Bringing this thread up to date the whole lot was completed and emailed off to the MSA 2-weeks ago for their final approval and now I'm pleased to say that todays post brought me a pack containing the signed Homologation Documents. It hasn't been the easiest journey to get to here, and the process in total took about 3-months to complete. I'm sure a car manufacturer with experience in making applications could have done it in half the time, but I'm glad I did it as I now have a roll bar which to me is much more in keeping with the diminutive scale of the car than that which the MSA blue book would have required from me. Also and equally as important I have a bolt-on solution which other owners of JW4's can adopt for their own cars if required.

  2. Having successfully completed the simulation the next stage would be to have a roll bar made. To save time I actually took a chance and ordered this before Christmas whist MIRA were still doing their simulation, it was a gamble to take but I had confidence in my design and it also allowed me to save several weeks in the process. In fact Martin at MJS Fabrication turned this around in only 1-week for me. The final step once all that is completed its time to submit the application formally to the MSA for certification. The application document itself that needs to be prepared consists of 6 pages of details and questions. This includes various drawings of the roll bar structures from various angles, details of the attachment method, component weights, material specifications for the steel tube. The last two pages are reserved for a series of photographs of a fully assembled roll bar showing the bar fitted to the car at various angles, the different connections and attachments and also the location and details of the unique ID plate. As one can also never have enough stickers I had to get a stack of 80 metal stickers printed up for the ID plates (that being their minimum order ) That should leave me with a few spares since Johnny Walker only ever made 56 cars in total

  3. All 400 tool rolls now finished, ready for Stoneleigh: Now to find a place in the house to store them - they fill my estate car completely! The company that did the screen printing obviously want more business off the club and without my asking, made a few sample foam coasters - clever sods. It's good to be chairman sometimes! Apparently they've also done a couple of sample mugs, looking forward to seeing them - show bribe for next year's Stoneleigh, maybe?

You will only get a free Club Tool Roll if: > You attend the National Kit Car Show at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire on 30 April -1 May 2017 > You are a WSCC Member, Joint Member, Trader, or Sponsor The procedure will be simple - you can collect your Tool Roll when you collect your name badge in the outside marquee. This will make it easy for us to ensure only members receive a Tool Roll, and that they each receive only one. What will not be allowed: > Taking more than one Tool Roll > Collecting a Tool Roll for another member who can't make it to Stoneleigh > Posting a Tool Roll before Stoneleigh - collection at Stoneleigh only > Reserving a Tool Roll before the show - too complicated, too resource tapping. Show up early to avoid disappointment We have a limited quantity of these and they will be distributed strictly on a first come, first served basis. Any left over after the show will be taken to Silverstone where the same procedure will apply - we will have the leftover name badges from Stoneleigh so we will know who didn't make it to Stoneleigh and is therefore entitled to a free Tool Roll.   6. I have heard from a reliable source that the LDMC sprint on 1st and 2nd April will be a great event and people will get lots of runs as at present there are not that many people entered....so if you want plenty of runs then get your entry in now!!!!!

The documents were duly submitted to start the process and once agreement in principle had been obtained the next hurdle would be to obtain a calculation report from MIRA for the proposed design. Sadly MIRA were not being as generous as the MSA in waving their fees but luckily my past experience as a design engineer came in useful here as I was able to produce the 3D IGS Models they need to undertake the simulation as else I would have been charged extra for them to model it from drawings. The 3D models are loaded into their stress analysis software and from this 3-loads are applied simultaneously in different directions to simulate the effects of a severe accident and impact on the crash structure. For a car of less than 470kg the loads applied are13.2kN laterally, 49.5kN Longitudinally and 66kN Vertically The MSA technical guidelines allow for a maximum deformation of 50mm and thankfully my design passed with a maximum of 13.5mm.

  26. Me! So this week I decided to tidy up the wiring while prepping for Aim Dash, DTA ECU and Savage Switches installation. This involved lopping off a load of unused connections for such useless items as heaters, wipers, fans, analogue gauges, electric soft-tops etc (who needs such paltry items when an AeroScreen and Digi-dash does it all). This left me with a bag of spare goodies... But then I came to wire in my new switches and lights - and some just didn't work, like the brake warning and ignition lights. After a lot of head scratching, I realised there was no power getting to them (rather than a duff connection or dodgy LED) - which equated to no ignition-on feed to the green wires. First port of call = fuses. Nope, all good. Then it was the bodged in DRLs I that used the (now defunct) heater circuit as a means to be on with ignition. Nope. Then the fact that the ECU was not actually wired in yet and hence the fuel pump relay wasn't firing (and had a green wire going to it). Nope. OK, maybe it was the fact that I hadn't connected the alternator yet. Nope. Eventually it dawned on me that perhaps some of the green wires I had snipped off as part of the bag of connectors might be daisy chained and not Tee'd as I had assumed. Oh yes. You muppet! So undo all the neatly heat-shrunk and insulated ends I had added, connect the double-greens back up and daisy chain them again - bingo, we have power to the people!

  32. Thanks mate. Well, as I'm not going to do the full season, is not worth the trouble but no doubt I'll have to swap class in the future if B keeps being the ugly duck. I do have a Hans but i hate it. I have to try this híbrids posh systems to see if they are any better. I thought that for having a loogbook on date harness and seats were mandatory... Anyway many thanks for the explanation!

  45. Sorry, can't help with the actual question, but you might be surprised by the common solutions that people find most comfortable for touring. Nobody tours more than Buttercup - I think he prefers a half hood plus half doors and wind deflectors - allowing a really good amount of luggage to be tied on the back...
