chrisbin Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 gloss over grammer ....................hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... But that aside, I couldn't agree more. The "spelling isn't important" lobby always seemed to me to be the same as that "PC" lot............. Quote
Bananaman Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 I agree with the sentiment, but it is *crucial* to getting your point across well that you are able to spell. We'll gloss over grammer and sentence structure, to say nothing of comprehension, which seems to be on the decline as well... No point in an engineer proposing a revolutionary new type of w**ker engine... Plus if you can't spell it, we can't search for it... and then indexes are no good, and nor is anything that requires alphabetical or logical sorting where correct spelling of the words is crucial. When I were a lad, my exams were marked down for poor spelling. If that's not the case now, then dyslexics aside, I think that is a definite decline in educational standards and should be reviewed. Ever heard of thet program 'Grumpy Old Men ? Quote

Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 It's true though, it's all too easy to loose the meaning of what someone's trying to say through the fog of poor spelling and grammar. Spelling in particular has always been a weak spot with me, but I try. As A VX engined car owner, I've frequently used Mig Web in the past; some of the threads end up being virtually unreadable through a combination of poor English and [pet hate] text speak [/pet hate]. Very valid point as far as newsgroups are concerned though, how on Earth can we hope to search for anything if you're having to guess the spelling every time. ..and relax, feel much better now, just off for a lie down. Aves Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 Although poor spelling does enable you to get a bargain on ebay occasionally - I'm thinking here of my £100 Nitroeus Kit in particular. (£600 off the shelf) Quote

KenE Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 Aarrgghhh noooo - that over-used and inappropriate word HERITAGE again that I see a lot in the Boardroom and rarely on Blatchat!! No, I think the words LINEAGE or PEDIGREE better describe one (of many) exceptional facet of the Caterham Seven. (no puns about dogs pls!!! Quote

CateringVan Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 . . . and believe it to be the better car Why would that be ? What specifically about the Caterham makes it a better car than a Westfield ? Forget engine choice - both cars have Vx engines and the same gearbox, both are running on the same wheels and tyres. What's specific to a Caterham that makes it better than the equivelant Westy As I said I'm not going to be drawn into the 'which one is best' argument because we've all been there before I honestly believe that both cars are good, well designed, well made (apart from the crap 1990's Caterham powercoating ) and great fun. The technical arguments have all been done to death hundreds of time before, e.g De Dion vs IRS, Aluminum vs GRP, smaller vs larger, grass vs astroturf (do a search .....) and I see no point in restarting any of them. There is nothing I can say which is going to persuade anyone on here to sell their Westy and buy a Caterham purely on technical grounds so I'm not going to try. What I will say is that I was definitely biased towards wanting a Caterham ever since I read my first road test when I was a teenager. Despite that I started out with the intention of buying a Westy because I couldnt afford a Caterham, but having spent quite a bit of time looking into both I decided that I preferred Caterhams, and that if I didnt get one I'd wonder what I was missing. Without wanting to appear critical, and I'm certainly not trying to start an argument, the things persuaded me towards of getting a Caterham included - the variable quality of the Westfields I looked at; some were very good but some were quite rough, whereas even a tatty Caterham still seems to have a certain 'quality' to it. Thats not to say that all Westfields are poor quality; clearly there are some excellent ones about, but that the difference between a poorly finished Westfield and a superb one seems to be wider in the examples I've seen than the difference between a good and bad Caterham - the road tests I read all preferred C's to W's - the major 'open' race series (e.g the Jaguar Drivers club endurance racing) all seemed to be dominated by C's more than W's - and in the end I decided I much preferred the appearance of a Caterham to a Westfield. None of the above conclusively proves one car is better than the other, but might explain a little why I ended up with a Caterham. No doubt there are plenty on here who will vehemently disagree with all of the above, and I cant blame them if they do, but its my opinion and I'm going to stick to it. . What I havent done is slag off Westfields just because they are Westfields and I hope no-one does the reverse either... . Quote
