I dunno if we should let it spread, looking at the data it's tough to call, and the spread is hard to control. Viruses mutate and this one is no exception - the more people it infects, the more mutations, and the harder it is to stop / slow down. The modelling so far shows there will be a spike - with number of critical patients way over what the NHS can handle - we are just delaying it with the current measures. The delay beween full lockdown in Hubei and maximum number of cases was 12 days. We don't have that same level of 'control' as the Chinese employed yet so we still have exponential growth in cases for the next two weeks at least... We need to get transmission rate below 1 to start reversing the trend. These are the measures estimated to be required, and their effectiveness: So we have done quite a lot of that and should be under 0.5 now, and thus new cases declining - only time will tell if it's working... Further info here for anyone interested: https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-the-hammer-and-the-dance-be9337092b56 This is also really interesting - shows how much effect small changes on transmission rate, speed of intervention, intubation time, etc have on the overall rates of spread and death: http://gabgoh.github.io/COVID/index.html With our first infection on 15th Feb, first death on 5th March, serious interventions to try and bring transmission rate under 0.5 on 24th March, we have done pretty well I think having learned from others. Personally I think the crux of it is to apply common sense. 'Stay at home' is a good message to the general population though!4 points

Regarding Furlough, its a great gesture by the Govt BUT the money still has to be paid out first by the company, and then claimed back - no portal for application to get the money back is up and running yet and the timescale is still in doubt too.... With the recent self employed gesture in addition, this is only going to slow down the process further.....this is an extremely difficult time for any business and a large number of businesses give a living to many people with out necessarily making a fortune for their owners.... Its during a time like this that we should all appreciate how lucky we are - free to go and do pretty much what we want and when we want, and its a shame that too many people are still taking the pi55 walking dogs miles from home after driving there, bike rides of 20 miles etc, sports bikes congregating on petrol forecourts etc when in all honesty, all of us want to do things we enjoy but KNOW WE SHOULDN'T currently - why do these people think they are more deserving than the rest of us - selfish IMHO... Stay safe and well everyone, and hope we all get through this.... Mart.2 points

My wife is currently reorganising her wing of North tees hospital to cope with the influx about to hit her. Shifts have gone to 12hr. A&E being moved to other non critical areas still with same cover tho. But now it keeps segregation better. Even things like screens are going up on receptions... I've hardly seen her since it started. She's just washed out. And with her granddaughter still being on the hold button for her heart operation due to people using critical care etc... So maybe you can see why I'm passionate about people not flouting segregation rules... Others are paying for their selfishness2 points

Thanks Carlie The chap i spoke to did not mention it and to be honest if i am moving away from A Plan then I think I will research laid up cover with my new insurer as that would seem to be most sensible Thank you for checking in Ian2 points

I'm in no position to lecture anyone but common sense prevailing going out in your westy is going to attract attention for 2 things, attract the attention of the police and attract the attention of the public who are immediately going to think your just out for a joy ride. Setting an example will encourage people to follow the rules. I know that there are thousand jobs still working but giving people the wrong message that it's OK to swan about for a drive with no real cause is irresponsible. There's even a government advert on the TV saying "going for a walk miles from home - NOT ESSENTIAL" If your car breaks down or has an accident with.... Whatever... Someone has to then go out that didn't need to.2 points

Iv'e had this response from Silverstone. Early Bird period extended In light of the current situation, we have extended our Early Bird period so that it now applies until the end of April. We hope to be able to welcome you to our 30th anniversary event this year. If you’re a member of a car club, you still have until the end of May to book your display package, but from the end of April our Standard rather than Early Bird prices will apply. I guess they are hoping that it still goes ahead, I hope so......2 points

Stick with it Scott and remember this will end. I understand what you mean about feeling at risk or mortal but thats just a physiological reaction to the situation we are facing. Try to distract yourself with something all consuming like tracing family history etc. We are here for anyone who needs to talk or just help get through the day so call me whenever you need.1 point

Thanks Jon, I have read some of the blogs but as a new member not had that much time.....until now 😊 Moving the engine forward is the simplest solution and resolves all of the gearbox clearance issues in one go. On my own car I intend using and have bought Lotus 7 engine mounts and will revise how the gearbox in mounted too.1 point

Not much to say except hurry up and bring back track days! oh as expected in these situations we are seeing the best of the best people that makes me proud...and the worst of the worst..that makes me 😠1 point

Totally agree Adam, despite WFH being a nightmare for me (trying to run engineering teams remotely) I'm loving the change in tempo outside - as much as I'm missing being able to drive the WF, I hope it makes everyone realise we really don't need to be travelling around in the car every spare second and can enjoy our own company a little more.1 point

