The Long Way North 2: WSCC Club Road trip 22nd/23rd June 2024

Dear Members,

 

The Club invites you to join the 2024 TLWN2 tour which is a 2-day weekend event covering 330 miles of the best driving roads in the UK 😎

 

 

The Club successfully ran The Long Way North Tour back in 2008 so we thought it was about time for a re run! Based on the route of the Pennine Way, our tour takes in some spectacular scenery and some of the UK's best driving roads as we make our way north from Edale, Derbyshire to Berwick-Upon-Tweed in the Scottish borders.

 

The route will cover:

• 150 miles on Saturday 22nd June (meet at 9am set off 9:30am approx) from Rushup Edge car park at the top of Winnats Pass near Castleton to Scotch Corner.
• and 180 miles on Sunday 23rd June, travelling from Scotch Corner (set off from Hotel at approx 9am) to Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

 

The Club will provide a comprehensive roadbook for this event as well as promotional clothing and stickers. The roadbook is a very detailed explanation of the route. It uses a combination of tulip diagrams, road signs and descriptions of the road ahead and also includes fuel stop locations. The roadbook is guidance only and further instructions on navigation will be included within the roadbook to be issued closer to the event. Ideally you need a driver and passenger to help navigate the route along the way. Here is an example of what you will receive:

Saturday evening (22nd June 2024) will be a social stay over at Holiday Inn Darlington A1 Scotch Corner. Guests are free to use the Active Life Leisure Centre, with its swimming pool, fitness centre and hot tub. A range of beauty therapies are also available. The Club has secured 20 discounted rooms (see current allocation below) to suit our preferred booking options as per details and costs below, please note bedrooms are non refundable after 30 days prior to arrival. The room rates include breakfast and should the guests require dinner, this will be a £30 supplement to the bed & breakfast rate as below:

 

·         £120 per Double bedroom, based on 2 guests sharing

·         £140 per Twin bedroom, based on 2 guests sharing

·         £110 per Single bedroom, for Sole Occupancy

·         £30 dinner supplement, per person to include 3 courses.

 

If you are interested and want to participate in this event you must book your own accommodation direct with the hotel - please phone the hotel Reservations Manager Charlotte Gregory Tel: 01748 828612 (working hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8.30-16.30) and state you are with the Westfield Sports Car Club Group booking on Saturday 22nd June 2024 to ensure you get the discount rate. Charlotte has advised your card details are noted but payment is not taken until 30 days prior (unless to wish to pay on booking). Once you have booked your accommodation please let  @Marcus Barlow - Show and Events Co-ordinator know so the club can keep a tally on numbers attending. Hotel bookings are on a first come first served basis although we do have options to increase the number of allocated rooms if required.

 

The start point is Rushup Edge car park at the top of Winnats Pass near Castleton. The nearest 24 hour petrol station for folks to fill up and have a toilet break before hand is Texaco Hope valley S33 0EB and there is also a Morrisons  in Chapel-en-Le-Frith SK23 0HZ.

 

Please note this is a non-competitive event!

Brilliant plan and wish you all the best. Unfortunately logistically not possible for me. It would involve two additional nights accommodation (one at the beginning and one at the end) and still leave me with a drive home of over 4 hours.

 could I ask a couple of questions please.

 

What time will you leave Edale cos it's a 2.5hr+ drive there for me from Worcestershire? 

 

I presume 2nd day is Darlington to Berwick. What happens then - is a drive back south planned or is it just everyone to their own devices? 

 

Is there any chance of the route being made available as a .gpx so solo drivers could use a satnav?

• Yes 2nd day is Darlington (Scotch Corner) to Berwick Upon Tweed, after which we are all free to do whatever we wish.

Is there any chance of the route being made available as a .gpx so solo drivers could use a satnav? 

• Yes I am looking at plotting the route to be available in .gpx .itn etc, these will be for reference if anyone gets lost or as you say for solo drivers, although the idea of the tour is to use the roadmap as a 'mystery tour' guidance.

 

To expand on the above and from the experience of the original tour everybody can meet at the start point for a tyre kick and chin wag, then you are free to set off when you want, with who you want (we don't want a massive single convoy so to speak) some people will go on their own and some people in small groups - its up to you. You may bump into others (not literally!) on the way, at petrol stations etc then hopefully all rendezvous at the Hotel stop. With this same format repeating on Sunday. Members who are travelling South on day two may wish to cut that leg short if they so wish 👍

I'm booked. Gonna stay somewhere near Edale Friday night. I'll be solo so whether I do the Sunday leg is dependent on me finding someone to fraternise with Sunday eve and drive at least part of the way back with on the Monday.
