    Adge's Sport 250 Build & Tinkering Thereafter!

Hello all, afraid the time has come for me to start my threatened build thread!! After a crack of dawn start (for me anyway) arrived at Kingswinford. Spent a very enjoyable and informative three hours or so with Ian and the rest of the crew. Van expertly loaded by Ian, didn't move an inch on the return journey. Had a good look at the cars in build and took loads of photos, including a lot of the factory 250 which Ian was kind enough to raise on the ramp so that I could have a good poke about and photo all things hidden when it's on th ground. Obligatory shot of bits in the van. Quick offload of all the bits and boxes, and my garage/workshop is pretty full, (I admire any body who builds in a single garage), then take the van back. Next step, to sort through all the boxes and bits, unwrap the bodywork and store things in a semi logical order. Not had chance to do any sorting today, "the boss" had new flooring laid in the kitchen, therefore my day was spent disconnecting/reconnecing white goods. Shortening plinths, refitting doors (why is it never straightforward, or is it just me!) and all the other unforeseen things that these "quick" jobs seem to involve! I'm told the days my own tomorrow! after we take the dogs for run a on the soggy Somerset levels (weather permitting). So the the sorting can commence, then the real "fun" can begin. I'm aiming to make regular progress updates, and I'm sure I'll be seeking guidance from you "experts" along the way. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Adge

Mega S2000 Build - By Andy

Well for years I have been after a hobby and to build we Westfield. I first thought of building a SEight. I got the engine, I build a dedicated 52sqm garage. My wife then wanted to move, that was eight years ago. I then got my new house extension sorted and finally I managed to build my new garage, dedicated to an unhealthy obsession with Volvo R cars and a new project. The mega S2000. This is my stage four S60R at nordschleife. I almost purchased a kit whilst at Stoneleigh, where I go every year. In talking to some folk who have built, they advised to go straight to the starter kit and go from there. I did just this, but I found a kit from @Rednop1 and made my way to secure the purchase. Top chap, really friendly, yet to assess his tea making skills. The kit I have is as follows: Westfield Mega s2000 starter kit Full set of fw bodywork with v8 bonnet in the new Ash grey colour Bespoke Westifeld Mega s2000 chassis 3rd gen front widetrack Nylon suspension upgrade front & rear Chassis panels have been powder coated black Chassis was powder coated at the factory Lowered floors Cage mounts pre welded to the chassis Mega s2000 lower steering column Included in the sale below are extra parts which I have purchased Ford sierra 3.62 7" lsd (used) Westfield front uprights Westfield alu front hubs Westfield Propshaft Westfield Fw Fuel tank kit Westfield Msa bar Westfield Protech front and rear shocks and springs Pro race rims gloss black 2x rear 8" 15" 2x front 7" 15" Westfield chassis loom Westfield sport turbo seats black with orange piping and diamond stitching Westfield front Race brake Package(black) <- Now swapped for AP Racing Brake Kit - Hoping these are an upgrade on my previous set. Westfield rear hs brake calipers(black) Westfield full exhaust system with Carbon silencer Since then I have also bought: 56,000 mile S2000 Engine, Box and Loom Radtec Extreme Radiator New OEM Clutch Carbon Light Surrounds Indicator Pods - Although I am reading that I should consider indicators that are under the lights New Spark Plugs Reduced Serpentine Belt Renewed Rocker Cover and Coil Cover (Orange and Black). Spoon Sports Gear Stick Selector Sump Baffle Decat Pipe Land Rover Indicators (IVA Compliant) Steeringrack 2.2 turns Some Carbon Fibre upgrades Litterally no building done to date, just parts aquisition. I'm reading with eagerness your build @Si.Dalziel and keen to get any advice or even a little help. Here we are with the orginal chassis: here we are with the bodywork on the car: These are the parts supplied withe the car when I picked it up from Ash: Shiny Radiator Nice Sport Turbo Seats I guess you could say I cheated a bit as the car was rolling chassis stage. The car had all the suspension fitted and the rear differential along with the fuel tank and westfield loom. Shiny new rear calipers fitted Here is the diff In properly: Fuel tank installed: Bodywork shots up next: Front of the car with an engine shaped hole: Front suspension going in: Running the brake hoses Westfield loom going in: I then got my mate to drive me down to pick the car up with the new garage build and loads of room in there (there isn't now)..... here are a few shots of the car in her new home: Looking good already..... I love the colour and I don't think there are many like it around. The gorgeous FW rear: The front calipers were the race spec Hi-Spec calipers. I really wanted to have the APs and I found some for sale, so I part-exchanged them and had the new set ready. AP racing - These are supposed to be fantastic brakes: I then bought the engine from @Tom (T3OMF) - Cotswolds AO who is a top chap, had a cuppa and transported the parts back to sunny but cold Derbyshire:
  4. Hello Everyone, Hope you are all well and looking forward to helping me with my many questions that will surely be posted over the coming months , but hopefully not Years. My name is Mark and have been looking to build my own kit for decades, but due to financial and time constraints have never really got it off the ground. The kids have finally left the nest , so no more running around after them and for some unknown reason the finances also look better. My mechanic skills are limited, changed brakes, differentials, universal joints and even repaired a wiring loom for my Spitfire after it had a bit of an electrical fire. We've gone for the FW special Edition over three modules mainly because I didn't want to strip a SDV and I don't have the space available to store everything during the build. Had some upgrades ... wide track wishbones, front & rear calipers, sport turbo seats, 4 point harness and heater (recommended by Simon to keep Dawn, my wife, nice and warm). Also had the aluminium panels, brake lines and fuel lines fitted by Westfield. Not intending racing her but more to roam the countryside during weekends ... Picked her up on Saturday (4/11/2017) and is now proudly sitting in the garage. Sunday was the first day and already hitting questions. Thanks to the previous build blogs we know that the 'indicator relay' does not fit through that hole ... how did everyone get round putting it through the hole? Thanks for reading Mark