Fully appreciate why they are shut and applaud the action as I understand it is because the employer cannot guarantee social distancing. I work by myself selling hand made goods over the internet. There is therefore no reason to stop but I rely on materials delivered by - guess who - Travis Perkins. Who is going to supply the businesses who are COVID 19 compliant with materials? Or does the whole country grind to a stop? As far as self employment help, this is for those directly affected by the restrictions. Technically I am not, as running out of raw materials is not in itself a result of the restrictions, so help is not likely to be forthcoming. I know it is selfish in this emergency but my family’s sole income is likely to dry up and there seems to be little I can do about it. Rant over. Back to gardening now. I hate gardening.1 point

It's an almost impossible judgement call at the moment but will become easier as we get more data. Too much lock down and the immunity does not build and the population tire and economic consequences become more serious and impacting. Too little and you get panic and swamped medical care. The risk is if left to peoples interpretation it won't be managed well and that is what is probably happening at the moment. My sense is that the economic impacts are already much greater than the government have forecast / wanted. I think we will look back and conclude that the 80% for employees will be seen as a bit too generous and will have accelerated the economic shutdown at a rate quicker than the government wanted. I understand in Germany it is set at 65% for comparison. The mutation has been seen to have happened already but apparently will not affect immunity or vaccine development. Whatever happens stay safe and united.1 point

That had me howling with laughter. I never had an engine crane when I was doing jobs on the side and used the rope method to lift engines out of many cars and refit. I was as described a burly chap, the young kids part was played by my then girlfriend (now my wife)1 point

Just had my quote and it hasn't gone up at all, it is the same for my motorhome as well. I am in the older age spectrum so perhaps that has a bigger bearing these days1 point

This post is specific to the gearbox mount issues so posted here. The advantage, if one can call it that, for self isolation I've been in the garage today and fitted the engine and gearbox. Westfield's technical department did point me in the direction of the separate steel plate that bolts up under the chassis so I knew what to expect. I made a template of the underside of the modified standard "Spridget" gearbox mount and decided to sit the gearbox in, mark the plate, remove it, drill to the template and re-fit. Bearing in mind I left a bigger clearance on the gearbox mount than the single reference in the manual to how the gearbox fits, it doesn't work. The gearbox mount on the left side hits the aluminium skin of the tunnel, there is insufficient clearance for the mount to sit between the lower tunnel tubes so wont sit on the plate, the starter motor cover on the bellhousing is wedged against the footwell vertical tube and when I sort all this, the oval casting on the left side of the gearbox will sit on the lower tunnel side tube so the mount still wont sit on the separate gearbox plate! Failing that it is perfect. Firstly, I intend modifying the Spridget mount again giving clearance and removing the vertical face on the left side which on a Sprite bolts through the side of the tunnel. I'll need to weld in a plate to replace the lost strength. Next I'll cut more out of the bottom of the mount where the manual does not cover this correctly. These modifications will allow me to move the tail of the gearbox to the left and hopefully the starter motor cover will clear the footwell. Finally, I'll cut the oval casting on the side of the gearbox so the mount will sit down properly. I recall somewhere reading what that oval casting was for but cannot remember, anyone here know? I guess Westfield will be closed so cannot ask them, it is slightly disappointing that being the Sprite gearbox was the original choice for these kits the fitment is not covered that well in the manual. The god news is this is all reference for when I restore my own car.1 point

We are only wearing for essential shopping trips and washing after ever trip. Agree the limitations but even if the benefit is tiny it’s something. Reports from Spain indicate anyone out without a mask can cause concern for others. My wife used to make wedding dresses so we have plenty of spare material, may even add a veil.1 point

After going to Silverstone on a track day my R1R's where well scrubbed, and ware across each block indicating they may not be the best tyre to hold together for me on the track. I've bought some R888r's for track days and wanted some wheels.. I decided to "up-cycle" the wheels which came on my car and have been replaced with TD 1.2's. Over the last few weeks In the evenings I have been stripping the old wheels. They where pug 205 speedline wheels. The finish was a sort of gunmetal metallic with the texture of 400 grit. Regardless of the finish and marks the paint was a total b***d to get off. I used paint stripper, an automated shot blaster and a sandblasted. As it was wet paint and I'm powdercoating I didn't want the paint to bubble so I had to get it all off. To be honest I got almost all off it off the fronts but was less bothered at the back. They are only wheels! ... this lunchtime I sent them though the paint oven twice and powder coated them. Basically a light coating of powder onto the cold wheel. Then though the oven, while still really hot add some more powder and sending back though the oven to cure. They turned out ok. Our oven holes are designed to fit the largest damper conceived. It's little challenge lining the wheels up to go though Its 220 degrees in their! a tight squeeze though the "S"es1 point
