  1. At a time when so much terrible is happening so close to us, we need to remember the good in the best of us. This is a wonderful tribute to Sir Nicholas Winton, known as the British Schindler. Link to BBC article Never again. 🕯

  4. I had a problem with a faulty part, bought early on in the Honda rebuild. Discovered over Christmas it had failed, spoke to parts, and a warranty replacement was with me in double time. Certainly can’t complain about the service from parts.

  5. With the floor having received a second coat of primer, I poured the infill section last night. Despite putting the primer on with a brush, and therefore it was a bit thicker, I still got some pinholes. I did end up going just over the cut edge in a couple of places as I was using the edge to guide the trowel. These bits will be easily cut back to flat with a combination of my new grinding cup and a sander. The open end now has the crisp, clean edge I was wanting.

  6. Trying to keep up the progress since Christmas I’ve been in talks with a couple of people about both the roll bar fabrication and also a couple of jobs I will need doing in the engine. I’m prioritising pulling together the parts needed for this as the engine gearbox and chassis work are the first three that need to be completed before I can reassemble the car. It’s such a tight fit in the engine bay that I need to fit these first and then assemble everything else around them. the latest job completed is the inlet manifold. I’d made a mock up using SU’s for hen I gas the exhaust fabricated but after some thought and a few conversations with race organisers I’m switching back to Weber’s for ease and simplicity. The car was run with both over the years and series regulations require me to run the car in a period specification so It was a choice between either twin 1-1/2” SU HS4’s or a single Weber Carburetor. When I bought the car it was fitted with the Weber on a crude manifold. This was a prototype but far from ideal and despite the tubes having a reasonable diameter the hose joiners reduces this to little over an inch. This made its way to the bin quite soon after I got the car so it’s time for something better. There was no chance of getting anything off the shelf since the engine orientation is so different to the Hillman imp so I had to start from scratch and given the problems I’m having getting parts made right now and looking to save a bit of money I thought I’d have a go myself. First off we start with a drawing and then onto fabrication. my welding skills are slowly getting better but cosmetically still not perfect, but luckily most were to be dressed smooth any how. Just a coat of paint needed now.

  8. Hi Guys Just joined back up having been away for a good while. Sadly my westie has not seen the light of day for a few years now following on from a 'quick rewire and some small improvements! As ever things got deeper and deeper until i just ran out of steam. Fast forward past a whole bunch of getting nowhere fast and my enthusiasm has returned! I hope to have it back on the road this year. Still plenty to do but i'm really enjoying it now. Nice to be back at it. Cheers Rich

  9. Standing on the train platform at Birkenau was the straw that broke the camels back when I went. To be stood on the ground of so much death and evil was a feeling I think can only be felt by visiting. Shocking.

  15. Indeed - my apologies as it’s certainly not a subject to joke about. It does beggar belief that it wasn’t taught in school and that human beings are capable of such unspeakable evil.

  23. I was doing social distancing before the pandemic. 😉 Why not select some dates you fancy @Rush Motorsport, and see how many takers there are? As I said I dont want to book anything yet, and I dont think there's any need to book this minute, but if things start to move, we can just pull the pin and book whichever date we've targeted? Croft? 😉

  24. Hi Andrew, Yes mine was a MK3, i got it needing a full resto which was done and did the car show scene for some years, got bored of standing about in fields so stripped it down again and went racing with it. Took many years to get the rear suspension to work properly, extra radius arms was one well worth mod, as well as altering the position of the spring mounting within the uprights. I dont have many pics as my racing days was pre - internet and digital cameras, I do have one pic I bought from an event photographer which hangs on my wall seen below. All bodywork was eventually swapped for my own fibreglass panels, although the bonnet and GT roof was the Ashley conversion from back in the day. Used to run 62 odd seconds at Loton which is where the pic was taken... although I see now you cant take the line I did in 1997, cany recall the corner name, but the 90 left before Triangle corner. 26. On a related topic (well, this is the internet), for when the weather is warmer and we are allowed out again, I can recommend the Coy Carp in Harefield. It's situated on the Grand Union canal and River Colne. The food are drink are excellent, and there is a nice outdoor area over-looking the water. The car park is good, so it's a good destination for a drive-out. It's best to book, as they do get busy. https://www.vintageinn.co.uk/restaurants/london/thecoycarpharefielduxbridge

  27. That's most kind of you to say! Whist I'm not the fastest worker in the world by a long way, I do like to think I can achieve a reasonable level of finish so its good to see that a pro thinks I'm doing ok! In one way, having to do this extra step is making things even better. The end of the floor slopes away more than I realised, so the extra layer will actually make it flat and level! Equally, I'm not aiming for level as such, more that it ends up flat so that I can roll engine stands and the like about with ease and not end up kneeling on any little bumps or divots as that's a massive pet hate of mine. I think I've done a decent job of it so far, so it makes the cost of the materials easier to stomach.

  28. At this rate you will make a professional screeder, as with most things it is worth a little extra time and effort to properly prepare, the end results will be great. I laid my garage floor over 20 years ago, although had to tile the mid section for the wife( not buried under, which she can confirm😨) and it is still looking good.

  29. Why not do a cut back 100 to 150mm and scabble back the edge to depth, then you can apply topping to new edge. I would strongly advise against feather edging as very few materials can handle it over the long term, far neater and better to form a good square edge and if required make a feature of it introducing an expansion gap, later filled with suitable mastic which can be almost invisible.

  30. This thread is long overdue an update but the truth is that very little progress has been made over the last 6 months. With Covid restrictions in place and the inevitable impact this and furlough have had on many of the local businesses I’ve been using I found it easier to leave it until matters improved. Before things were put on pause one major job that I did compete was a full trial assembly of the car with all the parts. I wanted to do the as a) I had no idea how it went together and b) I had no idea if I had all the bits. Well it’s complete and aside from a couple of small questions along the way most of it seems to be there and fit as if expect. As for the questions well one of the rear trailing arms is half an inch longer than the other, no idea why as the chassis mounts are in the same location so I suspect it’s just lazy welding and the other is that I’m missing most of the coolant hoses from the front of the car so need to figure how this crosses the pedal box. Over the Christmas break I’ve been looking into the Roll hoop, this is only 1” diameter tube so has got to go. A replacement hoop has been drawn up so I’m now at the stage of getting prices for this to be fabricated and fitted. For now just a plywood mockup to show. The other major milestone is that I’ve sourced a suitable engine for the car. I’d originally looked at getting something built as the spec required for this car would be scarce to say the least. By chance I spotted an advert that sparked my interest and after an exchange of emails the deal was done. The engine in question was built by George Bevan for the imp touring car. For those who no their Imps the Bevan Imp raced to victory in 3 years running from 1970-72 in the British saloon car championship at the hands of Bill McGovern. This engine was the spare from that very car and I bought it directly from the Bevan family so can attest it’s provenance. The spec is as good as it gets, 998cc, R23 steel full race cam (9200rpm) ported and polished head with wills rings, lightened rods and balanced crank all of which takes the power from the stock 39bhp to a conservative estimate of 110bhp based on period data.
