KugaWestie
The doorbell went at about 10.30am. I had been like a cat on hot bricks up till then. TNT delivery, a nice lightened flywheel When I sent it away, it weighed in at 8.75kg. now it has been on a diet it weighs just over 7kg So I fitted it Followed by the clutch and pressure plate There was nothing for it but to wheel the engine round from the back garden to the front of the garage. Here it is ready to go into its new home
KugaWestie
And on it's way in. After a bit off wiggling, and turning the crankshaft slightly, it slid in lovely. After lots of plugging on cables, fitting the cooling pipes and bolting everything up, I fitted the white camcover. I am pleased that there is some more room round the engine after I tidied the bay up a bit the other day. Then I filled it with coolant and oil. The fitting time was three hours, not bad for an amatuer And it started first time I just have one problem with the engine, I cannot get the tickover down below 1500rpm Not sure why this is, I have twiddled the air idle screw, which got it down from 2000rpm. I think my next step will be to spray a load of carb cleaner into the idle control valve that sits below the throttle body. Maybe it is gunked up where the engine has stood for a long time. All in all, I am very pleased with how it has all gone
KugaWestie
I am still waiting for my blue oil filler cap to arrive. When it does, I will buy some paint to match the colour and pick out the lettering on the camcover
Doug Dastardly
Looks smashing Gary Did you not say that you were going to pick out the cam cover lettering in pink to match the timing belt though......

Is your engine a mk 2 or 2.5 1800? If so you have to bridge out the ECU and start and set the idle when running then turn off and then unbridge. On the cars is a diagnostic plug (nearside rear of the engine by the wing on the original car) - Bridge contacts TEN (Test ENgine) and GND (GrouND) in the connector with a paperclip. The terminals are labelled inside the lid. I am pretty sure it is the small black box in your photo below that is sitting below the relay with the two yellow and one red terminal. Mine is 1.8 Mark One, with the diagnostics plug you saw in the photo. I can bridge TEN and GND easily, what happens next? Car running or just ignition on? Then what mate? Engine and ignition off Bridge contacts Start engine Adjust idle When satisfied stop engine - ignition off Remove bridge Re-start as normal and Bob`s yer Auntie Good luck matey peeps. If it doesnt work check for air leaks in the induction system with WD40 - when a leak is found the idle speed will increase but be careful though - it is flammable (obviously). Mark (smokey mow)
As well as all the good advice above check the throttle is closing fully and the throttle position sensor is set up correctly.
hilux
As well as all the good advice above check the throttle is closing fully and the throttle position sensor is set up correctly. Yes, very good advice too................also a fact on these cars is that a dirty boddle throtty will give a false idle - pull off the air hose and if it is gummed up use brake or carb cleaner. .......................another thought as well , check your throttle cable isnt snagged or tight. Once done let us know for if it then really struggles to idle there is a clutch switch in the loom you may not be aware of that might be still there that can affect that aspect. KugaWestie
Throttle is closing fine and the accelerator cable is under no tension when idling. Carb cleaner in the idle control valve will be my next step, as I think it may be gunked as it has stood for a long time. I will also run a diagonostics to see if there are any error codes
