Banning combustion engines in the UK, is it worth it..?

I like the way the terminology has now subtly changed from climate change to air quality

Cars only account for 11% of CO2. Particle emissions may be more in built up areas.

I do wish there was some joined up thinking though not just attacking easy targets.

Perhaps we can ban shops, offices and houses being heated to silly temperatures all winter and tell people to wear a jumper.

Last year at Le Mans a guy on our campsite had a Tesla Which he had plugged into a generator for most of the weekend charging it up I did wonder how many gallons per charge he was getting

It would be a great step forward if there were cables laid in the road (as most are anyway) and cars had the built in technology to charge passively as they drove around.

Once the uptake of electrical vehicles does take off charging points organised around petrol stations are a non starter

At the last bank holiday there was charge rage incidents at motorway service areas so there needs to be huge changes. On top of that a lot of cars will need selling through and we shall have road pricing to replace lost tax.

it hasn't been thought through at all and once people see they are being priced off the road, there will be back peddling like mad.

As electric is the future as our government says, then they will be reversing the plan not to electrify the west coast rail line to use hybrid diesels.

In 2002 as part of the Energy Perfomance of Buildings Directive the then govement announced that they wanted to reduce the carbon emissions from buildings and that by 2016 all newly constructed buildings would be carbon neutral.  After years of deliberation they failed to even establish a defination for "Carbon Neutral" and by 2010 it was pretty much a lost cause as the divide was too great between where we were at the time and what they originally wanted to achieve.  

Unsuprisingly this idea is now pretty much dead and unless the electric technology in vehicles improves sufficiently over the next 20years to both make make these cars affordable to all but also deliver a battery range that would allow us to drive from london to central europe in a day then I would fully expect a similar about turn by a future govement. 

I hope I'm wrong as i genuinely would like to see electric cars become a viable alternative to the combustion engine, but i also belive that manufactuers should be allowed to develop these at there own pace and without external interferance.

Forgive me for being cynical of our government's intentions but it's probably the same experts advising the government to push for lecy that advised the push for diesel. And we all know how well that is working out.

And for all his being labeled a hairy buffoon by the hippies, Clarkson was banging on about diesel particulates a good 10 years back.

And whatever the next fad is, we will be offered amazing incentives to move to it for a few years and then once the majority of folk are committed to it, the government will tax the  out of it...

The government treats these motoring incentives like a gateway drug to the nasty expensive stuff.

By the time I get round to driving myself into the big garage in the ground, I fully expect leaded 4* to be rediscovered as the savior of the planet

If you read the small print petrol electric hybrids are excluded so it will happen. I just hope there is something better than a Prius and you can get a hybrid with manual gearbox
