markl
I am going to contact the Trading Standards Body on behalf of the vicar.. If you read the article closely you find that these people have been tricked, they all signed up thinking it was the Catering Academy. Where is Jamie Oliver? A quote from one source says "I brought my Wok to the meet and they told me how to make it cook faster" and finally the trader said” is de Dion? Or is it DJION? A type of axle” Exciting and gripping stuff Yawn…

Chris Elworthy
my other hobby is yacht racing and they have the worlds plumbiest accents, but for the majority are sound. And they can't even afford engines. How working class is that.
Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO
The Porsche can't be the one, cos they're only used in circuit racing Wrong I seem to remember a certain Bjorn Waldegard rallying a Porsche in the world Rally Championship back in the seventies, they were also very popular in tarmac rallying especially in Ireland, who remembers Billy Coleman? While were on the subject of Porsches Sam I've finally seen your video from Donington, Lionel certaintly went to town on it didnt he ? samcooke
And there was the 959 rally car. Should've said mainly used in circuit racing. You're right about the video - serious production time spent. He even managed to edit out that small child that I swerved to avoid, which caused the whole thing.

cast iron
The academy were at Harewood this weekend, we were in stitches, the jobs were obviously on some sort of Commentator sheet, all other classes were car specs previous times etc. Oh no not this lot, City banker, Pilot etc etc It really was sad. I think the next time the westys go we should don some job titles (please add your own) But what about Drug Dealer Pimp Loan shark Porn star Caterham salesman
neilwillis
Just a smallish point, but wasn't it a Lotus 7 originally? Just how do you get this bit about a Caterham being the original? They bought the rights, but that doesn't make it a Lotus does it? Put another way, BMW make a Mini Cooper, but Mini Cooper it aint!! Anyone who comes here telling us an original Lotus 7 is better cuz it's original, hats off to him, but Cateringvans fit engines that were made from aluminium still on the pile of scrap donated by your grannie to make Spitfires when the real 7 was at large! Nick M
Actually I think you're getting a wee bit carried away to be honest. The Caterham Seven uses the same basic chassis (bar amendments when they went to a de-dion back end) as the Series 3 Lotus Seven. It uses the same technique to fit the bodywork (stressed aluminium) as the Series 3 Lotus. Caterham do, therefore, have a valid claim that they are the only true descendent of the original Lotus Seven (issues about a company in South Africa aside). They have, however, chosen to update them as different engine solutions came along, but then Lotus did exactly the same thing. The early Lotus was fitted with engines like a side-valve Ford, then a pre-Xflow, small capacity Cosworth engines, then the Xflow, then the BD derivatives, etc., etc., etc. There's nothing new about fitting them with modern engines. I actually find the Caterham more aesthetically pleasing than a Westfield. And they are lighter and I'm prepared to accept that they handle a little better (particularly in terms of how the front suspension operates on turn in). BUT, Caterham persist in using an engine that I wouldn't chain round the neck of my worst enemy before kicking them in the river and they took an awfully long time to come up with a version of the car which fits the more, errrr, "generously proportioned" individual. They are also dreadfully expensive when you look at what you actually get - the deeper you dig, the more little points stand out as being disappointing or poorly engineered. What it boils down to, and I've said it before on Blatchat, is that if "history" is important then get the Seven. But if value for money is an issue then the Westfield makes more sense (or even a Sylva Striker). People buy Caterhams for all manner of reasons but I do genuinely feel it attracts a high percentage of badge snobs who give the rest of the owners a bad name. I've met enough Caterham owners to know they're not all like Wing Commander Muppet who only uses his car on sunny days, polishes the poor thing into oblivion, worries about stone chips, would have a heart attack if his engine went near the red line (and heaven forbid it ever find itself on a trackday - bunch of bl**** hooligans !! ) and who derides any "copy" as being inferior and not worthy of consideration. Would I ever have a Caterham ? Yes, in all probability. But there are other cars I would rather have, and one of them is sitting in my garage right now
neilwillis
Yes, a little OTT wasn't I I just don't accept that original is always best. And being 6'6" tall, I have different priorities when I choose a car perhaps than some. Did you see that a Caterham recently broke the world record for the timed 0-100 and back again? I don't withdraw the remarks, because I consider them valid, even if a little inflamatory I agree though, I have met some top blokes who own Caterhams, and the whole mine's better than yours is a little juvenile to say the least. All I can say is I choce the Westfield because for me it was the best of the bunch for MY needs. Knowing what I know now, I'd do exactly the same next time too. samcooke
Did you see that a Caterham recently broke the world record for the timed 0-100 and back again? Production car record, not world record. I'm fairly certain an F1 car would be quicker...
timd
And they are lighter and I'm prepared to accept that they handle a little better (particularly in terms of how the front suspension operates on turn in). Lighter maybe, but better handling - don't think so..
