  1. After The Long Way North 2 trip we will wake up on Monday morning in Berwick with a need to travel South back home. Some people have other plans and work commitments but if you are looking for a route back then you are welcome to join us for part or all of the way. Our plan is to leave Berwick on Tweed and travel South on the A1 to Holy Island, the tide will be out and the crossing safe. It is a half hour journey in total. We will park in the large public car park, take the short walk to view the Castle/Priory and up the tower to the viewing point, not stopping for long. Back on the A1 South for another half hour journey to Bamburgh where we will have a quick photo of the castle. It is important to leave the A1 at the brown sign for 'Budle, Waren Mill and Northumberland Coast Road' so we can drive round Budle Bay to get to Bamburgh. We will take the Coast Road as far as Low Newton by the Sea where we will turn right signed 'Denwick A1'. There is an important small turning Left just before the railway line and the Blink Bonny pub. Taking this route means we can drive the bridged road over the A1 instead of having to cross it. That's the last of the detailed route, now head for Alnwick and then the magnificant road over to Rothbury. I am on unchartered territory from here, so I think we will take the B6341 to Rothbury (SHELL GARAGE, FUEL, TOILETS, THROPTON) then Otterburn. Right onto the A696 and left to Otterburn Mill to take a left onto the A68 Corbridge. Left and right over the A69 to continue on the A68 Darlington (divert for 2 miles on A692 to Consett TESCO, FUEL, TOILETS) to drop us on the A1 South. On the A1 South (WETHERBY SERVICES, FUEL, TOILETS) then M1 South to Junction 36 which drops us on The Strines road (Mortimer Road) and Ladybower for the last leg on familiar ground in the Peak District. I am not sure if this is the best way and I know some but not all of it, the direct route is 200 miles for us so I am not going for the absolute best roads, just an improvement on the A1 for 4 hours.

  3. Some 5mm spacers for me. My 13โ€ rims were just catching on the suspension arm so these give it a bit of space without pushing the tyre out too far.

  4. Well, it was bound to happen one day... Whist packing up a returns box to CBS, I made a great job of packing and used the last of the gaffer tape on the box. Only to realise I had left the free postage sticker inside the box !!!!!!!!!. Wasn't that cheap after all to send this back, need to buy another roll of gaffer now

  6. Route planning in progress. Meeting at the Motorist, Lennerton Lane, Sherburn in Elmet, LS25 6JE at 2pm, heading off at 2:30. Taking the B1222 towards York, then the A64 for a short while. A1237, ring road, to the A19 to Thirsk. A168 to Northallerton, then A167. It gets tricky here! B1263 to Catterick, but turning off on to some unmarked roads towards Moulton, Middleton Tyas and Scotch Corner. It's about 70 miles and should take 2-2 half hours.

  8. I bumped into Nigel Trilk on Sunday and we had a brief chat about the Tipo 184. Apparently, Westfield have partnered with Ant Anstead (Dowsett Classic Car Company) to help with bringing the car to market (build support, parts supply etc). Since the one Ant originally built, there has been some development work on the car such as strengthening and lengthening the chassis. Nigel reckons that it's a real hoot to drive (very like the 50's race car it mimics), will be able to be IVA'd and will weigh around 700kg.

  9. Here is me old mans locost build. We started this when me and my brother were still in school and were being allowed to use the school workshops after school for projects. After finishing an off road go kart, we were on the hunt for another project. When in halfords, nestled in with the Haynes manuals, I found Ron Champion's book, build your own sports car for ยฃ250. I begged my old man to buy it and we took it to the school the next day. The head of design technology gave the green light to build the chassis in the workshop and that was it, we were off. A sierra 2.0L DOHC was bought at auction for ยฃ175 and being the book was based on a ford escort mk1 or 2, a real engineering challenge started. The chassis is all stainless steel box section and every single component we could hand craft, was. All suspension bushes hand machined. Suspension arms all stainless steel and the geometry is all of our own design. The plastics were bought as seconds from MK sportscars, back when it was MK and his dad working out of their shed and a small unit. We did the fluted sides back before seeing anyone else doing them. Leaving school and loosing the workshop. The car got put into storage for many years and my old man often thinking of selling. Me and my brother wouldn't let it go and it stayed stored until I bought my 1st house purely because it had a large garage. Finally in 2012, we got the car finished and through her IVA. The cars been cherished and used every summer since. With me getting the S2000 and us seeing how much better the LED lights are. She's still getting upgrades even now.

