Turbo_Jimmy Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 (edited) Hi folks, I’m new to the forum, I’ve always been a fan of Westfields ever since I was little and one of my friends dads built a 2.0 pinto with a yellow body. Im looking to take my first steps into owning a Westfield. I’m on the look out for a Westfield Wide body built from a Mazda SDV. Preferably one that has already been registered. I don’t mind if it’s a bit of a fixer upper but not sure I’m ready to build a full kit. Hopefully I can get one in the near future, but current circumstances virus make things a little challenging. Thanks Jimmy Edited April 27, 2020 by Turbo_Jimmy Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 Welcome Jimmy, yeah, it's a good way to buy; building one from a kit is something to do because you've always, really, really wanted to build one! It's not the quickest/cheapest/easiest way into ownership, that's for sure!! Quote

Turbo_Jimmy Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 @shrops-paul I have thought about the Zetec, Duratec options. But my thinking is if I go down the Mazda route, then there’s always the option of adding a turbo over time, if and when I get used to the standard power. Quote
Rob Hunter - Club Secretary Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Welcome! You should try to keep your options open on engine, age etc, I quickly learned that each Westfield is very different from the next when I was looking. My first Westfield was a well used 96 SEIW with a 165hp 2.0 Zetec and I loved it. Sometimes an older car is better as it will have all the quirks and any reliability issues sorted. My current Mega S2000 only had 800 miles on it when I bought it in February. I'm still working my way through a few minor niggles (fuel leaks, coolant leaks etc) as I'm effectively doing the shakedown mileage on the build! Get yourself to one of the meets when lockdown is over, there are loads of beautiful cars out there to give you ideas. More than happy to give you a ride in mine when we're not grounded 😁 As for turbocharging the Mazda engine, you can do the same on the Zetec (or supercharge). A Duratec is good for 200-210 bhp on standard internals too Quote
shrops-paul Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 Its definitely worth waiting to get along to a local meet and look at members cars. As with everything it depends on your budget and what the car will be used for. I also wanted something I could tinker with myself with my basic level of mechanical skill. So far (touch wood) with the exception of the carbs (which is a dark art) I’ve been able to most things myself. The national kit car show would have been good to get to too but alas that’s been cancelled due to the current shenanigans. Quote
Turbo_Jimmy Posted April 28, 2020 Author Posted April 28, 2020 Thanks for the info guys, I’ll keep my options open and hopefully when the restrictions are lifted I can get along to a few meets👍 1 Quote
