Going down a hill quickly

After giving the chassis a lick of paint, today I’ve mostly been riveting. I didn’t count how many but that’s a lot of holes drilled and then the chassis panelled.

it’s starting to look like a Westfield 🤣

The same thought had crossed my mind after I’d finished fitting the panels 😀

Bit of assembly done today, got the front wishbones on and the rear axle. Really pleased with how well the home made polybushes are working.

I also trial fitted the steering rack so that I could measure and then cut down the steering arms to the right length.

A small touch, fitting the chassis plate. Believe it or not this is the first car I’ve designed and built entirely from scratch so it wears the number 01.

I think that is absolutely fantastic!

Even better: the size of the box of Kronenbourg in the picture! 40!!!

Now that's proper!

(I usually buy 6-packs)

A couple more hours after work tonight and I got the steering rack cut down to the right length, new threaded ends welded on and then fitted to the car.

I then spent a bit of time getting the front camber set and the toe-in to zero. To make this easier I clamped a couple of lengths of steel to the front uprights and then measured off both sides of the chassis till everything was parallel.

Final job before I had to stop and cook dinner was to swap out all the plain nuts on the suspension for nyloc’s and tighten them all up.

Front uprights assembled. The axles are a kart part I sourced which happened to have the right 17mm diameter for the moped hubs. They just needed a few washers to space them correctly for the callipers.

I’d previously stripped the hubs down, removed the seals and flushed out the original grease, this I then replaced with oil to reduce the rolling resistance.

Thanks Nic.

I feel I’m rapidly running out of time, only two months to go and I haven’t started thinking about bodywork yet.

Shouldn’t be a problem for a man who can remove an engine from a Westfield in two minutes…

That's just so slow....

I once removed an engine from an Audi A4 in under two seconds. True, it was by having a Civic Type R drive into it at speed, and you didn't specify whether the engine had to work after... :p

Not much to show for tonight’s progress but got the front brake lines made up and fitted.

I’m only fitting brakes on the front as I figure I won’t need to be using them other than to stop at the end but I have made provision for rear brakes if I want to fit them in the future.

This really is awesome. The build quality sets a few manufacturers to shame!
