15 cars met at Whitworth Terrace Cafe and it was great to see so many faces that we haven't seen for a while, and lovely to see our regulars too of course. We had a good chat on the terrace. Very difficult to photograph so many cars with stupid lamp posts in the way but here we are in the Whitworth car park We had a special visitor with us today (thanks Lee B), here is Natalia (and Froggy hiding behind her back) with her car, a wonderful young lady full of enthusiasm, she loves cars and going to car shows with her friend Bobby, thanks to her dad for filming us as we left x Allan bought his Westfield out that has been refurbished to exacting standards and now contains a 2.3 Duratec engine. It was an absolute stunner and he was deservedly proud to show it to us all, WOW. We set off on our run out, straight through Bakewell which had EMPTY roads! then off onto the quiet lanes and up high for great views, this took us to The Cow Shed. Those that had not followed my directions were already there waiting for us, hey ho, Wormhill will be there for another day. The roast beef and Yorkshire puddings were eaten al fresco We needed sweet treats next so we dropped down to the Yondermann The Rocky Road was popular @aeg missed out, just sayin' Belgian Chocolate, plus it contained Crunchie pieces, oh my Don't worry Glen, there are no fingerprints on that roll over bar, I am better trained than that Thank you to everyone for coming today, it's been just fabulous to see you all. The roads were quiet, the sun was warm and the cars ran well. For those that are not at Silverstone next weekend, it is a Bank Holiday and we will be out avoiding the tourist hot spots, see you then!5 points

I've just been reading this thread with much interest as I finally got round to doing the full geometry set up on my car today, which revealed the weight, something I had always wondered. Went to see our local expert just round the corner from Castle Combe where I'll be testing out the new set up tomorrow. Really pleased with the new set up, just on the drive home it felt vastly improved. So it weighed in at 650kg, which is pretty much where I was expecting, bearing in mind I've got everything - full cage, carpets, heater and all the creature comforts etc. I worked out that I'm at 285bhp/tonne which makes me smile. Will probably look at weight saving ideas in the future but I need to start with the driver first to make it worthwhile π4 points

If you haven't already seen it, this is an interesting watch from Turn7 (similar to Toybox but for Caterhams).3 points

That's nothing. I've replaced bone with Titanium plates and screws, though that's maybe a bit hard-core for some.2 points

My factory 2005 Sigma engined car comes in at 549.5kg, within a kg it's corner weighted across the axles with 49:51% front:rear weight distribution. That's with 1/4 tank of fuel (gauge indicated, so most likely a random volume), factory wheels, sport seats and carpet. Gary2 points

Oh yeah, I've also replaced the large and heavy fire extinguisher with a Fire Safety Stick, that's saved me 3.4kgs. It's all adding up @Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO2 points

Lightweight Jack Webb Motorsport LiFePo4 battery about to go in, then after that either grp or carbon seats to replace the sport turbo ones I currently have. I reckon that's going to save me at least 20kgs? Possibly a bit more. After that I need to get it properly weighed as I'm not entirely sure what it currently is. I had it on the local council weighbridge which only did one axle at a time. With a full tank of fuel it said it was 670kgs. I assumed it was correct but now am not so sure. I weighed the car myself using a 200kgs scale and equal thickness blocks of wood, one corner at a time. It came in at 644.7kgs. I suspect it may be somewhere between the two so need to get it on some proper scales. Also it would tell me how well I did with my in-garage bathroom scales weighing attempt. That way I'll know if it's worth doing in future with any mates cars. After the seats and battery I'm not sure how much further I will go. My front wings need replacing at some point so no doubt will go carbon but after that I doubt I'll do any more lightening. I'd rather spend money on driver training tbh as the car has more ability than I can handle atm. Some track day driving lessons would be of more benefit than more carbon for me I think.2 points

We have our annual weigh-in at our next Essex meet (8th Sept), so be interesting to see what ours weigh this time around, some including mine have changed quite a bit.2 points

They cheat slightly and use the dry weight (no fluids!), which isn't too realistic! You're welcome to correct any mislabled Caterham products with a sticker should you see any. Public service etc. What's the plan?2 points

Nope, just a deeply suspicious mind and an overdeveloped sense for finding mischief.2 points

