It was because he was a scientifically unqualified (in this area) Are there any cabinet members or Secretaries of State that have advanced qualifications (or even a few years working) in the discipline for which they are responsible? If there are I bet they are in the minority, so being qualified or not is neither here or there. On 01/10/2020 at 14:03, Captain Colonial said: It’s about hypocrisy in not doing what he was telling others to do, and that was hypocrisy and humbug of the highest order. Prosecution or not has zero to do with it. I'll give you the first part but as both ARM and I have said, if he was demonstrably, provably guilty he'd have been prosecuted and despite all the "evidence" seen in the press, the Police are not sure enough to send a file to the CPS. So even though we may absolutely hate the situation we must still surely stick by innocent until proven guilty by an appropriate authority. The court of public opinion is sadly not such an authority, powerful though it can be. I'll stipulate to the position that the Police and CPS may have declined to prosecute BECAUSE of the media interest leading to an inability to get a fair trial. The cynic in me thinks that many of those in public positions recognise this and hope that a media frenzy will "get them off" in so far as they can legitimately say that they were never charged and set about rebuilding their careers so they can re-emerge later. Stuart
Used to be the norm. I've worked in many places where canteens sold booze. I worked in Sheffield steel a few decades ago and the guys on the hottest jobs actually got a beer allowance of a few pints per shift. Brought from a local pub by someone employed to do just that. DonPeffers
Can we get these 5 minute covid tests rolled out asap? 24 Sep 2020 https://metro.co.uk/2020/09/24/you-can-get-a-free-coronavirus-test-at-the-train-station-in-germany-13321661/ " "You can get a free coronavirus test at the train station in Germany". Regarding pubs closing at 10pm then crowds on the street why don't we revert to booked slots and table service only and maximum 2 hrs in pub then you must leave as new customers will be wanting the slot? Minimise number of 'merry' revellers on the street. I was surprised pubs were allowed to put up signs stating 'walk-in welcome' and reports of fictitious names and telephone numbers being provided. Why aren't pubs legally required to verify details?
tolf
Some interesting points provided in this thread. However what people are failing to grasp (general public) is that they are NOT following the rules, washing their hands or wearing masks. Basic rules it seems cannot be followed

DonPeffers
Just to clarify UK new covid case numbers..... BBC has https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-54407656 "Covid: Things 'bumpy to Christmas and beyond' - PM". "There were 12,872 new cases announced on Saturday. However, the government said a technical issue meant some cases earlier in the week were not recorded at the time so had been included in Saturday's data. The prime minister said: "The best thing we can do now for all those who have suffered in the course of this pandemic is bring it to an end in the speediest possible way." Although 12872 new cases for Saturday cases sounds very alarming it requires redistribution over the days when the tests were done and Worldometer has done this:- https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/ October 3 (GMT) 7,070 new cases and 49 new deaths in the United Kingdom. NOTE: the 12,871 cases reported today included a backlog, which Worldometer has redistributed historically based on the testing date information provided for the 10,806 cases reported by England today and the official note provided by the UK Government: "Due to a technical issue, which has now been resolved, there has been a delay in publishing a number of COVID-19 cases to the dashboard in England. This means the total reported over the coming days will include some additional cases from the period between 24 September and 1 October, increasing the number of cases reported." [source] October 2 6,968 new cases and 66 new deaths in the United Kingdom [source] October 1 6,914 new cases and 59 new deaths in the United Kingdom [source] September 30 7,108 new cases and 71 new deaths in the United Kingdom [source] September 29 7,701 new cases and 71 new deaths in the United Kingdom [source] September 28 4,662 new cases and 13 new deaths in the United Kingdom [source] September 27 6,956 new cases and 17 new deaths. DonPeffers
My post from 14.45 hrs yesterday needs updating after Gov. advised additional covid cases missed in IT glitch. Just to reclarify UK new covid case numbers..... https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/ October 4 7,982 new cases and 33 new deaths in the United Kingdom. Note from the UK Government: "An issue was identified overnight on Friday 2 October in the automated process that transfers positive cases data to PHE. It has now been resolved. The cases by publish date for 3 and 4 October include 15,841 additional cases with specimen dates between 25 September and 2 October — they are therefore artificially high for England and the UK." Worldometer has distributed over the historical time series the backlogged cases, based on the information provided [source] October 3 7,070 new cases and 49 new deaths in the United Kingdom. Boris Johnson said health officials were trying to reach the close contacts of those who had tested positive amid concerns that they may have been unknowingly spreading the disease for days". Expected average 3 contacts per identified case. I recently reordered my (covid medicine!?) Overproof rum and with what now seems astounding foresight I ordered 2 bottles for a long Winter and covid not disappearing anytime soon. Goods arrived today.
