  1. A few of us did the "introduction to Sprinting" day at Curborough this morning. A couple of laps of Curborough thrown in for free which was an absolute hoot!

  3. Sticking with the theme of hoses I then moved onto the coolant lines to connect the radiator at the front to the engine in the rear. The cold size was relatively easy as it’s a straight line along the side of the chassis up to the water pump inlet. The hot return takes a much more convoluted route weaving it’s way through the birds nest of chassis tubes to find its way back to the front. 5m of aluminium tube and 10 silicone hose joiners later it’s finally done.

  6. Thanks for your replies so soon and also the details for the local AO. I’m sure I will come across a few people soon with a meeting coming up this month if my other half doesn’t see I have disappeared.. Not sure you folks have a secret handshake at these meetings ? At this time of the year, the bike could be transport too for getting out as well as my daily drive?…but no ideas of using the engine in a project please haha 😂. Any advice would always be useful but I’m taking a shortcut to buy a complete car as building would be impossible with no space here…always like fettling though (is that the word?). Cotswold area here is perfect for those ride outs but the car too be brilliant especially when fuel prices drop! 😎.

  8. Good Luck Scott! As you might remember, my Good Lady is also clinically extremely vulnerable and she's avoided it so far too. As another poster said, you've waited until the more dangerous strains have passed hopefully. Please keep us informed.

  9. Thanks, that’s reassuring and appreciated, glad your mum came through it fine. 😊👍 I communicated the news to to rest of the committee via WhatsApp with the above photo, and @Mark Redpath - WSCC Membership Secretary said from that photo I was pregnant. I replied if I was, I wanted to know who the father was, because I don’t remember a thing! 🤬

  10. Thanks Alan, yes after all these years of it being in boxes it’s good to see it looking more like a car again. progress would be faster but it’s burning through money faster than I can earn it!

  11. Welcome. @Martyn Vann - Warwickshire AO will help you regards the meets at the Falcon. Really nice group of people but watch out for @aegas he is a complete nutter 😀 Bought mine from ToyBox. No problems at all. Would recommend. Normally has a variety of cars to sit in which enables you to make the right decision even if he doesn’t have the one you want. Keep looking. It will be the best thing you will ever buy. Changed my life.

  12. With the arrival of several more deliveries through the post I’ve been able to make more progress in the last week. First delivery was the manifold gaskets that I’d forgotten to order before. I actually found a complete new old stock gasket set that worked out cheeper than buying individually. Next onto the oil breather hoses for the rocker cover and gearbox. I’d opted to use Aeroquip pushfit socketless fittings but this turned into a much more difficult job to assemble them than I’d ever imagined. To push the hoses home fully you need hands with a vice like grip and the arm muscles of a weight lifter, by the time I was done several hours later my palms were red raw and my arms aching. I had to rethink the gearbox fitting as I’d originally fitted a 1/2” BSP to -08 JIC adaptor to then take a 90 degree hose fitting but there wasn’t enough room for that and it clashed with the gear linkage so I had to switch to a 1/2” BSP banjo. I’ve had to keep the hose length long to avoid kinks which I’m not happy with as I’d rather the hose sits flat across the top of the gearbox. It’ll do for now but I may change it later on.

  15. If any one cares, this year Rush Motorsport is taking the step from "averagely skilled, wannabe track day hero" to "distinctly below average, hopefully don't come last circuit racer". Lets be honest, its a mid life crisis. Its something I've always wanted to do and now I've got to 40 and finally have a child, I felt like I was running out of time. The stars have aligned, I'm in the fortunate position to be able to afford it and the wife is being surprisingly supportive, without which it would be impossible. So what does this year look like? A few arrive and drives in BRSCC MX5 Clubman Championship: Silverstone Grand Prix - 21st May Oulton Park - 23rd July I'm going to try to get a drive at Donington in September, before buying my own car and doing the full championship next year. Its 16 rounds over 8 days, each event it 15 min quali, then 2 x 15 min races. What is nice about the Clubman series is it all happens on one day - which is great if you are time constrained like me (Those heady days of sunny afternoons spent in the garage with @Simon Waterfall Syman84 tinkering with our oily bits are long gone). So yeah, that's that. I'm testing the car at Silverstone on 20th because i've not driven the GP track before, don't plan to test before Oulton or Donny - its gets really expensive really quickly. I'm being realistic with my expectations, the racing is close and the fast guys are A LOT faster than I am. Grids are 30+ cars, there are 35 already for Silverstone and people are still booking. A top 20 finish for me would feel like a world championship win, so my goal for the first one is, stay out of trouble and end both races in a higher position than I started. The point of the thread is that if anyone has any questions or is considering it, ask away and I'll be as honest and open as I can. The raw footage will be on my youtube channel, I might do a vlog if I can be bothered and you can watch the races live on BRSCC youtube channel.

Its a long route and I plan to go there and back in 1 day, I think a couple of the Bristol group fancy coming but of any wants to join me on the way up or meet us at the Ponderosa then stick a post on here.. Praying for the best of Welsh weather 🤣

  17. We have a slight change of date for June's meet, we've shifted to the first Tuesday, for this month. The plan is to start at the Golden Pheasant, 7.30pm, as normal, but by 7.45, we will head out for a run to the Swettenham Arms, which has a Classic Car get together on Tuesdays, through the summer. So remember, 7.30pm Tuesday the 7th June, at the Golden Pheasant.

