felters Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 The thing everyone seems to be missing is that the *1.6* Vauxhall engine is better than everything that's been mentioned so far, Why you no risten? Toyoda bes' 1600 by mile! 1600 Foxall no tune. Yoo rook at Bratchat. All Crassic owner no upgrade. Dey get bedder engine go fasser... Toyoda. Bloory iriot. Quote
Nick M Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 *shakes head* The first three letters of your engine manufacturer's name say an awful lot I feel... If you want a *proper* engine, it has to be a Vauxhall Being *slightly* more sensible for a moment, what sort of power outputs are people seeing from Toyota engines without resorting to forced induction ? Quote
felters Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Nick - I don't understand the details but I gather from a variety of disappointed Caterham Classic owners posts on Blatchat that getting much more than 120bhp from the 1600 VX is difficult and is clearly a completely different proposition from the 1800 and 2000cc units. Why do I like my Toyota? It weighs just over 80kg, takes a dogs abuse and seems to work well in my old narrow car. I love the Lotus 7 for it's original concept of light weight and relatively low powered style of driving. For me trying (and usually failing! to be ballsy enough to carry speed into a corner because I haven't got the power or budget to keep up with some of the VX/Zetecs coming out the other end, is my buzz. Top power out of a 1600 16valve is probably about 170 without tampering with the bottom end. Mine has a lot less than that Quote
Martin Keene Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Different 1600... the caterham classic is the old 8 valve unit. I believe Nick's is the 16 valve ecotec lump. Try this for a *very* serious 1600 vx... Quote
mb893 Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Seems you have to turbo charge them or install them in pairs to go quickly... This is called "innovation" and/or "style" and a quest by right thinking people to take the perfect world that is BECdom to the next logical level, but is lost to those of you still living in the 1970's. Or is it that we know we're better than the CECs anyway and just want to really rub your noses in it. Yes, this seems more likely John Quote
Bazzer Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Why do I like my Toyota? It weighs just over 80kg, takes a dogs abuse and seems to work well in my old narrow car. Is that with a gearbox Bazzer Quote
Blatman Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 I believe Nick's is the 16 valve ecotec lump Yup, Nicks is indeed the 16 valve Ecotec 1.6. The SBD Westfield is also powered by a 1.6 (well, 1.7 actually....) 16 valver like Nicks, and that has 242 normally aspirated bhp. Plenty of potential there...... Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 The SBD 1600cc Westfield - Brighton Speed Trials 2002 256 BHP - 161 lb/ft Torque - ¼ Mile - 10.87 seconds @ 129 MPH How many BEC out there would like to go to Brighton Speed Trials next year and see if they could better the SBD car. I dont think that even with two engines you do better than that. Quote
CharliePsycho Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Has anybody actually seen more than 275bhp out of a duratec yet? (let alone 290 ) The 1.6 VX does very well indeed, especially in it racing class, but it is still 50bhp shy of the 2lt - and I don't think the weight difference makes up for that (or does it?) All of these power outputs you can only dream of on a Zetec though - and it still weighs as much!!! ...© Quote
mb893 Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 How many BEC out there would like to go to Brighton Speed Trials next year and see if they could better the SBD car. For the cost of that, I could take two BEC's and beat it twice! John Quote
Blatman Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Did any BEC's in any class set a faster time than that at Brighton? Have any BEC's set a hill or sprint record that's faster than the 2.0l class record? Not as far as I know........ Quote
Bazzer Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Did any BEC's in any class set a faster time than that at Brighton? Have any BEC's set a hill or sprint record that's faster than the 2.0l class record? Not as far as I know........ But my engine is only a 1.3L. They get lumped in with the 2.0L because they are so good It would only be fair if you sleaved down your Astra engine to 1.3L to make a comparison Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 It would only be fair if you sleaved down your Astra engine to 1.3L to make a comparison You could add ballast lets say 80kg Quote
Bazzer Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 It would only be fair if you sleaved down your Astra engine to 1.3L to make a comparison You could add ballast lets say 80kg What you mean fit an Astra engine in the boot box You will choose a pig iron lump rather than one made out of exotic alloy's Quote
Blatman Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 It would only be fair if you sleaved down your Astra engine to 1.3L to make a comparison Ah, the sound of back peddaling.......you BEC boys want it all ways. You claim that BEC's are the way forward/better than CEC's/plenty of torque/quicker/faster/whatever than a 2.0l pig iron CEC, but when we get down to the nittiy gritty of timed performance figures, you go all coy...... The truth is out there......and it's measured in minutes, seconds, and tenths of seconds at every race/sprint/hillclimb track in the country......... As I've sad before, when a BEC beats a CEC by setting a quicker time in a level competiton, I'll be convinced. Until then, don't buy a BEC and expect to be winning trophies, or traffic light grand prix's against a proper car... Disclaimer. This is banter.......with a hint of truth...... Quote
