Well, despite the rain, we had a fantastic time last night! Sadly a few had to pull out due to mechanical gremlins and a handful decided the weather was too bad but we still had a great turnout. Loads of assorted Westfields, MK's, MNR, Pheonix, MX5, MR2 and even a Cobra! The session started wet, then just as we were getting a bit of a dryish line, the rain came again. Driving standards were generally really good (other than a couple of Civics who were a little over enthusiastic) and everyone left with their car in one piece 👍 Every one of my 5 runs were with a different passenger, the last of which was Alex as I'd twisted his arm for some feedback on my driving given his experience in the Speed Series (hoping to teach this old dog some new tricks! 😂). As usual, my bravery outweighed my talent and on what would have been my fastest and last lap, I took him for a scenic tour of the lovely beach situated outside Coppice corner 😂😂 Amazing fun, roll on the next one!! Some photos (most aren't mine!)9 points

It seems some cars in my town have contracted Bagpuss-itis. What they've been up to I have no idea but it seems to be spreading! One car can't seem to make it's mind up between Bagpuss symptoms and those of kit car yellow-itis. Either way I'm staying indoors until they develop a vaccine or the Flying Carrot develops natural immunity 😂😂6 points

With the Newark Kit Car Show coming up this weekend, are there any Speed Series competitors that would be able to come and display their car to help advertise the Speed Series a little bit? Doesn't need to be a polished show car, just having at least 1 car down would be a step forward in trying to keep the Speed Series alive!3 points

Sylva STM Phoenix.... A cost effective alternative to a Westfield...... Registered 1998, rebuilt 2005 and fitted with a Kawasaki ZX9R Engine. My favourite experience on that front was long ago in California. I worked my way through a knot of freeway traffic and saw the road at the front was wide open, and as I was driving a 1966 Shelby 350 GT, it would have been rude not to stick my toe down. As I did, I discovered why the road was open - a CHP car on the right, which I only noticed after I blew his light bar off the roof. Instant disco of course, and I pulled over straight away like a good boy. Eventually, he walked up to my window and said, “Nice car. Do you know you were doing 80mph?” I looked him straight in the eye and said in all seriousness, “That’s impossible. I haven’t even been out for an hour.” He looked back at me, blinking his eyes a few times before finally responding, “Nope - not heard that one before. Slow down.”, then returning to his car and driving off. 😎2 points

I've been driving 35 years and only been caught three times.... twice were very marginal, in the early hours on the motorway (they were obviously bored) so I got away with a telling off/lecture. The third time, 10 years ago I was sweating a little waiting for the inevitable letter..... Not wanting to incriminate myself, but I was "getting a bit of a wriggle on" down an A-Road in my twin turbo BMW overtaking a line of trucks. The throttle had been pinned for a while before I spotted the camera van.... I'd hit the brakes that hard the photo that dropped through the door showed my hazard lights on 😂 Given the speed that I may or may not have been at before hitting the brakes, I was VERY VERY happy and relieved to get the course. Some parts were interesting and I learned a few things. The single most interesting thing was the amazing lack of knowledge of some other drivers in the room.... scary stuff! Anyway, I've learned my lesson and I now drive like Miss Daisy 😇2 points

Hi Dave, thanks for your concern, but fears can be relieved, a replacement cable has been delivered to replace the worst bodge I’ve seen thus far… & yes, it’s what sparks new questions as to “who, why & what else”! ATB Phil R1 point

I have a friend who was caught going through some temporary roadwork traffic lights somewhere in Scotland. He went through on Amber but the police, who were halfway along the roadworks said it was impossible due to the timing of the lights and he must have gone through on red. After an appeal he was fined, don't think he got points, but could pay monthly. Each month he received a letter saying his payment was due, then another letter for the payment with a prepaid envelope, then a receipt when paid. The cost of the 4 monthly letters and the administration must have been more than the fine.1 point

One time I didn't show down quickly enough entering a 30 zone. There were two police hiding in a bus shelter, one with a hand held speed gun. One zapped me and flagged me down. The other came up to me and said "Does sir know how fast sir was going?" I made a non-committal answer about slowing down for the 30 zone, which I was (it was probably about 40-ish when he zapped me). He said "Well, it might interest sir to know that sir was going..." and turned to his colleague with the gun to fill in the number. His colleague looked at the gun, looked puzzled then started slapping and shaking it furiously. Finally he quietly said "It's gone." He rolled his eyes and said "Well, it looks like sir has had a lucky escape. Be more careful in future." Phew! D1 point

Can't help with the parts, but for sanity's sake, I'd be checking exactly what's under that insulating tape... It's not ideal to have a joint in it, but I can see why it could happen. just make sure it's a decent quality join! As literally everything is going through that red wire.1 point

That’s brilliant Rob, I know what amazed me at the last course I did was a number of attendees didn’t have English as a first language, with the only measurable outcome being for full time attendance and with little engagement in the course, I’m unsure if some gained anything from the course.1 point

We can make space in the pop up Gazeebo for a speed series display car so if the weather turns at any point you will be dry 😁1 point

Well I picked up the SE and drove back from Stoke in the pouring rain. Handling a bit leary but who knows if it has been set up properly. Engine seems well out of tune but again who knows when last tuned. Receipts and folders many from Westfield suggest engine maybe a 1600GT do need to check numbers. Possibly a Kent A2 fast road cam. it may all just need a good clean of carbs, reset tappets and general fettle. All hopefully straight forward enough.1 point

IMHO speed traps are purely there to raise money and have little or nothing to do with safety1 point

After several failed attempts I now have tyres. I somehow confused all the local tyre fitting workshops and their suppliers by wanting four tyres fitting to a moped 😀 the wheels were possibly in the worst condition that I could have bought but they were also the cheapest and as I was planning to get them blasted and powdercoated the condition didn’t really matter that much. this is the before and then after. With tyres fitting I could finally get them mounted onto the chassis. And then I wheeled it out into the sunshine for a few photos and the first test drive. after a short test I found one of the front brakes was binding slightly which appeared to be linked to the size of the master cylinder I’d fitted as the pads weren’t retracting back far enough. Initially I’d gone for a 5/8” but have now changed that to a 3/4” bore which now seems to have cured the problem. next job bodywork.1 point

Another very positive experience with A-Plan. I called the Thatcham branch, but they were too busy so I was put through to Sam at the Witney branch. She was extremely helpful and professional, so I am now insured via A-Plan and very happy! I definitely recommend them, and glad of the info on this thread, as I was not looking forward to sorting out the insurance after a few years off the road, but it turned out to be a very straightforward experience.1 point

This scenario reminds me of my wife's (Natalie) late Grandad. His garden was nowhere near the size of yours but he had a push along cylinder mower and a pair of hand shears for the hedges. I said to him (trying to be helpful) why don't we get you a petrol mower and electric hedge cutter???? He just glared at me and said "The longer I'm out here the less time I'm in there, so dont you dare!" He was referring to Natalie's Nan sat in the house🤣1 point