  11. With retirement and a change in priorities (currently converting a Mercedes Sprinter into a camper) so time has come to sell my beloved Westfield. Built by myself (qualified engineer), first registered on age related plates in 2006 with the ultimate plate F1WSC currently assigned meaning no need to be concerned about emissions come MOT time. I kept the specification pretty much as first built until lockdown happened and in need of a new challenge and project I decided to focus on the Westfield and carry out a major transformation as detailed below which cost almost ยฃ7k nett after selling removed parts. Focus was on transforming the handling by fitting Siltech Racing suspension all round after meeting with Dennis and Andy and seeing the brilliant parts they have designed and manufactured, simply the best out there. Specifcation: 2.0 Zetec on 45mm Jenvey throttle bodies, Emerald M3DK ECU and custom mapped by Dave Walker at Emerald achieving 165hp Engine is correctly registered with DVLA as NON cat with the obvious benefits this brings Dunnel Racing reduced height baffled sump MT75 box Reconditioned 3.61 LSD Siltech superwide front suspension using aircraft specification T45 steel Siltech billet aluminium front hubs Siltech drilled front discs Siltech branded 4 pot Willwood callipers Black Hawk ceramic front pads Siltech front ARB Siltech micro adjustable rear suspension Protech shocks Rear uprights replaced with new Westfield parts including bearings VW Golf rear callipers, new discs and Brembo pads New driveshafts and CV joints (4) New quick rack with Superpro silicon mounts Full suspension set up including corner weighting by Northampton Motorsport Compomotive CXR 7J ET30 graphite grey Toyo R888R 205/60/13 Factory spec ZK bodywork V8 bonnet with black powder coated grills Carbon NV aero+ cycle wings Carbon NV rear arch protectors Standard width rear arches treated with Wunderseal. Would love to know who you use for maintenance for when I don't have time, and, ahem, kit car friendly MOT's? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Also, any local meet ups happening over the summer??

  26. Such sad news about Matt, although it has been on the cards for a while. Ivan and Matt serviced and MOT'd my car for over 30 years, and were fantastic mechanics -- nothing was too much trouble. When I bought a 3-year-old Astra in 1998, Ivan road tested it for me -- and they kept it running for the next 18 years, once tracking down a hard-to-get part in a local scrap yard. Although I had no connection with the racing side of things, it was always fascinating to see the latest kit car being built out in the workshop. Matt's first stroke was a real shock in someone so young, and it must have been so frustrating that they couldn't seem to be able to prevent further ones from happening, even with medication. I last saw him about a month ago, and we had a long chat about various things, but it was clear that his health was deteriorating. You will be missed, Matt.

  29. It really is sad news . I saw matt about a month ago when I went to collect something from him and even though he wasn't really up to having visitors he said come around Ash i will sort you out and we had a really good chat and in true matt fashion he'd got some stories and we had a good laugh I was only popping in for 5 minutes and an hour and a half later I was still there . I think Matt and his dad Ivan were Genuine nice people and they had a great understanding of seven style cars Rest easy Matt another one gone far to early but atleast your suffering is over now ๐Ÿ

  30. I've owned 4 kits, all pretty much same day impulse purchases. Only regretted one, the Cossie Fisher Fury. I knew it wasn't great when I bought it but I'm a man of my word so paid up. Loved all the other 3, but at one point owned 3 of the 4 all at the same time. I struggle to let go ๐Ÿ˜‚ Until a few months ago I still had 2. Thankfully now it's just the Flying Carrot My current Westfield is my 1st and probably my last as I cannot see myself selling it for another. No point, it's an amazing car and I'm extremely attached to it. I will make a few small changes over time but nowt major. I actually do have ADHD and I suspect that does play a role in my impulse buying and not selling when I should. I was homeless once and lost near enough everything. 15 years later it was all back again. Clearing out junk and stuff is not my forte ๐Ÿ˜‚

  33. Thought I'd give an update given I've just collected the car again... The garage did some tests before they dived in head deep into the engine and the upshot is that what you see in the header tank is rust/residue/crud from not driving it over winter. It's not oil and I'm not losing oil into the coolant after all. However, a leak test revealed some cylinders leaking upto 40%, and that combined with oily plugs (new ones fitted this winter) it seems my engine is now a heavy drinker of the black (the other black) stuff. Advised to check frequently, top up when needed and start saving for a full engine rebuild...
