It's tripmass eve, so all our cars are cleaned, fueled and raring to go in the moring. @Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Secretary and I did some good shakedown miles in the Peaks yesterday. Looks like we're going to get mildly moist on our way to hull in the morning, followed by death by sunshine! time to pack my bag. Nite, nite. Ian6 points

I bought my Zetec-powered Westie as an antidote to chasing power. I took my last car from 220bhp as standard to just shy of 500bhp. It was great fun, but I found myself having to travel extremely quickly to get a buzz out of it. I now have about a third of the power, and about a third of the weight - the difference is that I don't need to be doing 150+ to feel like I'm going quickly Anyway, straights are only there to join the corners up and you don't need power for corners...5 points

After a cracking day out with @Weekend Warrior and @si_salisbury up to SkegVegas and then a play over the Wolds of Lincolnshire, I’ve come to the conclusion I need more power. Alternatively, I’m going to need new friends. Anybody got a turbo kit for a Zetec going free??2 points

I don’t see a single thing Boris has accomplished of value in office. Not one. He’s good at spending money on things that aren’t needed like millions on a sculpture outside the London Olympic stadium, a cable car over the Thames that loses money hand over fist, and used water cannons that were illegal to use, refurbished at huge expense and resold for scrap at a massive loss. The only thing he can do successfully is run a campaign. That does not make one a good PM. i expect my politicians to be liars and con artists. That’s normal. It’s just that BoJo isn’t even good at that.2 points

@MattV if you find new friends you will half my friends list, I will adjust the throttle stop on my pedal. 😂2 points

They don’t need to be really but we’ve got what we asked for... massive heavy wheels so need lots of compression damping to control the undamped mass. Big engines, massive cog filled gearboxes so heavy easy to package struts rather than expensive multi linked suspension. Total lost of tyre compliance with mega low wide profiles and runflats. Motoring journalists slate cars for not having as stiff chassis, or being slower than the last model on the ring. Big power, loads of grip, massive brakes mean big forces so all the bushing is really stiff. Fat anti roll bars which help with roll but also take away the comfort and traction merits of independent suspension. Stiff “sports seats” Low ride heights meaning to compensate stiff suspension. Direct mounted racks for precise steering feel...... the list goes on...2 points

Hooray, my brake lights are working - but have nooo idea what I did to achieve it! Washed the car when we got home, then set about with the multi-meter to find the issue. Tested a few things for power and continuity, wiggled a few wires, unplugged a few connectors, replaced a (tested) good fuse for another one and hey presto, Bob's your uncle, lights working - but none the wiser!2 points

UPDATE 22.05.2020 The camp site has confirmed that it will be closed until July 2020 and therefore, our planned weekend of Friday 19th June 2020 to Sunday 21st June 2020 has been cancelled. The plan is now to move our weekend on to next year, the new dates being Friday 18th June 2021 to Sunday 20th June 2021. I have booked these dates for us and I can confirm that the previously announced accommodation listings will be the same for next year so, if you've been told what hut/lodge you're in for 2020, it'll be the same for 2021. I am assuming that those that have paid will approve of this however, if you decide that you no longer wish (or cannot) go in 2021, you can contact Rena for a refund. Otherwise, the camp site will note your accommodation as paid for to 2021. PLEASE let me know if you decide not to attend next year and have accommodation allocated, as I will then be able to offer it to someone else. UPDATE 06.03.2020 To all those who have noted an interest and have been allocated a hut/lodge (see list below), you can now call the campsite and pay for your booking! So that the staff know who you are, please state tell them your name and that you are part of the "Robert Reid Group booked in for 19-21 June" and mention your hut/lodge. The number to cal is: 01838 400251 To those that have not yet noted an interest but would like to come along, hut 16 (and two lodges) are still available in the area that the other huts/lodges are. Obviously, if these become unavailable, you can always take another hut somewhere on the site. The site is relatively small so you won't be far away from the shenanigans! Hi ALL Yes, yes, I know we're talking 2020 but hear me out! Those that have been following the latest updates with our new venue for the annual Clan McWesty gathering on the other post, will have seen that we've had a very successful trip and the site has some major plus points over Applecross ie on-site BBQ pits, shop, communal kitchen/dining room/lounge .. and, new unexplored roads to ummm, explore! It has been decided that we'll be returning next year and as the site is very popular (on the West Highland Way), I've been advised to get our note of interest penciled in for 2020 now! Site info can be found here: https://www.sruc.ac.uk/info/120216/strathfillan_wigwams Look, as I said I know it's really early to be talking about this but the regular attendees will (should) have blocked out the 3rd weekend in June every year up to 2030 already so most will want to show their interest as soon as possible. My intention is to start a name list on here and keep Rena updated on a regular basis as to numbers and requirements ie hut or lodge, with a view to start paying deposits early in 2020. I've made some assumptions on the list below but IF EVERYONE COULD REPLY WITH YOUR NOTE OF INTEREST and I'll add you as we go along. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE NAME LIST IS ONLY FOR THOSE WISHING TO NOTE INTEREST FOR ACCOMMODATION. Armed with the additional knowledge from this year, these are the following huts and lodges that I'd suggest are the ones to take as this will keep the group nicely together: Huts 14-16 (we should book 17-20 first and book 14-16 for any latecomers. 14-16 are still very close to 17-20 so you wouldn't be miles away from the group) Huts 17-20 Hut 21 (en suite) Lodges - Firewater, Beaver, Bald Eagle, Buffalo NAME LIST Rab (bombero) - Beaver Jim & Jean (JimM) - Hut 17 Dave & Jen (Davep1) - Hut 18 Brad & Diane (BigSkyBrad) - Firewater Gary (Alfascozzesi) - Hut 20 Jim & Laura (Jonsey) - Hut 15 Brian (H.7) - Hut 21 John (Hornet600) - Hut 14 Colin & Leanna (Colsum) - Hut 191 point

