This is something I’m posting with deep shock, huge sadness and profound embarrassment. Yesterday’s events in Washington DC did not surprise me, but they did hurt me to my core. There is no point in me going over the details as we all saw the horrific events that happened. Many of you will know I have dual US / UK nationality and have for 20 years now. I was born in the US Midwest and moved here in 1987, and found a wonderful country steeped in history, humour, bravery and kindness. It was my privilege and honour to become a naturalised UK citizen. I initially took the boardroom name “Captain Colonial” just to indicate my origins because I talk funny and to take the mickey out of myself. I’ve never been a Stars and Stripes flag waving American who thinks America can do no wrong. The club members here seem to have understood that completely. It’s been a very, very long night for me. In light of what happened yesterday and the fact that those crimes go against everything I believe and respect about American democracy, I cannot in good faith or conscience retain my boardroom name, even if it was all in good humour. Therefore I have this morning changed it to my real name, which most of you know anyway. I hope you will understand my decision to do so. I’m not going to discuss the matter further, but you deserve to know why I’ve done so and I wanted to make it clear. Thank you.4 points

Only just found this thread and wowser - what a read! Thanks to all who have posted and hope you are all coping with current situation in whatever ways you can. This is obviously a very supportive environment, emotionally as well as mechanically. People often say we should treat mental illness as we would a broken leg - but the problem is that those of us who haven't experienced it can't really understand "why" or "how" or "what to do" to help. My son has had depression on and off for last few years (I think because he expects perfection from himself) and I'm just hoping that now he's been Ok for the last 12 months that latest lockdown and loss of his business again doesn't seem an impossible hole to climb out of. Reading the tales and thoughts in this chain has given me some insight into a few possible whys and an understanding of the frustrations involved in knowing your thoughts may not be logical but still struggling to manage them - sorry if that isn't a good explanation. My son says he knows when he is making poor decisions but is still unable to do anything to allow him to make better ones. Thanks again to all posters - you've improved my understanding immensely. Best wishes with managing your situations - please continue to help each other.4 points

I respect your decision, however have to say I treat all people as people and don't judge on race, creed, nationality etc Hence I'd hope all on here also have treated you similarly. Surely the fact that this 'crazy bunch' elected you as Chair, is a measure of how you were accepted etc. Please don't change one bit and stay as you are, Captain3 points

Happy new year The SSOT have been working to develop a new beginners guide, there has previously been one in 2012/13 but was that outdated it was worth us having another go. This is not the exhaustive list of all requirments but as you will see this is aimed at giving a starting point rather than having to guide your way though the Motorsport UK Blue Book alone for the first time. if anyone need any further clarifications or have questions please ask via the hotline and the SSOT will do their best to answer and keep this document updated regularly with any changes as and when notifcation is recieved. upated 19.01.2021 to add new race suit approvals and towing point clarification. Ben, Yellow for me! Having recently taken delivery of a Yellow Westfield, I love it! As did a random lady in the local petrol station. She told me she loved the car too. Get noticed, get yellow! Hedley.1 point

Got a few good friends in the US, I really do despair about the long term damage to family's and communities this will cause. (Comparing it to the in many cases, still un-healed splits and divisions of the miners strike, here in the UK.) I feel for you this day Captain, I really do.1 point

I too am saddened that the events of yesterday have caused this and whilst it is a massive shame I completey understand and support the decision. I really hope that once the cause and effects are removed and consigned to the "what the F was that all about" pages of history, that we will again see the rise of Captain Colonial. Until then Captain, I salute you.1 point

I'm sorry that events have brought you to this decision Scott. I deplore the behaviour of those in Washington D.C. yesterday, but they are still, as ever, heavily outnumbered by Good People in USA. Nevertheless I understand and respect your feelings.1 point

Every time I hear that I take the opportunity to explain that the only thing we have to remember is to wear a mask, keep 6 feet away from people and wash yer 'ands when you get home and/or have some hand sanitiser with you just in case the place you are going isn't providing any. I think people watch and listen to the news and with all the tier this and closed that and whatever, and they think they have to remember it all. The simple stuff (as much as I hate to trot out Govrnment mantra) hands, face, space, is lost in the noise.1 point

Agree Jeff They don't get further than blaming someone else and or have any form of responsibility. We are too soft. All I hear is - its too confusing and I dont understand so I'm going to do what I want. Its just an excuse and confirms the lack of responsibility.1 point

Those who know me well would know that I’m lost without a project on the go so to pass the time over the summer I found something to keep me occupied while not working on the Costin. I’ve always fancied restoring a bike but not having a licence limits my options somewhat if I ever want to ride it. After a bit of searching the Testi Champion ticked the boxes but being Italian they’re few and far between in the U.K. a suitable project was found in Italy and after a few emails I was able to convince the seller to dismantle the bike and post it to me in 3-boxes! Suffice to say that my local postman was less than impressed with this. Against all odds it arrived safely (missing a few nuts and bolts) but all the important bits were there. from this.... to this....1 point

This thread is long overdue an update but the truth is that very little progress has been made over the last 6 months. With Covid restrictions in place and the inevitable impact this and furlough have had on many of the local businesses I’ve been using I found it easier to leave it until matters improved. Before things were put on pause one major job that I did compete was a full trial assembly of the car with all the parts. I wanted to do the as a) I had no idea how it went together and b) I had no idea if I had all the bits. Well it’s complete and aside from a couple of small questions along the way most of it seems to be there and fit as if expect. As for the questions well one of the rear trailing arms is half an inch longer than the other, no idea why as the chassis mounts are in the same location so I suspect it’s just lazy welding and the other is that I’m missing most of the coolant hoses from the front of the car so need to figure how this crosses the pedal box. Over the Christmas break I’ve been looking into the Roll hoop, this is only 1” diameter tube so has got to go. A replacement hoop has been drawn up so I’m now at the stage of getting prices for this to be fabricated and fitted. For now just a plywood mockup to show. The other major milestone is that I’ve sourced a suitable engine for the car. I’d originally looked at getting something built as the spec required for this car would be scarce to say the least. By chance I spotted an advert that sparked my interest and after an exchange of emails the deal was done. The engine in question was built by George Bevan for the imp touring car. For those who no their Imps the Bevan Imp raced to victory in 3 years running from 1970-72 in the British saloon car championship at the hands of Bill McGovern. This engine was the spare from that very car and I bought it directly from the Bevan family so can attest it’s provenance. The spec is as good as it gets, 998cc, R23 steel full race cam (9200rpm) ported and polished head with wills rings, lightened rods and balanced crank all of which takes the power from the stock 39bhp to a conservative estimate of 110bhp based on period data.1 point

i suppose it depends on how fast you want to go.. fast? you need blue.. very fast? you need blue with gold stripes for that, super fast? then you need blue with gold strips and red pin strips, Effing ballistic ? then for that the only choice is blue with gold stripes, red pinstriping, gold wheels, and red seatbelts.. The end 🤣1 point

Overall I have found my Yellow OK for flies and bugs. But YES - very occasionally it does get attcked, BUT worth it for the best colour!1 point
