KenE Posted January 6, 2005 Posted January 6, 2005 If price is such a major selling point how come Westfield don't show prices on their website? eh? eh? Maybe it's because there's now some brand recognition and loyalty their prices are creeping up? Out of interest, does anybody know the price of a complete Sport 2000 kit for example? Ken Quote
Nick M Posted January 6, 2005 Posted January 6, 2005 I think the answer is no the caterham is not worth the extra unless you purticularly want the badge! I disagree, because that's only looking at part of the equation. Cost of the components going into the car ? Then a Caterham looks expensive ? But if you then consider the residuals because of the brand image ? Starts to make them better value for money.... Look at it this way - spend 25K on a used Caterham and you could sell it after a year for a substantial portion of that. Spend 25K on a *new* Westfield and it will be worth 50p and a conker in 12 months time. So is the Caterham now worth the extra ? Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted January 7, 2005 Author Posted January 7, 2005 Where do I get a one year old Westfield for 50p and a conker then? Quote
Blatman Posted January 7, 2005 Posted January 7, 2005 Sensible people just prefer Westfields, and Don't wear Rolex watches lol *cough* Out of interest, does anybody know the price of a complete Sport 2000 kit for example? According to the blurb I've seen, a CKD Sports 2000 is £25,989.36 + VAT A factory turnkey car is £28,542.55 + VAT. It has several things which bump the price up, and several things which are expensive but essential. They are claiming 495bhp per tonne, so it's all but an R500, but for several thousand pounds less. The full spec has been posted up somewhere else on here. If it were my money, I'd be speccing the parts I buy from Westfield carefully, and buying some parts from 3rd party suppliers. I don't think you'd get it down to below 20K for *all new* parts especially if you keep the sequential 'box. Delete the sequential in favour of something else though, and along with some other obvious savings it would become a sub 20K car quite easily. Actually, I think the complete CKD price isn't bad at all for what you get... Quote

Show me the way to the Westfields that are 50p and a conker il buy a hundred!!! I admit that you do get a healthyish return on your money when you sell a caterham but at the same time you have to shell out an awfull lot more in the first place so it really goes round in circles. Blatman is correct and I think we have talked about this before If I were to bulid a new Westfield I would not purchase all the components from them I feel the quality of some of the parts are supplied at a price not a quality and for a new build I do not want to pay out good money for componets only to have to replace them in a year or two. You can also cut down on your build costs if you do use other supliers yove just got to be a bit canny about it. All this said I have purchased items from caterham before and I have to say I think the quality of there Carbon Fiber is shocking for the money. But again because its a Caterham people will pay the money same as a Rolex and an Omega Bear is right it all comes down to clever marketing and not alot elese, If you want a Quality watch for not alot try a Tissot its an Omega at a lower price withought the badge but there just as good!! Monkeylegend Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 Dictionary.com is your friend. Andy Thanks Andy. Nothing to be offended about then. Maybe I was being a bit shellfish for hogging their site.Thats obviously what he meant. Quote
James Posted January 8, 2005 Posted January 8, 2005 Here's one for you If Caterham owners feel that no matter what they own the better quailty car, why is it when someone starts bating them about it,l instead of sitting back and smilling smugley to them selves safe in the knowledge that they have made the better choice do they take the bate and start harping on about Heratige and tracing linage etc? Maybe there not as emotionally secure as they would like us to belive? Not only that but I do think its funny that they all go on about "direct decendant of Lotus" & "Chapmans ethos of cutting out wheight" when Chapman hated the bl**** thing How many times did he try axing it? I think he would turn in his grave if he knew thatthe one car he has really been rememberd for is the one he couldnt stand irony love it! Quote

Considering how long that thread has existed on Blatchat I suspect that many hundreds of Caterham owners have read it and sat back "smugly" while a handful feel they have something to say. However, do you think it's right that somebody who I think owns neither a Westfield nor a Caterham, but a Locost (Bobw), should post something that causes such a debate between our two groups? Maybe the two groups of owners of the better sevenesque car should become provocative on the locostbuilders website! For example - have you seen how many posts there are on there about "building" related subjects??- about 6000. There are 115 concerning "Driving" Best Regards Ken Quote
