  2. Four weeks ago I decided to do something about the broken rear number plate on my '89 SE. Closer inspection revealed that the spare wheel had dropped because the bracket had sagged. Well you who have had this happen will know that the bracket is not very strong and the weld had broken and it had pulled out of the chassis. So to investigate the broken chassis bracket out came the bootbox. Then the fuel tank. The bracket cannot be easily welded because the body goes underneath it. Decision taken to remove the bracket remains and run without a spare. With the tank out the rear chassis, suspension and axle were revealed in all their tattyness. I dismantled the rear suspension including the 4 radius rods , panhard rod and the spring/damper units. Suspension components and the chassis members were derusted, coated and painted. The axle was derusted and painted in situ. The old bushes were removed by the hacksaw through the outer sleeve method. New metalastic bushes from Westfield were fitted with the use of M12 Allthread and suitable sockets and spacers. New dampers and springs ordered via Damperman, great service from Spax. New nyloc nuts and BZP washers were used throughout. Everything reassembled and loaded up with water containers to set the ride height. Luckily the spare wheel recess hadn't been too badly rubbed by the tyre and rubbing compound and elbow grease have restored the shine to an acceptable level. So with the rear done it would make sense to do the front wouldn't it. So more metalastic bushes ordered front end in the air, nose cone off. More of the same replacing the wishbone bushes and also replaced the bottom ball joints which in this cars case are the 4 bolt Cortina ones. The top ball joints were good. New rack mounts from Retro Bolt on eBay. All painted and reassembled , ride height set and while I was at it an oil and filter change as well. All that remains is for next month to come round and I'll tax it again. None of the work was particularly difficult but I have used muscles that haven't been used spannering for a good while. I hope and expect the ride to be much improved over what it was as the evidence is that the bushes and dampers were the thirty year old originals.

  3. Well I've been cutting my own hair for years now... so took the the lockdown opportunity to grow it till it got annoying then shaved some of it off to pay homage to the late great Keith Flint, my youngest wasn't too impressed though !

Here's a quick example I threw together to give an idea of what can be done: One aspect that isn't realistic, I've just wound up the volts (Who wouldn't 😉 ) The bulbs didn't fail! Have fun!

  7. Hello All, Jase here hoping you are well and keeping safe. Im just looking for more feedback on the shop if possible, since the lock down started i have spent a lot of time doing some changes to layout ie new headers and sections to hopefully space things out more and to save time in searching through hundreds on parts and also updating images and descriptions to help identify certain parts. Approximately 200 Westfield parts have been added across all sections so if anything is missing PLEASE shout so i can get it added ( i have fw hood frame to add). We have received feedback in the past with regards to Chesil parts appearing when searching, this is something that will change but delayed slightly. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated good or bad so i can put anything wrong right. Many thanks and take care all. Jase

  10. Sainz will be fast, but interesting to see how him and LeClerc stack up in similar machines. Danny Ric in a Merc-powered McLaren will be good too, and him and Norris will make it the smiliest team in the paddock. I think that is the end of the road for Seb though.

  20. Bikes have a bit more space than F1 cars on track to do that though don't they.. I'm not dissing bike racing.. in fact I do watch the odd one now and again. Was really into it years ago.. Rainy Schwantz and Doohan era. (sp??) Anyway here's another that's just popped up.. Nothing special but what a cracking camera angle. Bit of a whoopsy at about 4:50 Nice circuit. 😎

  21. Easyouts is what I call them. When they work, they're great. When they don't they're a b*****r! I had an epic fail trying to remove a few exhaust studs from a Cossie head. One of them was stuck enough that it snapped the easyout which put a dampener on proceedings The lesson was, don't buy cheap easyouts, and be prepared for "alternative outcomes"...

