Garage DIY help needed

I would have liked a sectional door to replace an up-and-over, but didn't want to keep room for the tracks. I went for an insulated roller with a box, and still find it a massive improvement in terms of sealing, since the top slat pushes out flat when the door fully closed. Maybe I got lucky?

Mine does that too provided the limit switches are correctly set. The greatest draught is at the ends of the safety edge as it is slightly short of the opening width. Still too small for a small rodent to get in through though.

Be careful comparing costs of garage doors. You really do get what you pay for.  Check if replacement slats are available . They bend very easily on the cheaper doors and then the door wont go up. The electronic controllers also tend to die as do the tuve motors. If they are fitted with cheap chinese motors, if the motor dies you will be buying a new door.    Best roller doors are made by SWS -  Somfy motors used and third party controllers designed in the uk, replacable slats , long warranty on finish etc..

I have no vested interest in SWS ot tgdc as i no longer install, just my experience of giving customers who bought cheap doors bad news when their incumbent supplier couldn't/ wouldnt repair shortly after the warranty ran out !,

As for flooring, I bought these to fit.

And I got the heavy duty in grey with the button finish.

They lock together really well and are virtually indestructible in fact the reason I haven't finished the installation is I'm trying to find somewhere local with a sheet metal guillotine to cut the edge tiles to size.

I'd recommend taking a look, especially as they do different colours and can add logos so you can go really fancy with the look. I went for plain dark grey,  the closest I could find to oil drip colour...

Went to have a look at my neighbours roller shutter doors, after advice here from Neptune and there is a brush on the roller at the top , but the door is 3 inches away from it !! Pretty pointless. I know my neighbour bought cheap and it doesnt have brushes on the sides and rattles !! That would drive me insane clattering in the wind. The shutter sections are really thin and wouldnt take much to push them in or damage. Seal on the bottom of the door was a bit meh. Not that impressed with that . Wife says , if we are buying Rollerdor, which  are £400 more each than Dave the neighbour paid for his, are we going to get a better quality product ? She knows a ex neighbour who she sees walking the dogs and I see he has just had a roller fitted, so may investigate his install and quality. A mate has a sectional door, so will ask him what he thinks and where he got his from.

For now, I will carry on painting out the garage. Ceiling done and half the walls, which isnt as easy as it sounds, by the time you dismantle and paint and re-build back up. Still weathers rotten, so I am not missing much outside !

Nice one Thrusty... When you get your sample, use it to try to figure out how you will cut the flipping things. And when you figure it out, please tell me...

I want to get a fairly neat cut so I can get the edge close the the shed walls. I could have a ragged edge and cover it with a thick bead, but my OCD is kicking in.

And I did wonder how long it would be before the Gulf colours got a mention...

I have similar hard plastic tiles- I cut them neatly with a coarse jigsaw blade on low speed so it doesn't melt

Now I never thought of a rough but slow cut. My last attempt was with a very high speed Dremel and I got that horrible melted burr.

I'll try this in the next few days, you might just be a hero...

Saying that about melting, we have a Heath Robinson polystyrene heater wire at work for melting the stuff, may even work for the tiles.

What's wrong with up 'n over doors chaps? I have 2 to replace and it just seems a simple fix to put the new ones onto the timber frame. Are the sectional or roller doors more secure, better insulated or what?

Looking forward to your replies.

Nothing wrong with up and over doors. Still the best value for money, more style and material choices, the most popular doors by far. Can be much more secure than rollers if 4 point locking is specified . The ventilation afforded means cars dry out. However even with optional insulation that some manufacturers sell, they offer very little heat retention, and debris can still blow under.

Been looking still at doors and have now moved onto sectional doors. I have a local company coming out to survey on Thursday . Not sure if I need the 40mm thick doors or the 20mm ones. Personally , anything will be better than the old ones. We 'may' have an issue of the extension and garages fuse box 'might' be in the way of the runner for the door. Its close !! , so will let them measure and confirm if its doable.

Still not progress on the flooring. I have some samples of plastic flooring and thats out. It shows scratches really easily and in no time will look tatty and so I will probably go rubber .
