  1. Next up was a job I hadn't planned to do but after a chance meeting and a discussion at the Maldon car shown earlier in the year I decided that I'd get one of the seats covered. Back in the 1960's the original race seats were covered in a padded black vinyl which offered a degree of comfort but I'd originally planned to use the plain black shells for my rebuild rather than having them covered. The bare shells offer a bit more room for the larger driver and also being a race car would mean they're easier to dry after any wet weather. I'd already intended to get the steering wheel recovered as the vinyl was worn through and torn in a couple of places, but since I had a spare seat shell I though it'd give them that to try too. The company who did the wheel and seat for me is County Coachtrimmers near Maldon and I have to say what a cracking job they've made of it. The wheel looks like new now, but More so I'm very impressed with how the finished seat has turned out. I gave them one of the old seats as a patten to work to for the stitching and they've matched the original beautifully.

  4. Well that was a great turn out. 7 cars in all. It's great to see more people coming out to play in the lovely Cotswolds. We headed over to a new venue that's nearing completion the other side of Stratford. It will be a great petrol head venue when it's done and am sure we will be frequent visitors. It was lovely to meet @LukeW and @Andy Westwood for the first time. Also we met only the 3rd lady owner I know off, @Jude the others being my better half and @Julie Hall - AO Representative, Peak District AO It's was great to see @Jude enjoying the car her husband built 20 years ago. It was then off to Wellesbourne airfield cafe for food and refreshments, BLTs, baked potatoes, chilli con carne, ham egg and chips and all day breakfast were soon devoured. It was then off down through the Wolds to Burford and then a run back up the Fosse way home. A great day all round. Thank you all for your company today.

  7. The last parts for the axle were finally ready for me to collect from the fabricators this week so finally I could complete the assembly of all the parts. The delay was due to the difficulty in machining some of the parts. The axle itself is made from 3 parts, the end of which is a cut down front axle from a Classic mini. The mini axle needed to be turned down so it could be located within a corresponding recess in a ground steel shaft that would ultimately run on a pair of kart bearings, but we hadn't factored that the mini axle would be hardened steel. Three lathes of ever increasing sizes later and we could barely make a dent in it so eventually the decision was made to send it away to be ground to the appropriate profile. The brake drum flange is likewise made in a similar way by turning down the mini drive flange. After a trial assembly I found the drum wasn't quite sitting as close to the backplate as it should do as it was bottoming out on the spline so it was onto the mill to take a few mm off the face. I've not owned the mill for long having picked it up a few months ago in the bargain area of my local machine mart so I wasn't too sure how well it would cope with the job in hand, but as it turned out everything went fine. That photo reminds me that I must get tidy the work bench some time soon.

  8. Hi thank you yes I love the new car! I’m so glad I took the plunge and bought it. I’ve spend all of yesterday and most of today cleaning and polishing and making orders for varies bits and bobs to make it a minter both cosmetically and mechanically.

  12. It looks like, providing you are using either a 225mm or 253mm joist and have a 15mm wallboard to the ceiling (rather than the usual 12.5mm) then you wont need to install any accoustic insulation within the depth of the joist.

  18. Hi all, just to let you all know I’m 32 years of age and been after a Westfield for a long time, I’ve wanted one ever since I was a kid, finally taken the plunge for a 10 year old Sigma/zetec-se 1600cc SEiW model. I’ve not collected it yet but I can’t wait, deposit is down and it’s not even that far away from me. Im based In Herefordshire soon to be moving to Malvern. Could you answer a few things for me to help me out a bit; im after an intake pipe see my wanted parts ad. The current one is a little worn/split where it’s obviously chafed on the bonnet or such like. i will need to do the Cambelt kit and water pump ASAP and it’s done 11k and it’s on it’s original belt. I believe the belt interval is 10years or 100k so it’s age is expired. Which timing tool kit do you guys recommend I buy? And guides online? I’ve done Cambelt without issues before but not a tapershaft type so i’ll Be ultra ultra careful. Are the SEiW limited slip diffs? Is mine a type 9 gearbox? It seems to be ..... it drives aswell as the red top caterham super seven I hired last autumn anyway and similar ratios perhaps. Mines a Newer car with much less miles. It was kit built and it’s on its second owner from new. I’m to be the third owner since new. I will be looking first of all to take it for Saturday & Sunday drives, then look into meets and definitely to take the Mrs, nephew or my dad to Shelsley Walsh in it to spectate initially haha Anyway thanks all!

  27. Thanks, I can't take too much credit for much of the engineering as other than drawing it and then bolting it all together At the end I have to rely on other people and businesses to do much of the welding or machining. I'd love to have a better equipped workshop but I just don't have the space for all the tools I'd need.

  33. I asked a similar question on Facebook and a few people recommended a Stormforce cover from covermycar. They do look very good and what I really like is you can add options such as security lock, alarm system and additions elasticated edging to help keep it in place.

  34. I’ve spent more on cheap ones over the years than one Hamilton cover that lasted the same length of time would have cost. I guess that’s where the old saying buy cheap buy twice comes from. (Though to be fair, it isn’t always the case with Westfield parts.i deed, the most expensive car cover I ever bought, way more than a Hamilton, was also the quickes to fail, and tbh, was never very good from the start.)

  38. Thanks guys. There was only time for a few small jobs this weekend. Firstly the chassis for the Carburol Special was lifted down from the rafters where its hung for the last few years. This necessitated a tidy-up of the garage to make enough room for it to sit on the floor. I'm currently exploring options to give a bit more building room. The axle assembly has been trial fitted and needed only a slight reaming of the fixing holes to allow the bolts to slide in more smoothly. then a trial fit of the bodywork. The Carburol presents a few challenges for fitting the body since the chassis has been substantially modified from it's JW4 origins. The new dash hoop projects higher than the top of the bodywork and the forward stays to the rollbar will need some cutting of the cockpit sides. I've got a small piece of damaged bodywork that I'd picked up a couple of years ago with some other stulff that I'd kept for such a task. As it turns out this is the same bodywork that adorned my other JW4 but had been removed from the car 30 years ago.