    jonjh1964's XI Build

I managed to find a Midget as a donor, not in the best shape (it's a complete mess really) but it's one of the last 1275 engines, built in late 1974, and looking at other XI builders blogs and posts most of the parts are refurbished or upgraded as part of the build. Chris from the Dorset Area, provided the transport and his outstanding trailer reversing skills meant that the car was rolled straight into the garage. The first couple of sessions in the garage has resulted in the engine, gearbox, steering column, steering rack, engine, gearbox and SR mounts and hand brake lever. Before going any further I'm going to make a couple of boxes on rollers to stand the chassis on once I've removed the front uprights and rear axle. I was slightly concerned that the steering rack mounts are different to the alloy ones in the build manual. Mark Walker believes that they have the same spacing and has offered to match them a chassis if I supply the mounts and rack with the column and rear axle when they go for modification. I've also got a growing collection of parts in boxes to refurbish or replace all the brakes, bearings and seals before fitting to the car. Remaining items to remove are: instruments, front uprights, prop shaft and rear axle off the car. I can get the body off to the scrapyard and make some space in the garage. Unfortunately I'm going to be away with work over the next couple of weeks so opportunities to get to the garage will be limited.
  6. New visitor here. Mark from Oxfordshire. I have an orange and black complete Zetec SE kit on order and I should be picking it up in two weeks time ( fingers crossed weather etc). This is my second build, sort have got a rather expensive build habit forming. I have to confess I embraced the dark side first, I assembled a Caterham 160 in 2016 / 2017. All IVA'd and great fun on road and track, looking forward to the challenge of assembling the Westy 2 Litre, the test drive was great so looking forward to 150 BHP vs 80 BHP. House rule is I can keep the 160 till the Westy is IVA'd after that I have to decide which I like best and sell the other, not looking forward to that decision, but we have to eat apparently. Spec for westy. Wide front track, 4 point harness, MSA Roll Bar, Heater, Half hood, sidescreens, Turbo seats, westy calipers, stone guards. Will do a youtube channel for the westy build and link it to this forum if that is allowed. Did a youtube channel for 160 build if anybody interested https://youtu.be/LLMKo96xB4w No pipe bending. simple wiring and fewer rivets, so I am expecting more fun with Westy build. Ah well better book the Luton. Just one question. Are Westfield reliable with collection date ? They keep saying 16 March, should I expect a last minute delay ? Regards

Now that my car is starting to look like a car, it occurred to me that I suspect its probably not covered under our household insurance. Has anybody any experience, or suggestion on if its possible to get a policy to cover the car, which as its in-build, as obviously I cant insurer it any normal route it as its not got a registration yet. Appreciate any suggestions or companies that might be able to help?

