Many years ago, my dad tried beer brewing but it didn't last long - inconsistent brews and exploding bottles. Luckily, it is legal to distill in NZ for personal consumption - as long as you don't sell it, it's all good, so he's been distilling for the last twenty years. He has used it for barter, if someone does him a favour or a 'cashie', they go away with a bottle of bourbon under their arm. Whether that is for profit is arguable, and frankly the authorities are busy enough chasing weed farms and meth labs to be worried about some old coot 'giving away' hooch! His still is a converted copper household hot water cylinder, and he yields 33 litres per batch. Consistently 36-38% alcohol, you don't get a hangover because he charcoal filters it for months, and keeping the alcohol percentage low means you don't go blind! Essentially vodka, he then flavours it with essences from the home-brew shop to get scotch, bourbon, gin, rum etc. To further the taste, a bottle of whisky will get a stick of oak dropped in and left to diffuse, bourbon gets hickery etc - the sticks come from the homebrew shop and are from cut-up old distilling barrels. My mum is in on it too and makes Baileys, and her two favourites - mason jars stored with gin-soaked prunes (lovely with ice-cream), and brandy-soaked red grapes.3 points

Can’t believe I forgot one of the other best bits about the Woodlands camp site: we try and grab a big block of space, early, on the Thursday, which means for three and a bit days we have the WSCC village! Again, this helps transform the event from “just” a fantastic race weekend, with some great entertainment built in, in to a real fun social gathering. Though as a tiny amount of alcholol may be consumed, do bring ear plugs as singing and snoring may break out at random times!3 points

Before I get too far with assembly I thought I'd better get the brake lines fitted. I'd actually planned to do it last weekend until I found I hadn't quite got enough brake pipe so I decided to leave it until I had bought some more. As with the first car I wanted to avoid using any modern fixing methods and definitely no cable ties so for the hard lines I'm using brake saddles from the Series 1 Land Rover and BSA Norton rubber cable ties.2 points

One step forward and two back this week. I'd been looking at wheel options for the Carburol and had originally planned to fit Minilite wheels. Being a 10" 4x4" PCD mini fitment there's plenty of choice and I particularly liked the look of the 67 motorsport show car with them on. As I'd got a spare pair kicking around the garage I dropped them onto the car for a quick look and to my surprise they didn't fit The fronts went on fine but the offset was all wrong at the rear even with the standard 1" spacers. The inside edge of the rim locked itself to the upright and there was no hope of them ever fitting. After some intense googling and careful measuring a 5x10 minilite is an ET17 offset, but as it transpires I need an ET0 so not a hope of getting them to go on. The options open to me were to move up to a 12 or 13" wheel as these diameters were used on the post 1968 JW4's and available in the correct offsets for the Hillman Imp and ?mg Midget or failing that find something other than a 10" Minilite. More googling and the only wheels I could find that were close to ET0 in a 10x5 were the revolution 4-spoke, this is one of my favourite wheels as when during my younger years I ran a set on my RC cars, but on a JW4 they weren't ever an original option and so not one to consider if I want to do an accurate rebuild. For the same reason I also had to discount the larger wheel sizes as whilst they were used on the post 68 cars this chassis is a 1966 build and so would only ever have used a 10" wheel. So that then begs the question of what I could use? There was a long pause for thought and Then I remembered that I had just the thing lurking in the garage, I's been saving them for something else, but needs must and what better wheel to fit? If you've been following this thread since the beginning you've probably guessed by now but for the benefit of everyone else it's the JA Pearce Magna. Thankfully unlike the last set I bought for the first car didn't have to sell a kidney to buy these but they're a little rough around the edges after 50 years and need repainting but they should clean up ok and most importantly they fit and are the correct period wheel for the car.2 points

Here's some advanced notice. The provisional dates are 26-28 July 2019 which will be confirmed in early December, once the FIA has met to ratify the F1 calendar for 2019. Tickets will be available as before as a package with two adult tickets and one infield display pass for the WSCC area. I've asked for slightly more space than last year but, in any event, the space allocated will be based on cars registered when booking opens and our club code is generated. I've requested a parade lap to celebrate the 20th year of the FW400. Tickets will go on sale in early November, here are provisional car club prices. This competition is back for another year and if you need an excuse to drive your Westfield, here is one. The MOT certificate records an odometer reading. This competition is looking for who has the biggest difference between their Westfield’s 2017 and 2018 MOT certificate odometer reading. In my opinion getting the ‘Westfield’ miles in makes you a winner anyway. The prize for first place is £50 worth of vouchers to spend at the Westfield Factory Parts Department. Second and third place will get you £10 and £5 respectively off your membership renewal in WSCC for next year. What are you waiting for? Get driving. THE BORING BITS • The mileage must be in a Westfield. • The competition is open to WSCC members only, not the Committee or Area Organisers. • The closing date is midnight 10th November 2018. • Submit entries to peak@wscc.co.uk with a copy of your MOT certificate attached. • The judge’s decision is final. • You must agree to your entry being published in Westfield World magazine and online in the WSCC forum. • Prize must be redeemed within 12 months, is non-transferable and no substitute prize or cash equivalent will be offered. • If you have won first place in this competition before you cannot enter it again.1 point

Ben I know that you don't want to put anymore money into the car but a proper map is not all about power its about getting a nice reliable power and torque curve this can be achieved still maintaining the lower numbers, when I had mine mapped it was making way past 270 bhp but Matt Thorne ME Motorsport who mapped mine advised that with what I had fitted at the time 250 bhp and 230 ftlbs was enough safe and he tuned a lovely flat torque curve in mine so no big rush just steady stream of very usable power almost like a large normally aspirated engine . I think that will be the making of your car and if you have the motor reasonable the mapping may not be that bad talk to Skuzzle or ME Motorsport. I'm defiantly getting mine remapped once I get it back up and running as I have new bigger injectors 650cc Bosch, Skunk2 inlet manifold and up-rated turbo plus of course a full rebuild and full forging. I'm using the same ME221 ECU so I can adjust the settings for the bigger injectors but the professionals really are worth using. I think you would be very very surprised the difference a visit to a good tuner and a rolling road can make, Plus you can show the map to prospective customers so they really know what they are getting.1 point

When I had to get the Westfield screen repaired, (rightly or wrongly) I just rang the normal Thatcham number. 0333 207 6597 which quite ironically, is currently, as I write, the banner advert for this thread!1 point

Definitely listen to prudence if she calls - she may save your life! These can be serious environments, which I know you're aware of. Although these sorts of Nature's challenges are the most rewarding. Have done a lot of walking in Scotland in the early months. In May generally weather is much kinder and sunnier, although I have still ended up being out in full on blizzard Winter conditions. Which is fine if correctly equipped and competent navigating in near zero visibility.1 point

Hi all, I think I am going to plump for Saturday November 10th, location TBC, as this will give me a week to finish the Westfield World article off prior to submission? Thanks for all the support and kind words, no doubt I'll be pinging the other AO's for help at some point! @Terzo204 correct I am in the Emersons Green area, NE Bristol. I'm sure we'll still let you tag along in either the Caterham or Tin Top! @CrisisWolf yes Julie did point me in your direction and that would be great for any help with integrating with kitNet too. @mikef will do and hope the move goes well! @SXRORY Hope that you can make it, Westy or Tin Top? @Tom (T3OMF) - Cotswolds AO That would be great to see you and say Hi. @Dave tucker - Sounds like a plan for a future run South (in-laws are Yeovil based so a double win).
