Essential travel

I want to take my car to the rollers next week but is it essential travel, what do you guys think ,swimbo says I should change my name to Richard head, don't know what she's on about.

If the business is open and you have an appointment should be ok.

It could be essential tuning work to pass an mot...

 

Equally it could be viewed as essential maintenance to keep a vehicle safe on the road, and for pedestrians/other road users.

Both of which are examples of the type of huge holes we can all find in the current lockdown guidelines which renders them pretty much useless. It comes down to personal responsibility and conscience along with what the risk is of getting stopped and having a FPN issued.

 

To me, this trip would clearly in breach of the guidelines which say ESSENTIAL travel only, so shopping, visiting to receive or render support (medical or otherwise) to someone in your bubble, and to go to work. I'm betting if you found yourself in front of a Magistrate challenging the FPN received should you get stopped, you'd be on the receiving end of a bigger fine plus costs.

 

My question is, this really can't wait for two weeks? Really?

But don't you just carry a bag of messages plus a packet of paracetamol in the passenger footwell in case stopped as then your are on an essential journey to assist another--best have an address in mind near your route.

 

Seriously though, Blatters could well have a point re. FPN and last sentence (no pun intended) is worth considering.

How far is the journey?

And this is why so many of the businesses that fall through the cracks of government support are going to the wall. 

 

If the business is allowed to be open as its been deemed essential that's good enough for me providing your not driving hundreds of miles to get there. Take every precaution you can, use ppe and keep your distance as no doubt the tuner will have procedures for. 

 

I know my views differ from a lot on here but just my opinion. The world has to keep turning whilst taking as much care as possible.

What has distance got to do with anything? 10 miles or 200, if you're in the car there is no risk to anyone outside the car... and even during the first lockdown there was no law restricting distance travelled, it was guidance.

It's a difficult call! If you break down or are involved in a RTA regardless of fault, you're then putting others at risk and you're pulling on already stretched services etc. 

 

It's not for us on here to preach or judge. Let people make their own choices and they've got to live with the consequences, unless it's a eye test a Barnard Castle!

It was guidance that led to fines being issued as in the case of the couple up a Scottish Munro I recently quoted. Police regarded their behaviour as reckless which I'm guessing related to needing rescue and possible risk of covid transmission.

 

The 'no risk in the car' theory might run out of steam if there was an accident or breakdown.

Also the 200 mile run might not fit in to the 'food delivery message'.

And had that been me issued with a ticket I would have challenged it. It all depends on what the offence code is/was. If it was a Covid-19 specific offence code then we know from previous discussions that the legislation did not seem to support the guidelines with regards to actual enforcement. If it was a "generic" offence code then that may be more difficult to challenge.

How far is the journey?


It shouldn’t be about FPNs, it’s about unknowingly passing on the virus. So, take responsibility for public health, do the right thing and set a good example.
