  1. Couldn't agree more Stu. It is ridiculous that I'm being encouraged by the MSA ( who are supposed to look out for our safety ) to replace my cage with a roll bar ( cheapest option to comply ) It is equally ridiculous that I should have to throw away a perfectly adequate 38mm tubed roll cage and replace it with yet another 38mm tubed roll cage. ( have the cage manufacturers pulled some strings ? ) Surely if the holomogated cage offers a satisfactory level of protection ( better than just a roll bar ) then mine must do the same, well I can confirm that, having rolled after hitting a tyre wall at approx 60mph, not sure how I'd have faired with just a roll bar ? As much as it annoys me I'm going to make the changes necessary so I can continue to compete next season, but I won't be buying a new holomogated cage or a non holomogated 45mm roll bar, I'll be fabricating my own roll bar to MSA specification and bolting my current front cage back on. Don't even start me on TYRES !!!!! Rant over

  2. Just a quick query, I wonder what the position is regarding cars with full cages (not to current requirements) which have MSA log books, such as the flymo, and my old Striker? Both had cages which passed scrutineering for Racing, and held log books for sprints and hillclimbs, but neither would meet the current regs, neither did they have a cage certificate. When I log booked the striker I was asked who fitted the welded on cage, to which the reply was "manufacturer supplied as part of the kit". This did not present any obstacle to the log book (despite no cage certificate) To my mind, there are a lot of cars in this situation, Martos and others, with cages which met regulations at the time of fitting, were acceptable (for racing where accidents are more likely), but did not get certified as they met the minimum requirements at the time. If the MSA get away with this, will they soon insist on zero emissions for all competing cars regardless of age? Seat belts in historic vehicle, cages to current regulations (50mm hoops) in classic race cars etc. If this is the attitude then WSCC wants to review its relationship with the MSA, to ensure that its members are not in breach of any MSA affiliation rule which prevents them competing in none MSA sanctioned motorsport events. Rant over....

  3. Agree T.E, I'd estimate my car got 15 - 20 hrs input between events this year. Most of our issues have been either development or simply pushing boundaries. Sierra diffs, driveshafts and CV joints for example were never designed for the power we're putting through them. Broken plenum pipe or cracked plenum...which shelf can I buy that off...that's right, you can't! Power + Boundaries + Pioneering will inevitably lead to mechanical failures. The clever bit is overcoming these week spots through development, use and Excellent Sponsors My car in VX trim was exceptionally reliable, one head gasket in 5 years, sadly 260hp was not competitive enough hence the need for brave development, headbangingly frustrating development at times but my the rewards are satisfying when it all works!!

  4. So a month in to Westfield ownership I am close to having covered 500 miles and have just fitted some used Team Dynamics with R888's. Last weekend saw new Protech shocks all-round and the starter motor replaced. This weekend I'll be taking a look at the alternator and fitting short competition steering arms. So far attempts to stop the XE from leaking have only half worked so I think the rear crank seal is going to have to be done too.

  5. Try to watch the bit with JB talking about his dad racing RallyX and then trying it himself. 1, I double dare you not to be moved when he realises the 600hp Bug raced against his dad 2, so funny to hear a F1 driver squeaking like a girl with fun... Hope he takes it up when he jacks in F1..! For all its faults Aunty Beeb does sometimes get it very right.

  9. Yes Paul The trouble is that there are probably alot of competitors ( myself included) who just wanted to do a few events a year and now that option is unavailable. ironically for me is that the min requirement roll hoop is probably less safe than my full cage

  12. I'm currently at £13,400 for mine. Engine and management is stock. Have a full cage and carbon dash with a Race Tech Dash2Pro digital dash. Mine is used on the roads but the track is now taking priority.

  16. Update: here's what the kit of bits would look like: and here's how it ends up looking: Once I have the chip programmed and dip switches set, I'll probably just cover the whole thing in heatshrink like an RC model speed controller - that should be best for weight and heat Dean, this will be yours when I've finished it...
