XTR2Turbo Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 On a similar note, the HD2s I have on offer at the moment are also very good value - they take the same quality video as the HD3 Silver, and if you aren't fussed about using the phone app to control it, offer a significant saving. The memory cards (SD rather than Micro SD) are a bit cheaper too. Adam Is the video quality the same? I have seen some reviews such as bike radar saying video and audio better. Quote
AdamR Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 Well, the GoPro rep told me the processor was the same. I guess you could attribute a slight increase in video quality to the new lens? Regarding the sound - I forgot to mention that (I use a separate external mic.) The HD3 is meant to have a re-designed audio system, yes. This was most people's gripe about the previous models. I haven't had chance to test it yet, but when I have I'll pop a comparison video up Quote
Rab (bombero) Reid Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Hi Adam, does the Hero3 come in the different 'packages' ie Motorsport, Surf, Outdoors like the Hero2? Really wondering if the Hero3 Black comes with a windscreen mount..? Quote
AdamR Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 The Silver and White don't have any options. This is to keep base cost down, and means you don't end up paying for additional accessories you might not use. For the Black, strictly speaking there are two different models - however this just refers to the picture on the packaging and the name! What's inside the box is exactly the same across the two 'models'. Nuts I know... There is no suction mount with the Black, but you do get the stick on mounts (this is the same for all 3 models) which do stick really, really well. Neither suction or stick on mounts are permitted on any of the track days I've been on though (but maybe are on airfield days?)? Hope that helps / makes sense!? Cheers, Adam Quote
XTR2Turbo Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 I think all the go pro fixings are compatible so if you have a mount for hero hd for example it will work with the hero 3 Quote
Rab (bombero) Reid Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 It does help, cheers mate!I do have a suction mount but I plan on selling it with my Hero2 Motorsport edition. Sounds odd possibly, but I don't want to split up the package. Would need to buy one again separately .. maybe get a cheeky wee deal from Adam Quote
GuitarmanUK Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Fantastic information Adam, thank you. I am erring towards the silver now. Quote
KugaWestie Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 The new GoPro arrived today - excellent service. Just need my memory card to arrive and then I can have a play. Adam - can I do the web update without a memory card in it? Quote

To be honest I would probably keep the suction mount - you'll get less for it in a 'package' than it would cost to buy a new one. Fantastic information Adam, thank you. I am erring towards the silver now. You're welcome - any specific questions you may have, please fire away. The new GoPro arrived today - excellent service. Just need my memory card to arrive and then I can have a play. Adam - can I do the web update without a memory card in it? Good stuff Thanks for letting me know. You need a memory card present to do the update - it downloads the latest firmware which sits on the memory card, giving the hardware the instructions it needs. Once complete, you should end up with a .bin file on the memory card (called HD3-firmware or something close to that), one called update.cmd, and two empty folders called DCIM and MISC. Your video files will go into the DCIM/100GOPRO folder, where you can delete / copy / cut files as you wish, but make sure the other files in the root directory (the first one you come to when you open the memory card) stay there. In fact, it can be worth making a copy of these and storing them on your PC somewhere. Every now and then GoPro will release an update that won't quite work properly, and take them a few days to get a new release built. If that happens (which it did to me with my HD2 a few months back), you can delete the firmware file from your memory card, then copy in the previous version you had stored on your PC and the camera will work again Edited to add: If you are going to use the GoPro App too, there will be another .bin file called WF3-app (or similar) in the root directory of the memory. The same applies about keeping a backup. 1 Quote
GuitarmanUK Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Took your advice Adam and have just ordered a Silver. Quote
AdamR Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 Great, thank you My other advice is to order one of everything else on the website. (Worth a try... ) Quote

AdamR Posted January 24, 2013 Author Posted January 24, 2013 Good stuff - you're welcome Best setting... Slightly subjective, but personally I like 720p / 60fps. I believe this defaults to 'wide', which again I like as it gives a bit more reference as to what's going on, and you can see the driver inputs easily. I don't find the extra resolution of 1080 that useful for web videos, plus the file sizes (and thus editing / processing time and how quickly the memory card gets filled up) are increased significantly. If you were making DVDs then yes, you'd use the highest res possible! The video below was shot at 720/60fps and the quality is pretty impressive I would say (click the 'cog' symbol and select 720): Using this setting also means if you want to slomo something at, say, 50% there is still enough frame rate there (30fps) to look smooth. If you slomo a 30fps file it gets all choppy (15fps). Hope that helps? Adam 2 Quote
Captain Colonial Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Nice driving. Loved the pass at 4:00, that #55 looked to be a right PITA. "Sorry, Paul"? He locked his brakes and then turned hard right across your path! I'd say you were far more sinned against that a sinner. Quote
AdamR Posted January 24, 2013 Author Posted January 24, 2013 Ah - thank you! Yeah, she's a good driver, and usually races in the other slightly more 'competitive' series so knows how to handle the car! Haha, well those were my thoughts too, but being a newbie I couldn't really take the high ground... There was a pretty big gap until he came off the brakes (thought he was going straight on with that much smoke!) so I thought I would go for it. Lesson learned though, overtaking around the outside seems a better bet there Quote