  18. Hi @Iplodius, you will be welcome at the Falcon whatever the mode of transport (shamefully I will be in a turbo diesel!). Sue and I are ex-bikers too so know where you are coming from and can confirm that a Westfield is a great replacement. Hope to see you on Thursday 19th at the Falcon, from around 7.30pm. Also, thanks to @RobH72 and @AndrewBClarke for the kind words too. Martyn

  20. @Iplodiusyou will be met with open arms at the Falcon next Thursday, I’m quite sure if the weather plays ball there will be plenty of cars and owners there to talk and listen to, there’s a wide range of cars from old pre-lit to new FW’s from toybox and supercharged flying machines!! It’s just an informal tyre kicking social gathering, just make sure you make yourself known and you’ll be introduced to the crowd . @AndrewBClarkewhy am I a nutter 🤪 we’re more sane than you country bumpkin’s 😘

  21. I am sure you will be fine Scott. My daughter works around your area and at the moment they have very few Covid patients in ITU and most of those are unvaccinated. However, if you have an oxygen saturation test machine use it and if the levels drop go to A&E do not call 111 as some well meaning young kid will read off a script and delay treatment. As I said I am sure you will be fine

  25. @Scott Young (Captain Colonial) - Club Secretary I share your trepidation, being in the semi-shielding set myself (and still avoiding it so far). But a friend of ours has leukemia and her consultant has told her not to worry too much about Covid as 'it's not what it was'

  26. SHMBO has it at the moment too and is currently sat on the sofa feeling groggy and watching crap tv. im doing my best to stay away from her so I don’t catch it too, so more time in the garage for me.

  29. At least you've picked a 'better' strain to catch. Hope all goes OK. 🤞👍 Fwiw my mum caught it a fortnight ago, mid 70s classed as vulnerable and was in the shielding group as she has copd. She was scared stiff. She came through just fine.

  31. Welcome from South Derbyshire (about 2 miles from Toybox in fact!). I know loads of people that have come the "bikes to kit" route. They are about the only thing that will give you the thrill of a bike on 4 wheels. Toybox are great, Andrew and Dale are nice guys and won't pressure you into a sale. You do pay a premium, but the cars are cosmetically as close to new as you will find. As for the Falcon meet, yes of course you can take a daily driver (even a diesel 😂) to a meet, in fact its quite common if the weather is bad. @Martyn Vann - Warwickshire AO is your local AO, he is a genuinely lovely guy and a font of Westfield knowledge! You also have a lot of active members in your area that I'm sure will assist and advise you in your search 👍

  37. i thought this maybe of interest to those that like to use different tools in their shed but dont have a lot of room. i welded up an insert that i bolted down to the concrete floor then made a few different up stands that just drop in and out so you can store them under the bench or in the corner its an easy thing to do anyone could make the same setup for their workshop.

  40. Thanks Nic, it’s taken much longer than I’d planned to get to this stage but this is bigger than any restoration I’ve taken on before now. I couldn’t have got to where I am now without the help of JMW motorsports who are just up the road from home and have been increasingly helpful both with the loan of their workshop space last year for the fabrication and their contacts in the motorsport community to do the jobs that I don’t have the skills for. They put me in contact with Richard who did the roll bar and chassis repairs and Andy for the engine work. Richard spends the majority of his time making repairs the BTCC and GT grids whilst Andy works for a current BTCC driver and ex LeMans GT Winner. I certainly couldn’t have found this level of talent alone.

  41. On to todays jobs and all the rest of the engine ancillaries have been fitted and the coolant hoses connected up, I still need to route and make the hoses that run to the front of the car and connect to the radiator. The exhaust and inlet manifold have been temporarily mounted in place but due to a slight oversight on my part I’d forgotten to order a new manifold gasket so it’ll have to wait till another day before I bolt it on permanently. Oil catch tank fitted, a job for next time will be to make up the breather hoses to the engine and gearbox. The last job for the day was to swap the rocker cover over to something more befitting of the engine bay. The colour I haves it painted in is a hint at what’s eventually to come for the bodywork. Finally a few photos of how the engine bay looks now.

  42. Yes I quite like it for all its quirks. When I was having the brazing done on the chassis I was very specific in my instructions for them not to grind flush any of the past alterations or straighten out the dents as to me they’re all part of it’s history. I considered a concentric slave but the mounting would have been complicated as there’s no flat surfaces and the original method was also slightly cheaper. the original method is also tried and tested with the AP clutch and roller release bearing as it’s the same as was used in the Bill McGovern /George Bevan Imp. Helpfully his grandson Jonathan Bevan who I bought the engine off from that car last year helped me source the parts needed.

  43. I guess it’s the downside of this being the prototype and the only one made. I’d normally expect these sorts of things to be ironed out by the time it gets to production. when it was in bare metal it was easy to see where tubes had been cut out to run coolant hoses and things changed to make it fit. This is the arrangement of the clutch slave assembled either side of the chassis rail. You can also see how the rail had to be scalloped out on the top side to clear the bell housing.

  44. Just what I wanted - Covid. I’ve managed to go 2 years without it - I guess with 75% of the population having had it, it was inevitable. A tad worried though as I was in the shielding group. Wish me luck!
