KugaWestie Posted April 18, 2020 Author Posted April 18, 2020 I have managed to find a lamp with an equal split of reverse and fog LED’s which means I can french it into the body centrally.

KugaWestie Posted April 18, 2020 Author Posted April 18, 2020 Over the last day or so I have been working on the drivers door. So the same process as the passenger door, change the hinge tubes for the new design, respray the hinge and fit. Sand and fill the door both sides to get it something like and then etch prime it. Next fit the latch, fabricate a mounting bracket for the catch and get it all fitted and adjusted. The fit of this door is much much better straight off the bat, it still needs some work but nowhere near as much as the passenger side did.
KugaWestie Posted April 19, 2020 Author Posted April 19, 2020 I decided to take a break from the bodywork repairs/doors. So I made a little jig to enable me to cut the circular holes out for the headlight bowls. Once the hole was cut out, I offered up my cardboard template so I could drill two holes at 12 and 9 o’clock Holes drilled Headlight bowl cut outs done

Simon Marks. Posted April 19, 2020 Posted April 19, 2020 I wish I'd thought of that when I built my Eleven all those years ago! One for all those who follow behind. Simon
KugaWestie Posted April 20, 2020 Author Posted April 20, 2020 Today I improved the fit of the drivers door. Out with the filler again All sanded back, fine filled and now we have a nice fit
KugaWestie Posted April 20, 2020 Author Posted April 20, 2020 I have also been monitoring “bonnet creep”. By this I mean that the gas struts have been very slowly stretching the bonnet hinges whilst the bonnet is closed and the bonnet has been creeping towards the scuttle. So I decided to strengthen the hinges by adding a bracing plate on the side of the hinges
KugaWestie Posted April 21, 2020 Author Posted April 21, 2020 Busy day today on the bodywork. First job was to blow all the dust off with the compressor, then panel wipe the unpainted half of the car. Then 2 coats of etch primer gave me this. Looks good me thinks. Once it had dried (didn’t take long) I started having a real close look at what had just been painted. A few areas where some fine fettling of my reshaping work was needed, as expected. Then I got out my very bright LED torch and started having a real close look at the body. This showed up lots of pinholes all over the place. Here is a photo of the drivers door in direct sunlight to give you an idea. That’s a 1p pice to give an idea of scale. So I then spent a good couple of hours fine filling all of my circled areas on the body and sanding back. That got me to this. I am hoping that another coat of etch primer over this work will prove my fine filling has worked.
KugaWestie Posted April 21, 2020 Author Posted April 21, 2020 I had a chat with @Marto303 regarding the pinholes and tackled the door in a different way following his advice. I sanded back the etch primer with 180 grit and then put a fine skim layer of filler over the whole door. This then got knocked back with 180 grit and coated again with etch primer. A massive improvement. Here is a close up of the same area of the door where the penny was in the earlier photo
KugaWestie Posted April 21, 2020 Author Posted April 21, 2020 I am hoping that the pinholes on the body where I have filled come out ok without having to fine skim all of the body, but we will see how it looks once another coat of etch primer is on there
Kingster Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 Having been involved in developing training courses for paint applicators and paid to do this by genuine industry experts (that I know personally) who in turn get paid mega bucks for being called as expert witnesses in major coating failure disputes, I can get you some top notch information about what causes pinholes and how to fix it 😁👍
