New Trader - WSCC GoPro Discount

Good stuff - you're welcome :t-up:

Best setting... Slightly subjective, but personally I like 720p / 60fps. I believe this defaults to 'wide', which again I like as it gives a bit more reference as to what's going on, and you can see the driver inputs easily.

I don't find the extra resolution of 1080 that useful for web videos, plus the file sizes (and thus editing / processing time and how quickly the memory card gets filled up) are increased significantly. If you were making DVDs then yes, you'd use the highest res possible!

The video below was shot at 720/60fps and the quality is pretty impressive I would say (click the 'cog' symbol and select 720):

Using this setting also means if you want to slomo something at, say, 50% there is still enough frame rate there (30fps) to look smooth. If you slomo a 30fps file it gets all choppy (15fps).

Hope that helps?

Adam

Thanks - I will have a play when the snow has all gone!

Was your camera mounted in the fully waterproof case in that video?

Snow driving would make a good video - just saying ;)

In that video it's the full housing, I always use it due to potential (probable?) camera-soaking with the open housing.

I mentioned earlier in the thread that I use a separate external mic (little grey rectangle you can see under the left hand side of the dash) for the sound. I'm a bit 'anal' about video production so I don't mind going to the trouble of syncing it all up afterwards.

Generally I would go with the full housing in a Westy, especially on track, as the sound gets very 'windy' over about 80-90mph. The sound is meant to be vastly improved on the HD3 over the HD2 - I've not had chance to test it in car yet (and my track day this weekend has been cancelled :( ), but I took it out MTBing and I was actually really surprised by the sound quality improvement the HD3 gave over my HD2.

I'll try and get a small in-car clip asap, although we are due 6" of snow here today...

Cheers,

Adam

The GoPro turned up yesterday, great service from Adam and the guys at Tarty Bikes.  Just waiting on the micro SD card to come through.  I ordered a SanDisc 32gb class10 from MyMemory for £18 delivered, which I thought was quite good.

Once I have the card I can have a play ... oh yes, and I need to get the car back on the road, it might help!!

Great stuff - glad it arrived safely. Yes, that's a good price for the card, should do nicely!

Any questions, just shout

Hello,

Yep, can get those no problem. If you'd like one just let me know and I can pop a custom item on the site for you :)

I was thinking of one of the blacks but getting nervous about battery life being only 20-30 mins and the firmware containing lots of bugs.

re the reports being alarmist?

@Adam, if we had a GroupBuy, can we expect a bigger discount?! :p

The battery life info I've seen being banded around on the net seems strange. I have a feeling the current temperatures have something to do with it as well - under about 0 celcius all these small 'action cameras' can become a little temperamental, with reduced battery life and sometimes crashing mid-file (but you can resurrect these 'broken' files).

I can't say for sure from 1st hand experience what the HD3 battery life is like (although I hope to be able to after this weekend), but there is a relatively scientific and controlled comparison here:

It appears there is approx 25% reduced battery life with the ~25% smaller and lighter camera - seems fairly reasonable I think. One point to note is that with the built-in WiFi, this allows you to add the battery bacpac easily (instead of having the expansion slot already used up with a WiFi one, if you see what I mean).

Tips to improve battery life include reducing the volume of the beep and the amount of lights flashing while recording - 4 isn't necessary in a car as it lights top and bottom of the camera too, we only need to see the front. However, if you have the app or remote, you don't need really any lights since it's all there right in front of you.

One thing I should also mention is that if you turn the WiFi on, it will stay on even when the camera is turned off - leaving that running is a sure-fire way to burn through the battery. There is a blue indicator light on the front of the camera for this. I think those reporting such short battery life will have had the WiFi on for a period of time before commencing filming - I fell foul of this first time I used the camera, but I don't expect many forum users to update their threads admitting this...

Absolutely no reason why not! If you'd like me to work out some figures just let me know  I wouldn't be prepared to orchestrate said group buy though, for obvious reasons

One further question, is there a way to externally power a go pro - e.g. from Car?

Posted

Sure - I looked into this and I believe it would be possible (and I think I saw a guide online), but not without some butchering and soldering!

They can be charged by any normal cigarette lighter to USB adaptor though (a couple of quid on eBay) - which is what I do at lunchtime on track days to keep it topped up.
