An update - started yesterday with the first section and it was a great day out with Amanda and our dog Pixie. The weather was perfect for us, good visibility, warm but cloudy with a few sunny spells. We parked at Porlock Weir by the Ship Inn, with a pre-booked taxi waiting to take us back to the start at Minehead. There is a fairly steep section at the start as you ascend through broadleaf woods up to North Hill. We chose to take the higher path over the top, rather than the more rugged route which is a bit more strenuous. There are superb views along the coast and across the Bristol Channel to Wales. We had the path mostly to ourselves for the morning, a few more people out and about when we dropped down to Bossington and Porlock in the afternoon. Thoroughly enjoyed our sandwiches and a Pint of Exmoor Ale when we arrived back at the Ship Inn. There was a steady turn-over of visitors on the tables outside the pub but no queue, and everyone was being careful to keep their distance. We're very fortunate to have such a superb coastline in the UK. Will start thinking about our next walk.4 points

I've had a root through the garage and made up a sort of bung that's a tight fit in mine. Would need plenty of gaffer tape to seal it properly I reckon. See if you can find one locally.. if not I've got the fifth reserve. π1 point

You're right Geoff, my wonderful wife. The walk would have been the same number of steps without her, the views just as far, but nothing like as enjoyable.1 point

Nc 500 is brilliant, did it last year and got the weather spot on, used my l200 , should of had the westy, one point I would make is plan your journey fuel stops with a small tank could be tricky , and as much fun as it may seam keep speed down and to your own side of the road I was lucky to be in a pick up and could see the donuts in campers and flyers coming stay safe1 point

Weather's looking a bit 50/50 on wet or dry at the moment. Looking like a wet start is likely at least, so might fit the mighty Rain Experts. π Have watched the briefing. π1 point

I agree to a certain extent in that the roads are better on the West but when I did it I wanted to do the full NC500 and do Dunrobin Castle, Walligoe steps, John O Groats. Did all that in a day first (so doing the trip / route in reverse) and then spend longer on the next stages which are better driving roads. Also when starting from Inverness and going on the back road around the Moray Firth donβt divert off at Muir of Ord but keep on going through Dingwall and even take the back road to Evanton and over Struie and come out at Tain (Glenmorangie). That way the road is a lot more interesting.1 point
