I will be using a dry sump pan that fits tight under the Main Bearing ladder I need to shorten the studs to prevent fouling as can be seen in the pic below. I do this by putting each on one the lathe and taking off around 4-5mm. Once this is done the studs are completed with the bench grinder followed by a thread file to

Introduction

So anyway I was building up a duratec engine and thought I would snap a few pics along the way to create a bit of a reference for anyone else building up a Duratec engine. So I plan to use this blog to run through the build up process in as much detail as possible. In this engines case its an all steel engine with a lot of SBD bits, but the main principals will remain the same. Feel free to comment, discuss and disagree with some of my techniques. Ive been assembling engines since I was little,

CO2 Emissions

I have a year 2000 SEiW westfield with a 1996cc pinto SHOC engine. Does anyone know the official CO2 emissions (g/km) for this model, and if so do you have (or can you direct me to) official documentary evidence of this from Westfield Cars please. Thanks, Gerald

Moving on

Moving on literally , hopefully will have the up to this point pictures soon .. Interior and panels are well stripped , wooden dash has gone , wilton carpets and soundproofing has been removed. Crossflow has gone , sigma is trial fitted , Isobel is driving and Jack better watch out !! Q357GDH is now being moved to the unit where I had hoped for some swift progress .

Starting from here

Q357GDH Came to me about a year ago although in what appeared unmolested condition it soon became clear that it had had several body colour changes . Suspension and chassis was identified as being prelit type right on the end of the last of the prelit's . Bodywork is Narrow type which has been slightly tweeked width wise and bonnet is Narrow but also has been shortened as a prelit chassis is 2" shorter and 1" narrower so Russ tells me . I'll post up some more photo's as work progresses altho

Baffled fitted in ERA sump

After fitting my Westfield with an ST170 zetec engine a year ago I've done 2500 miles on road and track and thought it was time I upgraded my ERA sump with baffles made of alloy and welded in So here are some photos of my efforts I'm having problems with loading photobucket link so I will try again in a few days I'm having a complete nightmare loading photos to this post but the links have gone as comments below to give you some idea as to windage tray fitting, and how I made cardboard templ
