Q: How many group members does it take to change a light bulb ? 1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed. 14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently. 7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs. 17 purists who use candles and are offended by light bulb discussions. 6 to argue over whether it's 'lightbulb' or 'light bulb'. Another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid. 22 to tell THOSE 6 to stop being jerks. 2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is 'lamp'. 15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that 'light bulb' is perfectly correct. 49 to post memes and gifs (several are of Michael Jackson eating popcorn with the words added, “I’m just here for the comments.”) 19 to post that this page is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a light bulb page. 11 to defend the posting to this page saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant here. 24 to discuss the merits of LED/swirly fluorescent light bulbs 44 to claim LED and fluorescent bulbs will kill you. 12 to post F. 8 to ask what F means. 7 to post 'Following' but there's 3 dots at the top right that means you don't have to. 3 to say "can't share" 2 to reply "can't share from a closed group" 36 People to post pics of their own light bulbs. 15 People to post "I can't see S$%^!" and use their own light bulbs. 6 to report the post or PM an admin because someone said "f÷×$" 4 to say "Didn't we go through this already a short time ago?". 13 to say "Do a search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs". 1 to bring politics into the discussion by adding that (insert politician of choice) isn't the brightest bulb. This usually takes place within the first three comments. 50 more to get into personal attacks over their political views. 5 admins to ban the light bulb posters who took it all too seriously. 1 late arrival to comment on the original post 6 months later and start it all over again.6 points

Reading this. It actually seems that I have been unluky. And I sort of understand that the general feeling is different of mine, as I've been involved in 3 of them in the last month or so. HOWEVER!!!! only one of them was my fault (that goes for the self reflection thing) and I think I'm right to beleave its the first time someone had to moderate one of my messages. But, understand that, if in one way or the other I'm involved or feelt in 3 moderated topics, in a short period of time, I may have the sense that the intervention is beeing much higher than it actually is. Now, I see Ian's chart, and I can only retract my words, and state that yes, the moderation line is the same as allways, and unfortunately I have been somehow involved in some of them. That taking in account that I'm not a super active member, kind of felt odd. (that is aside of If I think they should or shouldn't have been moderated). thanks @Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO for bringing this up and proving me wrong. I apologise.4 points

Probably the worst kept secret, but I can now confirm that I am travelling on Wednesday to collect my Westie to return it back where it belongs. It looks like its going to need a bit fettling to correct the running issue, but hopefully nothing too major.4 points

Just discovered this vid. Well worth a watch. The F3 race at Cadwell in the second half is really good quality for it's age. It's a bit of an eye opener to see the lack of barriers in places, and no kerbs. A real barn at Barn corner too. 😉 (I actually attended a race at Rufforth too.. still got a program somewhere. ) Enjoy. 😎2 points

Nothing to see here... And to be fair, it was a very polite b*ll***ing 😄2 points

Just a further point, members can and often do directly hide their own posts for various reasons. So don’t assume just because a post has gone it’s been moderated. I don’t think it’s still the case*, but with some even quite recent versions of the forum software, if the person that started a thread hid their own, first post, it automatically hid the whole thread, dragging all replies along with it. (Obviously, not ideal.) (*As in, I just briefly, tried it and couldn’t do it without cheating and using admin rights). We do sometimes get those who post up a piece of information or something intended to perhaps just be a short concise post, get in touch if the thread has gone completely astray, in their eyes, and are asked to hide/remove it. We will review any request like that on its individual circumstances, but will usually try and look favourably on the request. Provided it’s legitimate. (This is 95% Stuff and Nonsense with a small proportion of Start Line threads.) Outside of that, there are some forum areas, like Tech Talk, The FAQ and the sales sections where things are a little different, but this is stated in the forum sub sections description, (or should be! ) These areas, may, at the moderation/admin teams discretion be edited to keep subjects relevant and broadly on topic. It is true that sometimes if a not directly relevant, but useful/important drift occurs, it may well be allowed to continue, until either it’s run out of steam, but is considered to beneficial to move, and split off, or, it gets its own real momentum going and is split off into its own active thread. This last bit is where it’s tricky knowing how long to let it ride; split off a beneficial drift too early, and it kills the debate stone dead, loosing the benefit of everyone’s experience, to late, and momentum is lost from the original thread, stalling that one, instead. Sales is slightly different. We don’t have a “no post bumping” policy, unlike some forums, we try to just use common sense. If someone wants to bump their own advert every few weeks or months, whereas if someone decides to virtually spam themselves for a week, you know who I’m looking at here, Blatters(!) we will nicely, ask them to reign it back a notch. By the same token, if a bit of occasional chatter helps keep an advert near the top, most of the team will not worry about it. If however someone starts a major debate on someone else sales thread, or worse still, starts trashing it the team will dive in and start trying to sort things out. So to sum up, not all things that may look like moderation are! Sometimes it’s just members tidying up after themselves.2 points

I’m hanging fire just now, she said today that they’re hoping to go back into the tier system end of April , but there will be tighter controls on moving between areas if they are in different tiers, also something about the cases per hundred thousand tier criteria has been cut making it harder to get in a lower tier i think I’ll keep one eye on numbers and one on what’s happening up here.1 point

Aircraft maint engineer. Started out at the former British aerospace Woodford constructing regional jets and then onto (doomed) nimrod refits. Also managed to grab a few days as an apprentice with the retired old boys on the vulcan that resides there Moved into heavy base maint about 17 years ago and gained my licences, moved out on the line a few years after where I've been ever since. I've been incredibly lucky with some of the opportunities to travel that have arisen and still love the job, despite the current insecurities that are around the whole industry for obvious reasons.1 point

