  1. Yesterday’s daily Covid hospital admissions translate into 40,000 a month, into an NHS that has 120,000 overnight beds, but more pointedly, was designed and staffed for only 4000 critical care beds. We built that capacity because people get sick, so 3,000 critical care beds might be occupied by ‘non Covid’ sick people, nothing else got magically cured when Covid came along, and we can’t send them home. “Excess deaths is the key metric” we have seen repeatedly, and people want to measure against that AND a diametrically opposed metric, the economy. I say, actually neither will be the key metric this winter. The key metrics this winter are: Can we provide NHS facilities and staff so that Covid patients that could be saved are given that chance? Can we provide NHS facilities and staff so that Covid patients that cannot be saved are cared for in their final days? Can we do that and carry on non-Covid activities like emergency bypasses, cancer surgeries, and all of the others. Not to put too fine a point on it, if we don’t stop the spread, people will die at home in their beds, in hospital car parks or corridors, effectively slowly drowning. It is about getting through this winter with some shred of our humanity left.

  5. Thailand seems to have things under control too. Our youngest son lives there and he says things are pretty 'normal' but masks were already quite popular there anyway, and at the mo they haven't got hoardes of marauding Chinese tourists around. In fact I'm going through the process of applying for a 12 month visa right now, ready for when this lockdown is over, and if I'm successful and can find a way of getting there before Christmas I'll be off like a shot, the 14 day quarantine will be a bit grueling but after that I know our sons house will be a darn sight safer than anywhere here.

  6. Just because we are in lockdown for a month doesn’t mean we should stop everything. We can carry on eating cake! The year may have been ‘different’ but we still managed to get out and about a bit. Special thanks needs to go to @Julie Hall - Peak District AO for organising trips out when it has been correct to do so. Whilst thanking people, special mentions for@Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO and @Martyn Vann - Warwickshire AO and @Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Secretary for all of your help throughout the year sorting out my technical issues and practical skills.

  9. A thank you right back at you @AndrewBClarke for driving all those miles to join us in our cake fest's. Hope to see you on the 6th December, when the activities will recommence. I now need to go back to calculating how long it takes for my engine to get warm at max 30mph and if that will take me to my local park for my daily exercise.
