Matt Seabrook
By the way you should be ok if it got to 120 briefly as this happened to my car when a hose went and all is ok with my engine.
stu.graham
Ive noticed that with my new 80deg stat that the temp gauge rises to 90 - 95 and drops as the thermostat opens, never had the problem with a 90deg stat ie rises to 100 and drops. What size holes are required in the thermostat
thos
Mine hits 100 before dropping too, should I switch to an 80deg stat ? Anyone got part number ??

geofff
I'm going for the 78deg thermostat - drilled! and the 87-92 deg rad switch. Unless someone comes along in a minute and tells me I'm an idiot Ta Geoff
S8ight
QTH 101-74 deg. should fit also
geofff
Hi S8ight, I got the numbers of a previous posting of yours but obviously missed one off - I am an idiot I notice they're for Rovers amongst others according to my local factor. Will they fit my water rail? Which is the same thread as my zetec housing by the way. Ta Geoff
S8ight
same size on the top, just a bit shorter than the other two. it doesnt have the plate on the bottom, if that makes sense to you
chazpowerslide
Zetecs should run hot. I have a 92 degree stat in mine and it generally runs at 94-96 degrees with the fan coming in at close to 100. The Zetec is a modern engine designed to run hot help with the emissions and produce good power. I think it's generally understood that some of the non production (non Ford) cooling systems run the Zetec too cool and there are mods to correct this. The point is that engine temps in the high 90s are not really a worry with the Zetec, you should be more worried if it's running too cool (84-88 degrees) My Zetec SE runs the 4 core Escort rad with the standard MK2 Fiesta fan and a Dunnell cooling kit, there seems to be plenty of capacity cooling capacity in the system. If you are using the polo rad there should be plenty of capacity in the system also. What reasons do Westfield give for not using a header tank? Chaz. hammer
I have a 2.0L zetec with the raceline water rail, 82 degree stat (not raceline one with toggle thing in) with a single 3mm hole drilled in the stat on the side opposite the flow of water (so water has to flow round capsule to exit through hole. Car warms up quickly to just over eighty degrees. Thrash it and the temp rises to about 95 max. No sudden changes in temperature. The overflow chucks out a little water after you first fill the system or top it up. Prior to this I had a problem where the engine reached around 100 degrees and the stat still did not open. I put this down to there being no flow of water around the capsule (raceline water rail design) hence the drilling the hole curing it. thos
Any of you water-rail guys using the heater feed as a warm-up loop down to the lower pipe ?
JonnyBoy
Any of you water-rail guys using the heater feed as a warm-up loop down to the lower pipe ? yep... as per the raceline 'sketch' ...still doesnt improve anything for me though. I have a 4 core high fpi japanese rad though..

You get a clean more complete burn between 90-100 deg C. The engine will not run so mechanically tight at 80 deg C so friction losses are less. Well this is what happened when I have had my cars on the rollers