Having visited Le Mans on two excelent road trips in 2017 & 2018, it feels rather strange being at home this year. Especially seeing posts on here and social media of others doing Le Mans 2019. On Tues 25th June, I depart from home with @Greenstreak-Andy D @Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Secretary & @westyjord87 joining me in the Peak District. We're crossing from Hull to Zeebrugge, driving to Dusseldorf and then taking the night train to Innsbruch. We've then got 3 days of Alp pass blatting planned, folowed by a drive home via the Porsche Museum in Stuggart and the Ring. We'll try to update as we travel, though can't guarantee the tale to be told as well as those on the recent Switzerland trip! Other than Dave's car still completing winter upgrades and Jordan's got no front discs, we're ready!1 point

The main road to Newtonmore passes this place. I didn’t know you could rent it all the times I have driven past 😲 I am up for this and will probably drive up to Kingussie, meet you there then double back and around.1 point

I'm a possible for this, Gary, very much weather-dependent. It's a 360 mile round trip which is about as far as I'd like to travel in a day in a car where the tyre sidewalls provide the only suspension. I'll confirm during the week before. Cheers, Brian.1 point

I think I'm unlikely for this run, Gary. Just plugged it in to the satnav and it's a 533 mile round trip 😮 for me. Don't have the time to make a weekend of it by splitting the run so will just wave to you from a (considerable) distance 👋🤣 Cheers, Brian.1 point

@H.7 nah, you're in first, and if you're travelling one-up, it'll suit you better. At least Firewater is a known quantity for us.1 point

Its very true that there is no substitute for outright power, but don't forget the original ethos of the 7 type car, where adding lightness does add power, and a well set up car with optimum dampers, springs, geometry settings and correct rubber can and does make a difference? Engine tuning can get very expensive very quickly and the tuners talk in thousands, not hundreds.... Corner weighting and geometry set up (at a competant, proven source), could be a much cheaper alternative? There must be an optimum power figure for a well set up car where any more power available isn't really that useable unless on a fast circuit? I remember years ago watching one of the Gwynne sons at a Castle Coombe rally day giving passenger rides around the circuit in a Nova IIRC , and blasting past Skylines that had 3 times the power..... Grenade thrown........Ill wait for the bang lol.... Mart.1 point

Thanks Rab. I've put 19-21 June 2020 in my diary so aiming to make the whole weekend next year. If no-one's booked 'em all already, I'd appreciate putting my name on either the en-suite wigwam or one of the lodges. Cheers, Brian.1 point

Just for the record, didn't the water cannon get outlawed by a certain Theresa May as Home Secretary after they were bought? Oh, and the garden bridge (admittedly a vanity project anyway), get scrapped by that nice Mr Khan more as a purge of the Boris era than anything? If Boris was such a useless mayor in London (a very Labour voting city) why was he voted in for a second term?1 point

I have had a joke with my work mates about fitting Nos to mine, I haven’t seen or heard about a Westfield with nos. 🔥☠️1 point

I know, I'm always the same,, when you first get your new toy it's great, few months later and you get used to things you want more power and speed, that's why I went for the remap and had the speed limiter switched off. Goes up and over 165 mph now(not on the public highway)1 point
-
Thanks for the suggestion @litcoat, but I fear you’re part of the problem too 😄! Managing to gain 50bhp from a remap would suggest you already had plenty to start with....! Alas, I fear my poor 1.8 zetec is already at the point where extra is going to be big money (rolling road shows 150bhp). Anything further is going to involve internals and a cheque book! I’ll just have to sneak round to @si_salisbury and @Weekend Warrior in the middle of the night and superglue a bung under the accelerator pedals!1 point

Glad to hear you got your brake light sorted and I know exactly how you fixed them .. you "wiggled a few wires". That's the standard operational procedure! Great weekend and to think that I almost never went! Love our new 'Applecross' and here's to exploring new roads!1 point

Today I have been mainly joining the ranks of two Westfield owners! Home again after collecting it from a friend who’d decided to sell. Now I can stop making myself ill trying to get the “beast” ready in time. It’s a car not totally unknown to the club, though hasn’t been seen much for a few years. A lovely crisp, revy and light, so very light, 1.6 Sigma engined car, that’s a hoot to drive. Will need a few jobs doing before I sell it after the Honda’s done, ut it’s a cracker in the mean time.1 point