    Starting a Build

Hello, just taken delivery of my Sport250 kit. No manual as yet just the ten year old rolling chassis manual. Is it normal to wonder what the hell I've done? At the moment we think we'll spend more time trying to work it out than building...
  9. This thread doesn't start with a trip to the Westfield factory, or a picture of a shiney floored empty garage, it starts with a long neglected unfinished machine, that looks like this As you can see it's as much a restoration as it is a build. It's a 1991 Pinto Seiw that has never been near a road. Bought by a friend as an unfinished project in 1993 and never progressed further than this. Aiming to Get it road legal eventually if at all possible, maybe, well we can always just do a few track days in it, let's see how far we get
  10. I have been in-touch with Simon from Westfield who has told me there is a new build manual on the way, which should time nicely for me in about 6 to 8 weeks, but just wondering what others have used in the mean time? I have a pretty well setup double garage space, with a good set of workbenches. Lots of DIY tools (It’s a man thing), pillar drill, a few electric hand tools, pretty decent air compressor, good 4” Record vice, as well as quite a lot of tooling in the form of hammers and spanners etc. Have a good pair of tressels to hold the chassis up for the start. My father in-law (well Ex father in law) has built a low-cost, so I know he has an engine hoist, although for some reason I want one for my own, air drill which he thinks was the Bee’s Knees and an air riveter all of which he will lend me. I’ve recently fitted an air filter to my compressor, so can deliver oiled air as required.

    Build complete

So I think I have finished my build! It has taken 1 year 4 months since I bought the Mazda. Can anyone see anything glaringly obvious that looks like an IVA fail? I am chancing it with the front indicators, is this a bad move? Steering wheel pad not fitted yet. Any advice would be appreciated
  12. 1 Ton Engine Crane, Load Leveller, both used once only as new, and unused Engine Stand. £100 all three - £237 new price, Because of weight this has to be collection only purchase from Billericay in Essex.
  13. “Smile – you’re in Sharjah!” Mmm, well that’s what the flowers spell out, next to Sharjah bus station. Sharjah’s the third largest State in the UAE, after Abu Dhabi and Dubai - and Mandy and I live and work here. It’s car friendly; low tax – hence cheaper to buy - affordable insurance, a cheap flat-rate annual registration (road tax equivalent), cheap speeding fines and extremely cheap fuel. So, on a visit to the Newark show last summer I handed my credit card to Simon at Westfield and ordered a Mega S2000. A colleague here who’s built a Cobra advised me to buy a kit where everything came together in a box, as he’d found it frustrating waiting for individual parts to come from the UK - so I ordered everything in one hit. And since I’m planning on using it for the track days which are frequented by super-cars, I took the various race options. With temperatures being what they are here, I’ve got various extra cooling measures, too With the high-speeds that the supercars reach on the long straights here, I want to maximise top speed and thus need to minimise aerodynamic drag while also keeping the front end down. Had a very interesting thread here a few months ago on that and will be trying a few things later. For months we only had a picture of the car being gathered up in the factory: But now, finally, our car has arrived! The import was, let’s say, not plain sailing (though we could track the progress of the ship on the web!), but with goodwill from everyone from Westfield through the shippers and importers it got to our front gate in the end. If anyone reading this is thinking of importing to another country, I recommend to be fully involved early on in the shipment process. Note the delivery driver's footware! And the colour of the sky here - ho ho ho! And after a couple of hours carefully taking apart boxes. The engine hoist in the picture came from Dragon Mart - along with various other items of garage equipment and tools. Unbelievably cheap. So cheap, it hadn't been assembled correctly so I had to shove the engine pallet into the garage!

    Trailer Build Diary

(I started a blog, but feel a forum will be better for comments ect. Thanks Paul and Terry for your comments so far) I built my Westfiield last year and have a nice home for it in my garage. Due to work I am due to move in October and where I am moving to there is no garages - I also tend to move every 2 years and can't guarantee if I will have anywhere to store it. My solution is to build an enclosed trailer. I explored many options including purchasing a Brian Williams trailer, but spending the same on a trailer as I have done on the car is a bit silly and I don't have that cash lying around anyway - so thats definitely not an option! I researched car trailers quite a lot and my next option was to buy a car trailer and build a roof over it (in simple terms). But again, car trailers are quite expensive and also pretty heavy as they are usually not designed to take additional structures on top - so it was back to the drawing board. I found some people who had used caravan chassis to build car trailers and that this was a possible option. I wanted to make sure that my trailer was strong enough and this would be my main issue. So I set about looking for a suitable donor caravan to destroy in revenge for its years of slowing motorists on the narrow roads of Devon . After trawling e-bay and having multiple sales pulled out from under my feet I started to despair. This was until I found a caravan breakers only 5 miles from me with chassis bare and ready for action! The chassis cost me £130 which I felt was the best option. Looking at the individual components suspension, braked hubs and braking towing hook this price would save me loads and give me the basic chassis to build upon. This blog will show the progression I have been through so far and I will continue to update it with loads of photos. And for those of you who like big mechanics and trucks - there will be some of those around in the background too!!
