corsechris Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 I’m acutely aware of the central hypocrisy of my view on this, I’m retired. Doesn’t mean I have to like it! Quote
Alan France Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 I guess the point of being retired is that we don’t have to worry about a job but do have to worry about pension funds, assets and family prospects. Being a little older means we remember a bit more history. Like Labour running out of money in the late 70s and the conditions placed on us by the IMF and the winter of discontent. That JC Labour leader was not as left wing as this JC, and didn’t spend as much as this JC wants to. 1 Quote

I don't think some of his supporters truely understand just how quickly and how bad things will get if JC gets into power. It's why in the past apart from Blair no labour party has won a 2nd term in modern times. 2 Quote
Alan France Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 Still it’s nearly over. Leaving for a final leaders rally later, disappointing that the invitation has to say please don’t publish anything on social media to try and avoid protest groups and abuse at the entrance. So it’s a secret venue, secret time, secret party, secret leader and I’m not confirming that it is in fact today. ... and I’ll take several underground trains in case I’m being followed. 1 1 Quote

Same today on Daily Politics BBC2 noon when journo Laura K advised she was going to a Corbyn rally but couldn't (or didn't) disclose the location. What has happened to UK politics when rallies seemingly have to be more secret than KKK? Quote
Nick Algar - Competition Secretary Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 I'm just dismayed by the Politics of today. It seems to have been taken over by the Mob and reasoned debate and argument has been thrown out. Some of the stunts that have been pulled in this election have been deplorable. False news and scare mongering on social media have been rife. It's like this story, the boy didn't in fact have to sleep on the floor but had a 13hr wait for a bed to become available due to demand. It looks like he chose to be on the floor. I've taken to look at this Fact Checker site now to cut through things. https://fullfact.org/online/LGI-photo-boy-facebook/ 3 Quote

I've taken to look at this Fact Checker site now to cut through things. https://fullfact.org/online/LGI-photo-boy-facebook/ https://fullfact.org/online/LGI-photo-boy-facebook/ Quote from fact check 6th paragraph---"Sarah Williment told the publication that her son, Jack, had been taken to hospital on December 3rd with suspected pneumonia. Jack was moved from a bed due to an emergency arrival and put in a room without a bed. Jack, wanting to sleep, had to use the floor. He stayed overnight, but according to Mrs Williment, it took him 13 hours after arrival to be given a bed on a ward". Quote from fact check paras 7 to 9--- "Dr Yvette Oade, the Chief Medical Officer of the hospital’s NHS trust, apologising for what happened and confirming key aspects of the story". That statement says, in part: “Within four hours a decision was made to admit Jack to our Children’s Assessment and Treatment (CAT) Unit for further monitoring overnight. Unfortunately, the unit was also experiencing exceptionally high levels of demand which meant that Jack was required to wait in the clinical treatment room in the Paediatric Emergency Department until a bed became available. Jack was admitted to the CAT Unit later that evening and was discharged home the following morning after a medical review". “We are extremely sorry that there were only chairs available in the treatment room, and no bed. This falls below our usual high standards, and for this we would like to sincerely apologise to Jack and his family.” Quote from fact check para 11--- "While we are not in a position to verify whether the woman’s (Facebook) account was hacked, the fact that there is no additional evidence provided, that she has denied knowledge of the situation to the media, and that the hospital has confirmed key aspects of the incident suggest that this (Facebook posted) claim is not trustworthy". Reading the fact check makes it clear that only chairs were available for the lad in the treatment room. Only after 4 hours could he lay on a trolley when one became available. When there are respiratory problems the blood oxygenation goes down and the heart pumps faster to compensate and keep vital organs oxygenated. With the heart working harder the patient will typically want to lay down as then the heart isn't working against gravity. So bed rest is best, but if unavailable rest on a trolley or third option lay on the floor. 1 Quote
Alan France Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Secret revealed, Copper Box Arena in the Olympic Park. General feeling was it’s going down to the wire. Good luck UK PLC. Let’s hope there are no legal challenges to the results, whoever wins, wins. If the people have voted for JC we can all deal with it somehow. Now where is my passport. Quote
DonPeffers Posted December 12, 2019 Author Posted December 12, 2019 On the passport front Alan I've renewed mine and it states on the front UK; so no longer EU passport. Whoever gets into No. 10 the SNP will want another Indy referendum so more turmoil and debate ahead I reckon. Quote

My EU passport still has plenty of life left in it, enough to last out one bad government term, just hope I don't have to use it to stay away ☹️ But if Boris gets a clear majority, Queen Nicola, assuming she still is after the vote, will be told to wait for the 10 years originally agreed. I genuinely dont get why the government dont just let her do it. Save themselves billions heading up north. The snp are deluded if they think they can make the budget deficit work well enough for the country, let alone even have a sniff of EU membership. I also found the SNP candidate (and his lackys) for my area incredibly arrogant so I hope that one of the other candidates has done well enough to put a dent in his figures. Quote

Blatman Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Exit polls suggest a big win for the Tories. Sky News coverage is terrible, the Beebs is only slightly better and Andrew Neill is already annoying me... Was it a Brexit Election (as suggested by Sky's programme banner)? If it was then Labour and the Lib-Dems badly mis-judged the feeling of the country on Brexit. If the margin is as predicted then Brexit is unequivocally the will of the people IF we believe this is a Brexit Election. If it wasn't about Brexit then I think Corbyn's spending plans were seen through by large numbers of the population and for the reasons mentioned above. His spending and nationalisation plans were just bonkers. I'm sure his neutral stance on Brexit didn't help and whilst the Lib-Dems are predicted to pick up one seat Swinsons arguments have been proved to be largely irrelevant, as are the Lib-Dems. 1 Quote
