He's a footballers for **** sake...

Trying to sit down with my lunch and catch the news.

Right now the two main news channels Sky and BBC News are both showing some interview with some over paid poser (previously used word had a different meaning to what I thought) about some world record transfer...

This is what makes me angry, millions spent on a single person when it could do so much good else where.

Chuffing idiots...

The wages/salary is obscene.

If he dropped a £2 coin whilst walking along it would not be worth his time picking it up!!!!

Frankly I'm not sure what annoys me more, the obscene money or that it is deemed news worthy enough to block out the main news channels

I totally get that football is a massive hobby for some, but surely they have their own dedicated sports channels / web pages to consume this via.

Sure drop a small update into the sports bulletin but not the main segment....

Feeling grumpy today....

I commented to my Good Lady during the BBC lunchtime news that there was a sport section at the end for this item. She said this isn't sport, it's NEWS! Sarcasm is one of her stronger traits. :o

It is the silly season - nothing else to report apparently...

To be fair, if he was a nonce, that would be big news.

Edited the original post - I didn't think it meant that - apologies...

Agreed though, its a ludicrous amount of money.

I was listening to a program on Radio 4 - in America they have a cap on what the big sports stars can get paid - it works because their big sports, i.e baseball, basketball and American Football aren't played to anywhere near the same extent overseas.

If we tried a cap on footballers pay in the UK, they'd just all move abroad....

Despite salary caps in the USA. There are loads of sportsmen earning $25m a year plus sponsorship deals.

This is what happens when a rich country owns a football club and want to make a statement about the current sanctions. Hopefully financial fair play will end up sanctioning them.

I have been a massive football fan since a boy. Played from age 8 up to 21 and fives for 10 further years. I now genuinely struggle to get enthusiastic about it. The obscene amounts of money, the primadonas that are footballers, diving, all the lack of respect to officials have all contributed to the sports downfall now. I much prefer the rugby and cricket now.

Whenever I hear about these sort of things I can't help but think of all those doctors and nurses struggling day in day out due to a shortage of money in the NHS, having to decide who can and who can't have life saving treatments due to the cost...

I wonder how much it costs to insure his legs?

I met a bloke once (in the alarm business as a matter fact) who reckoned debtor's arms were worth £500 and legs £1000 so if they didn't pay him, his operators would pay a visit with a suitable club. Footballers had better pay their bills it seems!

Hmmm... As with anything, it/he is worth what the market will pay. We all want to get paid what we're worth. I expect quite a lot of want to get paid more than we're worth. But football is a job and he has a talent that the market determines has a high value.

Maybe the question is, are there any highly remunerated individuals that wouldn't get a similar reaction? Fat cat CEO's? Politicians? Bankers? Journalists and photographers? Property magnates? Or any other magnate? Branson? Gates? (the late) Jobs? Buffett? Zuckerberg? Does anyone think they're worth it? The footballer isn't in the same league (sorry) as these guys.

So today's ire is pointed at a footballer. It'll be someone else when the next slow news day happens. By all means raise an eyebrow but after that, move on.

Splitting hairs here but that's was this corner of the forum is for, 'market value' and 'worth' are not the same thing.

Problem is, 'worth' is very subjective to every individual.

I do agree that 'market value' is what the market will bear - however sport and entertainment IMHO are artificially inflated in terms of market value and are supported by preposterous levels of debt

If the Footy man is worth paying so much for,  then whoever pays the wages must be sure his investment will earn  more for the club in advertising revenue , shirts sales sponsership , public appearances etc etc etc .

Football  used to be a sport for the working man ???