Quite an eventful outing today. 4 of us met up at the Buffers and left dead on time to meet up with the others at the Riverside. Deciding to take the direct route along the A64 instead of the more scenic one, all was well until we hit the duel carriage way and my temperature gauge was heading towards 100Β°. Carrying on and it was soon off the scale so I thought I'd better stop and have a look. Taking the bonnet off, I could see there was no radiator cap on. I'd checked the levels before leaving home and forgotten to replace it. Luckily it had fallen onto the plug leads and stopped there. Topping up with a litre of water I had got us under way for around 10 miles, then I had to stop again. More water added from the washer bottle and we were off again arriving at the Riverside about 20 minutes late. Next problem, the pub was shut. A quick Google found an open pub 5 minutes away. All starving by now so Full English all round. After a fill up of food and, more importantly, water, we set off for Helmsley. Nice roads with no traffic, I'd set my satnav for our destination in Scarborough, actively ignoring it until I turned right towards Malton instead of left to Helmsley. Not realising at first, I just carried on. Hitting Malton, we managed to get split up in traffic and traffic lights and 8 cars became 4, with the other 4 splitting up into pairs. The 4, me, @Breakable?, @Nicholas Rycroft, @Dylan managed to spin round and join up with @Jill sutcliffe and @MGG along the A64 that I was trying to avoid! So we carried on to our final destination of "Olivers on the Mount" which surprisingly is a cafe on Olivers Mount in with spectacular views of Scarborough. We had to go the long way round as a hill climb was taking place, but as we arrived in the car park @Marcus Barlow - Show and Events Co-ordinator and @Gareth D (GAZ 4885) got there at the same time. @ColinH made it in time for tea and cakes. Heading home is easier, we all know where we live, or should do, so we took the scenic route from Bridlington to Stamford Bridge and the A64 again. Thanks to all who came and sorry for the delays and changing routes.2 points

Hard to compare costs to anyone else as they donβt live in your house and have the exact same car etc. But my 2L Zetec, 2016 value of 16K cost me about Β£150 with my wife also named on the policy. Full no claims and Fully comp. If you need to drop the premium a little try dropping the annual mileage.1 point

Nick, you have Andrew Steel in two rows, one with four events and one with two, think he might want them all on the same line.1 point

I suppose my turning in opinion is relative to us as a family comparison. The crossflow car was set up to the Westfield-world.com geometry data, and drove well. However, 115bhp for the heavier crossflow compared with 142bhp (by Troy at NMS) for the sigma and lighter weight, just made our sigma much more responsive than our crossflow. Interestingly the Westfield sigma weight compares well with sigma Caterham weights given in the chart earlier in this thread. Gary1 point

was a good day , thank you next time ill get in my car earlier so we can follow julie , as rob hunters mystery tours of derbyshire are not very good lol1 point

Hi Stuart Other than a lot heavier no idea. What I can tell you is that as well as the sigma car we had a family 1700cc crossflow westfield, the handling was chalk and cheese. The sigma light and nippy the weighty crossflow didn't like like turning in! Gary1 point

The sigma engine is a good 20kg lighter than a zetec, so itβs a great choice for weight saving π1 point

So a 420R actually has a power to weight of about 363bhp/tonne. No wonder they are slow π (kidding) We all know Caterham have 'allowed' people to think the car's name/designation ie 420 is the power to weight. Nice sales ploy I'll give them that. I'm hoping to get mine down to around the same figure as yours @Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO1 point

I've just renewed with Howdens. Really helpful call with Richard Spencer. It's good to speak with an insurer who understands cars, rather than just someone in a call centre. Inclusive of 5 track days, the price came down from last year too!!1 point

That's excellent for that spec car. I have same but turbocharged, I reckon mine is a lot more than 554kgs!1 point

My first run out since last September π and what a great run it was πa measly 116 miles for me, but considering my car was driven 5 miles for an mot and not been touched since last year it did everything I expected, thanks Julie and Glen for bringing us all together, hopefully see you all next weekend π1 point

I was overtaking and heard a small bang from the underside. Then there was misting on the inside of the windscreen and rear view mirror (which was oil). I walked back to see what it was, but couldn't see anything. I quickly slowed, stopping when safe, but it will have been about half a mile from where the bang was. The oil light came on just as I was stopping, but I don't recall if the engine stalled or if I turned it off. It was all very quick. Not really sure what to do next. I'll ask for advice in tech talk.0 points

The picture nobody wants to take.... But then I'm sure there is not meant to be a hole there. I waited almost four hours for the RAC, but time flew due to the number of people who pulled over to check I was OK. The RAC chap was also very helpful once he arrived. I think I need to now splash out on a new raceline sump. I stopped no more than half a mile after it happened, most of which was coasting, so I'm hopeful that there is no engine damage.0 points
