Really good! Neil was fantastic, I highly recommend BBR for anything - they were brilliant. We started the day at 162bhp, which is a big step up from the previous print out on the hks kit set up at 136bhp. Neil worked his magic and over the course of the day, got it to 189bhp and 180 lbft torque at the wheels. It now drives sublimely, it's so so nice! It's exactly what it should have been from the factory. And a really nice smooth torque curve to boot! I'm a very happy chap. More than I hoped for and the perfect set up for me - I'm super pleased I managed to achieve this on my own (with the epic addition of Frankenpipe from Martin!!) and really looking forward to some sunny drives now!4 points

Great stuff Marcus! I'm doing this same route in September, so will be keen to hear how you get on 😁 best of luck and enjoy!1 point

203 at fly and 189 at wheels don't really correspond... normally losses are quoted at 20% ish. With 7 psi / half a bar of boost I think you're normally more like 1.5x the original power? With a proper ECU I think these engines make about 130-140 at the fly so it's on the money with 200, just 190 at the hubs seems high. Anyway I'm just blurting out thoughts, feel free to ignore me, it's how it drives that matters!1 point

Good luck Marcus and team; I hope reach your goals and I hope folks will be hitting the Just Giving page...1 point

I think they look fantastic. Planning to save up and buy a pair to make some doors complete with windows which will have much better view than std .1 point

Although we will be in the area that weekend (heading for the fantastic Glamis classic show), it will be in the camper. Have a great run, and we will look out for you. Dave.1 point

Oh what a small world it is ! @Julie Hall - AO Representative, Peak District AO At least Tracy got past the Z3 and SLK before Matlock, but she did wave and smile when we past her later ( friendly folk in the peak district😉)1 point

Short of pestilence, we're planning to do this run. Would be really nice if you could arrange nice weather this time, last year was a bit cold and soggy!1 point

It's the gate house to Ardverikie Castle, which was Glen Bogle in the Monarch of the Glen tv series. The gate house was seen in several episodes. Hope you enjoy your stay Chris. I'll bring along a spare alternator:-) I'm ok for the run on the 7th. We're back from holiday the day before, so fingers crossed that the car starts!1 point

Thanks all for your input. helpful advice. First job, which may be a winter project, is to build a garage to keep it dry. That'll give me time to ponder the sort of car to look for and hopefully pop along to a couple of meets. I do like the idea of getting the speed be right from the off. I may not be after the fastest car on the block. But at the same time, I don't want to be itching for more power from day 1. But lets face it. I reckon there are very few people who buy these cars who aren't continuously thinking of the next upgrade!1 point

Its very true that there is no substitute for outright power, but don't forget the original ethos of the 7 type car, where adding lightness does add power, and a well set up car with optimum dampers, springs, geometry settings and correct rubber can and does make a difference? Engine tuning can get very expensive very quickly and the tuners talk in thousands, not hundreds.... Corner weighting and geometry set up (at a competant, proven source), could be a much cheaper alternative? There must be an optimum power figure for a well set up car where any more power available isn't really that useable unless on a fast circuit? I remember years ago watching one of the Gwynne sons at a Castle Coombe rally day giving passenger rides around the circuit in a Nova IIRC , and blasting past Skylines that had 3 times the power..... Grenade thrown........Ill wait for the bang lol.... Mart.1 point

It's tripmass eve, so all our cars are cleaned, fueled and raring to go in the moring. @Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Secretary and I did some good shakedown miles in the Peaks yesterday. Looks like we're going to get mildly moist on our way to hull in the morning, followed by death by sunshine! time to pack my bag. Nite, nite. Ian1 point

I bought my Zetec-powered Westie as an antidote to chasing power. I took my last car from 220bhp as standard to just shy of 500bhp. It was great fun, but I found myself having to travel extremely quickly to get a buzz out of it. I now have about a third of the power, and about a third of the weight - the difference is that I don't need to be doing 150+ to feel like I'm going quickly Anyway, straights are only there to join the corners up and you don't need power for corners...1 point

Thanks for organising and leading the run Robin and thanks to Geoffrey for capturing the moment when I got out to push my Westy over the speed hump at the Ship only for it to run away and nearly crash into that pick up truck 😁 Barry1 point