  26. One of the things my Dad taught me was to run candle wax on the screw before fitting it so that it would go in easier and reduce the risk of splitting the wood(50years plus ago). I know that modern screws are coated to replicate this and maybe the wood retains this lubricant and just needs a bit of heat to liven it up, could also be just the expansion of the screw widening the wood slots. For the broken screws we usually used a hollow plug drill bit over the screw to remove, then glued in some dowel to replace and fixed with longer screws.

  27. So I've been trying a few of the suggestions today, with a high success rate. A combination of whacking the screws then heating with a soldering iron. I will have to be a little less enthusiastic with the hammer on the other doors which still have the double glazed unit. In the photo you can see the old soldering iron which I inherited from my Dad. It takes a while to heat up, but the large tip helps and after 5 minutes or so I found that the screws would turn with relatively little effort - almost as if they had been greased. I used some flux and little bit of solder to improve heat-transfer contact with the screw head. When I removed the iron and inserted the screwdriver bit, I noticed some solder was pushed out. This might have also helped with the damaged cam-out screw head which I thought was probably a lost cause. I'll turn my attention to the broken screws this afternoon, and how I am going to plane down the sides of the doors. This is something I need to get right first time, as while my doors are much smaller than No1 Piccadilly, the glass is 1.8m x 0.4m and with the hardwood frame it is very heavy. The old rule of thumb, or a penny gap all round, is what I am aiming for. I'll remove 2mm from top and bottom of both doors, and 1.5mm from the hinge sides (and the hinge recess by 1.5mm).

  32. @A-Plan Insurance THATCHAM I'm confused as when I last asked about multi car, I was told that policys are individual but the more you insure the more discount you would get on individual policys. Is that right or do you now have multi policys. I'm now worried I'm over paying Tin top Inc business Mrs W's daily Camper Westfield Caravan All insured via A-Plan

  39. When the forums were free to post: It had good information but you often had to wade through a sea of rubbish, sniping, sarcasm, abuse and idiots to find it. Fine people were put off by the boorish, childish behaviour of a few keyboard warriors who thought they had the right to say anything because they were “entertaining “. Genuine requests for assistance were met with unhelpful replies like “do a search”, putting them off from every asking or contributing anything again. It was less about Westfields and more like a boys locker room. There was a lot of posting - and at least 50% of it was unrelated tripe. The club was losing money hand over fist paying to run a forum full of people and non-members with little or no interest in anything but being irresponsible children in a sandbox. Forum moderators were kept busy every day. The forums were littered with spam and scam. After the forum was for paid club members: Not only was the good information there, the rubbish stopped contaminating it, making it easier to get answers. Many more people felt able to post questions and give answers without fear of being abused. The idjit factor dropped continuously until we had the finest, nicest, friendliest bunch of petrolheads I’ve ever had the pleasure to know. Nobody brushes your question off with “do a search” - quite the opposite, they’re eager to help. It’s a forum first and foremost about Westfields with a bit of fun. Gentlemen, ladies and children can safely use the forums. Club membership doubled within 18 months and it’s finances improved drastically. Forum moderators rarely need to intervene. Scam and spam has been wiped out. I’m the first to accept pay to post isn’t for everyone. I was sceptical when it was first proposed. I’m happy to say I was wrong and my scepticism was misplaced. It was absolutely the right thing to do, Clubs aren’t for everyone. There aren’t one size fits all solutions. But the WSCC comes pretty damn close. Yes, membership costs £27.50 to renew every year, but I’ve saved that a dozen times over with insurance discounts, special offers, discounted parts, fixing the car myself instead of paying for garages and many other things. Membership is pretty much like putting money back in your pocket if you use it as intended. I’d also point out that the forums (apart from Members Only section) are searchable and viewable via Google or other search engines. The club didn’t have to do that... but it did. There will always be those who think everything on the Internet should be free. I’ve found that things that are free usually come at a cost, one way or another, or are free because they’re worthless. It is said that a sceptic is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. I always try to do my best to prove sceptics of the WSCC wrong, and the actions of my fellow members do that loud and clear every day and in millions of ways.