It helps because you know what to spray on engine when that goes up !!. When Halon got banned I had loads of them as garage extinguishers, replaced by AFFF.1 point

I just thought it useful for people to see the stats and form their own opinions. You weren't wrong. Only you know how you feel and there's nothing wrong with asking questions. Noted but no really needed! This great club belongs to the great members who are part of it, not just the committee or mod team. Yes, a small minority may 'rock the boat' occasionally and it does cause additional work and pain for the team behind the scene etc. Best wishes, Ian1 point

I would have been at the Rufforth meeting as an 11 year old. The September Battle of Britain meeting was always special with the air displays - the memory of Vulcans doing victory rolls, loops and the roar as they did vertical climbs lives with me to this day. It is great to see the club members building the circuit on the Friday evenings in the knowledge that they would have to pack it all away again on Saturday evening after the racing to allow the gliders back on the runways on Sunday. My parents used to take me there from about 1968 (in the family Humber Sceptre MkII) and a cousin of dad's raced there in the early 1970s with a Ford Cortina MkI with a Buick V8 (forerunner of the Rover V8) fitted. Tony Dean was the local star and I saw him race legendary cars like Ferrari Dino 206SP, Porsche 908, McLaren M8, Chevron B42 (F5000). It was always exciting to see the latest Chevrons making their debuts each Spring. Great times - once I got my bike in 1973, I wasn't reliant on lifts as I used to cycle the 18 miles there and back (with a flask full of Mum's chicken curry to warm me on a cold day)! Rufforth was also the first place that I ever marshalled a rally. I saw a note in Motoring News one Thursday in February 1976 that De Lacy Motor Club needed marshals there for the following day's stage on the Mintex Seven Dales Rally. A school friend had the use of his Mum's Hillman Imp so he was roped in so we could go and help out. We put out empty barrels to define the course. It was a foggy morning and we nearly drove off the end of the runway into a ploughed field as we could hardly see past the end of the bonnet. Andy Dawson won the rally in the Chequered Flag Stratos, followed by Russell Brookes and Ari Vatanen in Ford Escort MkIIs. We watched all the cars through, then cleared up and still home at normal time so my parents were none the wiser! The start of a hobby that still excites me 45years on.1 point

That carb set up on the red mini at the start was a rare one. I suspect that would have been sat on a very trick head as well. I love these old films where people got dressed up in suits and ties just to go out the an event like this1 point

Well that was all very exciting, anyone know where I can get more popcorn?! 😂 Seriously though, this club and forum has been a fantastic oasis of normality, camaraderie, common sense and good humour throughout a really tough 12 months. Elsewhere in the world unfortunately, this often has not been the case. I personally feel very strongly that the Club Committee, Moderators and AO's have all done us proud in difficult circumstances, keep up the great work! 👏👏 To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, you can't please all of the people all of the time....1 point

Stuff and Nonsense. It certainly is. A forum for posting exactly what it says. It’s not restricted to Westfields, or even tin tops, but open to wider points of interest. This forum should allow anything that fits the title. As a Liverpool supporter I was saddened to hear of the passing of Ian St John, a football legend. YNWA. Why shouldn’t that be allowed? Posts on covid, brexit and Coronation Street have, in the whole, been engaged in and enjoyed by members. The problem comes with personalities. It’s very easy to take offence at a written word. And when participants start to say nasty things and use obscene words, then it’s time for moderation. And the pm system should be used responsibly, not as a kangaroo court. If you feel the need for a personal slanging match with a member, then phone or email might be a better option, not this forum, which is read by many as a form of entertainment, especially in these dull times we have to endure at the moment. And here’s another book to add to Blatman’s suggestion, looks like it might come in useful.1 point

Did you notice the lap times Adam. In practice they were doing 1-39s.. I thought, cool! I can go quicker than that in my Westy. 😎 They then knocked six seconds off in the race.. 1-33? Pretty sure a well sorted Westy (Lobbo) would get round quicker? Just basking in the thought of Pintosaurus out qualifying messers Hunt, Peterson etc etc. The circuit will of course be a lot quicker now than it was then.. but let's not spoil things with facts.. 😉1 point
-
Yea, the track looks pretty much identical - the proximity to grass banks, what looks like a stone-y embankment (!), barriers and lack of kerbs did have me thrown a few times though!1 point
-
I dont think the circuit layout has changed at all over the years. They've removed a big grass bank in the middle of Hall bends, and a tree here and there, and obviously laid kerbs and barriers. For an international event, the paddock has a definite clubbie feel about it. A Frank Williams racing transporter not much bigger than some club racers use nowadays.. 😉 .. and cars parked up on muddy grass.. Happy days. 🙂1 point

Ah, the memories of moderation duty... 🙄 I think if people expect to be cut a bit of slack for the slightly OTT things they post once in a blue moon, moderators deserve the same bit of slack. They’re not perfect (Lord knows I wasn’t) but they are doing their best and you can take it to the bank when I tell you it’s a thankless volunteer unpaid job. It was almost without fail that the dreaded moderation report email would ping into my inbox in either the evening after a long rotten work day or a Sunday morning when I just wanted peace and quiet and a chance to recharge. It’s not easy to strike a balance and it’s easy to not quite succeed. The moderation team does a great job - not a perfect one, but a great one and they have my appreciation and support.1 point