Meeting us at Matlock were Ian, Dave, Andy and Becky. Dave was in his new Sigma engined car and very quickly the rumours began of an unfinished Honda project coming up for sale soon as spares or repairs, now that he is realising that FORD is the way forward From there we took a scenic route down the Elton Essess, posed through Bakewell, over Surprise View, up Winnats Pass and finally down Mam Nick to land us at The Rambler Inn, Edale. There was a large Lotus gathering in the Peak District today and, much like the other week when it was the TVR's, we waved at all the Lotus cars coming in the opposite direction. At a guess there were 40 or 50 of them. It was a twisty route on fairly big roads so we made decent progress and arrived just in time for the pub to open, resulting in an empty car park. The best parking spot in front of the pub. Bottoms up Lovely views from our table in the garden area We attracted a crowd and Ian soon became crowd control manager Andy's car had a little hiccup at The Rambler but with experts on hand it was soon restarted and after lunch we took another twisty and scenic route past the Monsal Head Viaduct, back through Bakewell, up the Elton Essess, over the Via Gellia to bring us to the Blue Lagoon cafe for cake. We got the prime parking spot again. Boy, do they know how to make cakes. Andy and Becky guarding the cakes Dave's exhaust is on the drivers side and seems a long way off the car, Glen says it is 'two feet' away, that's my 2 feet. Chatter was exciting with Dave and Ian about to go to Austria in their Westfield's, Andy and Becky about to go to Devon in theirs. The rest of the conversation went a bit wayward, practice for the pending lads week away I think. Ian gave us a smile as he left so did Dave Thanks for coming everyone and I hope all you folks that couldn't make it had a good day, we look forward to seeing you all next time xxx1 point

Back from holiday where my brain had enough time to think and plan for mapping on Tuesday. Main thing that was troubling me was that I haven't actually driven BRG since I did all the work, it's only been turned over and idled. Given that I'm driving it up to BBR for the mapping, I kinda need to know it'll be ok the get there... So, plan of action - take it for a spin and keep fingers crossed!! So on this nice warm day, where do I go - the park? The forest? The hills for some photos? Nope. Tesco, of course! 🤣 It all went well, no major issues to report. Exhaust leak and rattle all gone (now noticing an exhaust rattle coming from the back box, will investigate that later). Drove smoothly apart from an intermittently rough idle, but most importantly, the turbo is now making lots of excellent noises! Whoosh chachachachacha It's definitely a lot faster! Boost is showing as up to 8psi now, and that's only at about three quarter throttle and not using all the revs (my car is annoyingly a late 95 model and has a rare issue of the rev gauge not working with the ECU, there's a bridge that needs to be soldered to get it working which BBR will do for me). Bear in mind that it was only making about 4psi before (peaked at 6 but rarely) - so that's double the boost before it's been mapped!!! Brought it home, gave it a wash and then loaded up with tools and spares ready for Tuesday. Oooh, shiny... Tucked away back in the garage. The seller gave me a car cover for it, he said it was just something to keep the dust off in the garage, but it's a custom fit indoor car cover with a nice little Mazda logo on it. A really nice touch I thought. Sleep well Project BRG, Tuesday will be an interesting day...1 point

Big thanks for the guys organising the weekend. Met lots of new people ( let’s face it you were all new to me!!!) and everyone was really friendly and we had a good few days driving. Few pics of the weekend below. Expected a few more but the “photographer” next to me was busy texting his mates most of the time 😊 Weather was great all the way back to Spean and glad we took the long way around. Just changed my phone and not all the photos have backed up properly so they will come in two parts.1 point

Off to sea in a pea-green (decked) boat! Eight Westfields, a Quantum and an MX-5 - oh, and a Tiger (just pulling your leg Jim 😋), on the ferry from Portavadie, Argyle to Tarbet, Kintyre. Lovely weekend, fun roads, neat campsite, good food, great chat, some new faces (to us at least) and the usual clan - what could be better!1 point

My advice is making them faster is pretty expensive. So get that bit right from the off.1 point

You’d not want that unless you have a shed load of van tyres with you! 🤣1 point

I did one about 5 summers ago also at Donnington just weeks after I'd bought my car. I'd certainly been very keen to do another although I'd be looking for more of a tuition session rather than jump-in, quick lap of the course, jump-out again experience I had. Just my own thoughts but if the instructers started with a sweeping curve of cones and encouraged us to improve our basic skills on that then perhaps the weaving slalom course may be a bit more achievable. I think a "members-only" day could accommodate a bit of tuition rather than my previous experience when the instructors had to deal with a mix of people most of whom (apart from me and Andy Lowe) had never even sat a Westfield previously.1 point
