Hi @Turbo_Jimmy, I’m not that local to as I’m based just on the outskirts of Peterborough, I currently drive 1.8 Turbo mx5 powered Westfield(267BHP at the wheel), if your ever over this direction give us a shout and I could meet you somewhere and take you for a drive, or keep you eye out when the lockdown has ended on here and I do try to meet up at the Peak District for a days fun of driving, you could always meet there in your tin top and jump in with me for the day.👍 like you I asked the same question 2 years ago not knowing what is best to go for and like everyone is saying keep your opinions open. P.S welcome simon 1 Quote

You'll get used to the standard Mazda power very quickly. They're in a bit of a weird spot where you've either got 140bhp or less, or you slap a turbo onto it and suddenly have 220bhp or more and a long way beyond. There's a happy spot of say 180-220bhp that you'll struggle to find a Mazda in but there will be hundreds of satisfied Ford/Vauxhall engine'd owners. Give one of them a go before committing to a Mazda. I took the Mazda engine to 165bhp before accidentally fitting a turbo and I do wish I'd have pushed the n/a tuning into the 180bhp area. Quote
Turbo_Jimmy Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 @si_salisbury 267 that sounds fun! Thanks for the offer, a day out in the Peak District in a Westie sounds awesome. I do travel around the country for work so this could also be an option once the restrictions are lifted. 1 Quote
Turbo_Jimmy Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 @Dommo Following some of the advice on here I will keep my options open. However, after driving a standard MX5 and a Turbo’d version which is night and day different. I would expect this to be the same in a Westfield. I was looking to get standard Mazda power then, look at going down the turbo route to put my own stamp on it, if you get what I mean. Quote
Dommo Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Totally get it, just trying to flag that there's a popular area that a lot of Westfield owners are happy with that you will never cross with a Mazda engine so worth exploring before making the final decision Quote

Geezergs Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Jimmy welcome, I have done exactly what you plan and have had an interesting journey, Mazda backup is good cheap and plentyfull. My forged 1.8 Turbo gives 303bhp & 300ftlbs reliably and just gets better. Good luck theirs plenty of advice and support in our WSCC world. Quote

Martyn Vann - Warwickshire AO Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Hi and welcome! Post lockdown you are welcome to come to our meetings, no Mazda engined cars attend regularly though. We do go to the monthly breakfast meets at Curborough Sprint Course where we sometimes get a wide variety of Westfields. 1 Quote
Turbo_Jimmy Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 @Martyn Vann - Joint Warwickshire AO Hi Martyn, thanks for the welcome. I will try to get to as many meets as possible before I pull the trigger so will attempt to get to yours. I’m not to far from Curborough, so that’s another option. Quote
Rob Hunter - Club Secretary Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 I think Toybox may still have lovely orange and black car with a forged, race prepped MX5 engine for about 15k. It's got a full cage and looks a very nice build. Andrew also had a Greddy turbo kit to go with it for a bit extra cash. I seriously looked at it until I realized I struggled inserting/extricating my lanky (not to mention old and fat!) body through the roll cage with any semblance of dignity 😂 Be careful if you do go to Toybox.... I ended up blowing my budget after being seduced by a gorgeous Mega S2000! Quote
