Out early this morning and Tommy all washed down then off to Alford. Roads were cold damp and sketchy so took it easy, even took Tommy to Kirk … Got to Alford and washed the crud off again lol, then Scott and Sheila arrived having had the cheek to ask the policeman who was washing the police car down to do the westy too !!! And he did !!!! Willy and William arrived and then John so parked up it was time for a blether and a bacon roll . Unfortunately there wasn’t a great turnout so we would head out for a blast round the hills via Ballater and corgarf. On pulling out near Aboyne Willies westy cut out under acceleration so doubled back and checked as much as possible at the roadside to no avail, hope the recovery got you home safely . So a lovely blast over the hills saw me catch up at corgarf where we had a bite to eat before blatting up over the lecht and back to Dufftown A great day out with great company and hope Willy is sorted soon.6 points

Cracking run out today. We met at the Tudor Rose, and after a brief chat, headed for the Ponderosa for breakfast. We then decided on heading west on the A5, turning off at Capel Curig towards Beddgelert. Headed for Maentrwog, we eventually joined the B4391 east towards Bala, turning off to join the B4501 up to Cerrigydrudion where we'd take to forest road to Ruthin. I like this time of year in the Westie, still warm enough if you wrap up, lovely Autumnul views and the roads are that bit quieter. Thanks everyone for coming.5 points

Hi all, Julie Hall has organised for her area to visit the Great British Car Journey Museum in Derbyshire on Sunday 24th October. She has opened this up to surrounding areas, so I thought we could support this. If you are interested, then you will need to phone Jane on 07967370877 or Jason on 01773 317 243 to book your place, mentioning you are with the club to receive your discounted entry price of just £10. Details: Venue: The Great British Car Journey Museum, Derwent Works, Ambergate, Derbyshire, DE56 2HE Date/Time: Sunday 24th October, meeting at the Museum for 10am. Hoping a few of you will be interested in this, it looks like a brilliant day out. www.greatbritishcarjourney.com Nick.2 points

Just for clarity, I was suggesting the 6 speed wasn't worth the extra weight. Hope the way I wrote it wasn't adding an extra layer of confusion!2 points

Thanks again for the replies I have to say, one of the big reasons for picking a Westfield over the other options was this forum and the people here willing to help out people like me, so it's really appreciated1 point

All very much as Dommo said, the Mk1 mx5 uprights are a slightly different geometry to the Mk2 but you can always swap these out cheaply enough for another pair. the Mk2 1.8 exhaust manifold is also different to the Mk1 so you’d either need to spend the extra on the Westfield 4-1 manifold (well worth it) or alternatively find a Mk1 manifold so you can then fit the link pipe that comes in the kit. IMO the 1.6 is the better engine out of the box than the 1.8 as its lighter and more willing to rev and will build you a car 30kg lighter but theres better availability of the 1.8 engines and you can’t deny their tuning potential.1 point

It might have something to do with the uprights on the mk2 being different, affecting steering geometry. I think the arms mount slightly higher on the mk2. I thought as long as you told Westfield what donor you were using they'd weld the steering rack brackets to suit. Mk1s don't tend to be so cheap anymore. My thoughts on mk1/mk2 1.8s: VVT solenoid will be tricky to squeeze under the normal bonnet, but think some have. Might leave the sump rather low though, and they're low enough as it is Exhaust manifold. Ah this must be what they were referring to. The mk1 1.8 has a 4-1 manifold, so the Westfield supplied downpipe is a single pipe shaped to route through from the manifold to somewhere a silencer link pipe would be expected to start. The mk2 has a 4-2 manifold, so the Westfield downpipe wouldn't fit that. Easy solution though would be to bolt a mk1 1.8 manifold to the mk2, or spend the extra on the manifold that Westfield sell If you're definitely not going to be looking for 160bhp+, try and find a 1.6. Might as well use a lighter donor after all, and no slower than a 1.8 in the real world. It would make an excellent road car!1 point

My advice…don’t do a track day in the mx5, you’ll end up keeping it!1 point

Not so quick @aeg I was thinking the same about @Andy Westwoodand the chance of more cake for the rest of us and was planning on coming. I’ll confirm nearer the time when I know how things have panned out here.1 point

Last trackday, tried new (external ) microphone location (this time instead of wind noise... some electrical noise :-/ better than wind, but still not perfect. Maybe due to long, not shielded cable to the microphone? or microphone location itself ? (attached to some cable under the dash) Starting to try/learn Gopro Only software ( Racetechnology for Gopro , https://www.race-technology.com/us/gopro/download-software ) , seems a little complicated but.. at least something else than mainstream Racechrono1 point
