@dombanks  You're right it shouldn't need blocking. However, I drove 23 miles and it wasn't up to temperature. I know the blocking isn't ideal but it's working for now. I figure it's better than driving around with the temps below 60. I need to do the 'zetec cooling mod'.

A huge 'thank you' to @bigals kindly who took the time to meet up with me and explain the cooling mods I need to do. It's just a case of sourcing the bits I need and finding someone to bolt it up for me.

I take it you don't have the cooling system quite right then.. what bits do you need?

It seems I have a thermostat bypass pipe which goes into the top big  pipe. I'm told it needs to be re-routed to the lower big pipe and change the thermostat for the fan. I have the lower pipe replacement with 2 16mm pipes off it but I'll still need 16mm hose, some clips and joints and something to block off the junction of the top pipe and the spare pipe on the lower big pipe.

If you can work that out, you're a better man than me. I wouldn't have grasped what needed doing without meeting up with @Bigals . I read all the threads on the subject and just ended up  confused. Having someone looking at the engine bay and pointing out all the relevant components to me was invaluable and it sort of makes sense now!

That makes sense. Sort of what I expected you to say Might be worth replacing various sections. Such as the the top hose. A 90 degree bend, bit of shiny pipe, and little straight bit is all that's needed for that section. from auto silicon hoses (ash) it's not a huge amount and saves you having to figure out bungs etc.

I'd rather replace whole sections, if possible. It'll look a mess with blocked off pipes all over the place. There's already a bung in the heater pipe as it has no heater. That would make three blocked off pipes. The existing top pipe is shiny metal with a joint welded into it but it also has the fan thermostat switch fixed to it as well.

I'll check out ASH - I'd read some threads where they were mentioned but I thought I was a guy called Ash. Thanks for the pointer!

There is lol. Auto silicon hoses has a decent eBay site.

Do you have a polo rad? (Inlet/outlet is on left of car?)

I did mine with most components from there. I may even have a few bits spare which your welcome to as I bought all sorts. So before you do pop over for a rummage

@sycho Thanks for that

@dombanks Thanks for the offer.  I don' think it's a Polo rad - as I remember the outlet is on the right as you look at it from the drivers seat. I've booked it in to Toybox for them to sort it out and it's going in tomorrow.

Now for the excuses!

I'd like to get on it myself but my health gets in the way. I had some fairly radical surgery which involved taking most of my right pectoral muscle to rebuild my throat following cancer. The procedure is called a Pectoral Major Flap - you can watch a similar op on Youtube but I wouldn't recommend it! This has left my right side with limited strength and movement and the after-effects of radiotherapy and chemo left me with extreme fatigue. I'm knackered after an hours activity.

I enjoy getting to know my car and understanding how it works but I'll be leaving the mechanics to the professionals.

I wouldn't blame toybox for this, its the way it was done it for ages. eek that sounds harsh. im sure they can fix it but for some of the smaller things i'm sure there are enough of us about to help if you need it.

Don't get me wrong. I don't blame Toybox at all. I've just asked for their help.

I've seen this is an issue on older cars and I believe Westfield modified later cars/kits to rectify the problem.

I bought the car from Toybox because they are local and I knew I would get the support I needed to run a Westfield- me being useless with mechanicals and all that.

I'm sure there will be other smaller things club members could help with in the future. I have already witnessed the goodwill that exists within the WSCC and it's members. You all seem a very decent bunch!

Thanks.  I take it you mean the main thermostat? @bigals also advised me to change the fan thermostat as my fan kicked in at 80c. He reckoned I should get one that opens at 100c.

Yes, he means the main thermostat.

I agree, I misread that ASH hoses discount code everytime I see it :d

You'll find lots of willing assistance if you do want to tackle jobs "yourself"*, but don't feel that you have to! There are plenty of small specialists dotted all around the country these days, for those jobs that you don't want to undertake. More importantly, there's no stigma attached to using them either. Times have changed now, many of us have far less time for doing jobs on the cars than we used to, and when you just want to go for a drive, there's nothing worse than having a list of car chores that must be completed first.

*Note, this assistance can range from you carrying out the job with someone casting an experienced eye over your shoulder and offering hints and tips, to at the other end of the scale, you seeing your car hidden under a group of local members, while you permanently bring in cups of tea and bacon butties! It's whatever works for you...

^^^^^

Thanks Dave. I sometimes feel like I 'ought' to do it myself and put myself on a minor guilt trip if I don't. The truth is I don't like doing mechanics, I'm no good at it and since my op my right arm doesn't work fully. I just like the driving.

I have delivered the car to Toybox this afternoon and their mechanic, Dale, is going to fix it. He was aware of the over-cooling problem and how to sort it out. I hope I can get it back by the weekend.

I can understand how that discount code can be mis-read!

If you can get your car back for Saturday morning why don't you join us for a run up to GBS Sportscars for their coffee morning. We will be coming your way through Wymeswold to pick up the A46 heading towards Bingham and East Bridgford, then on the A6097 towards Ollerton. That should give it a good work out to check all is well!

Good shout. I saw the thread about the trip to  and would have liked to have gone. Even if I have the car back, it's my dear old mums birthday and we're having a family get-together down in Watford.

I hope you all have a good run and the weather is kind.
