Black Busa Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Jeff, Go the more power route Im now paranoid about mine, everyone i know have blown there engines But you did it the right way with a bang Quote
Buzz Billsberry Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Harsh Jeff Was that an XTR4 or a radical holding you up towards the end? Nope t'was a car engined AGM buzz Quote
JeffC Posted May 6, 2008 Author Posted May 6, 2008 well the decision has been made , the remainder of the engine is going away To extreme engines 2mrw to get rebuilt into another 1548cc karl seems to think that the piston pin has caused the problem (hes never heard of it ) but as the rod is twisted he thinks the pin has failed causing the piston to jam and the rod trying to pull it down twisting itself then ripping the lower part of the piston off then exiting the block I inquired about the chance "goodwill " from wiseco (piston) but as the pin is no where to be seen he didnt sound too hopeful As my first race is Sat 17th all being well he hopes to get the bored cylinder/rod/piston sent out and motor built and back to me for next tuesday, giving me a few days to get a exhaust manifold made fit engine and run in , sort brakes, then get checked for scrutineering why Is nothing I ever do is straight forward Quote
Blatman Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 QUOTE but as the rod is twisted he thinks the pin has failed causing the piston to jam and the rod trying to pull it down twisting itself then ripping the lower part of the piston off then exiting the block That rod looks like it failed under compression, not tension. I think the piston seized, causing the gudgeon pin to fail, which was then smashed to bits as the engine slowed down with the rod punching holes in the block as it flailed around. Look for (small) signs of blueing on the piston, rings or bore Quote
Black Busa Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Jeff, Good man, you knew it was the correct thing todo Quote

cast iron Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 karl seems to think that the piston pin has caused the problem (hes never heard of it ) I remeber the early days of Frostys website, which said something like buy our conrods or yours will snap! The little end disintegrating is quite a known problem in race engines Quote
originalgeezer Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Good luck with it Jeff and sorry to hear about the old engine. But Watching the video has just made me want another Busa.........no no no no Must not be tempted Quote

Black Busa Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Jeff, Do you get tickets you can share out for your debut? Noticed croft ££ signs for eye balls Quote
JeffC Posted May 9, 2008 Author Posted May 9, 2008 Further developments in the engine saga Just had my engine builder on the phone and bad news It turns out the remaining three pistons each have hairline cracks around the gudgeon pins , so it appears that the engine s******g itself is down to piston failure (only done around 16 hours) Im not happy as you can imagine especially as time isnt on my side to start arguing about the ifs and whys and I now have to shell out on a full set of pistons to get me back up and running can anyone offer an opinion on what would make a piston crack in this manner they must be faint cracks as I never noticed them and am I being optomistic in thinking there should be a gesture of "goodwill " from the piston manufacturer as this is going to be costing me a lot of money through no fault of my own or the man that built the engine in the first place Quote
slippy Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Worth asking the question Coop softly softly at first then if no joy threaten to name and shame them across the land Quote
