So back to the build

I took the bellhousing off the gearbox and bolted it back onto the rear of the engine.

Now as the engine has already been through a total strip down, chemical bath, rebore etc and then rebuilt, I did not see the need to do this again.

Normally before I install an engine I will strip the head(s) away from the block, strip everything off the block and head(s), inspect/replace components as necessary, replace all gaskets, mask up and spray.

As said above, I don't want to strip it down totally. So I decided to take a different approach this time and strip off the starter motor, alternator, clutch slave etc. Then leave the spark plugs in and mask off all the manifold ports and openings.

Then just basically spray the lot!!!!!!!!

So fingers crossed it comes out alright in the end.

So here it is all primed up

This is going to sound weird but it is the speed and the ease you seem to do things that maybe some feel unable to add to the thread. A lot of Westfield owners wouldn't know where to start with a project like this as you bought a proper bitsa and are marrying things together without a manual.

For me it is great to see another proper build, with no disrespect to others, that takes some thought and is not just a throw a cheque book at it. Many will learn from this and the other none standard build threads, like the C type and maybe have a go at something else in future.

For my two penneth, you still would have been better to chamfer the edge of the engine mounts to get a fuller weld as at the moment the weld bead will still sit out leaving the bit sat on the chassis with less strength.

I always take a bit off each edge so the weld goes in about a quarter of the thickness from each side. If you are good with a welder and use high power you can get a good weld without doing that but it is easier in my opinion.

Thanks.

The engine mounts are fully welded now. Before I did the weld I took the angle grinder to the mount/chassis junction to vee them a little, and I did whack the power right up on the welder. So fingers crossed I have made a good weld

A weld prep (chamfer) allows you to ensure you get full penetration of the weld (usually from one side only) and therfore achieve maximum strength, rather than just a weld fillet "sticking" it together. If the weld doesn't fully penetrate there's a risk of introducing a stress raiser, which could lead to failure over time, particularly if it may be subject to vibration. Apologies if I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs!

Exactly right, and as I have done :getmecoat:

But having said that, if you get your weld setting correct you can slightly melt the two surfaces being jointed into the weld pool and achieve a nice weld

When I was taught to weld at college we always did one on both sides, but that was usually quarter inch plate so easy to do. With a good chamfer on one side you should have no issues but when you watch a V8 the rubber engine mount will move when reved and then it will rock the car. I have seen a few mounts break over the years.
