What a brilliant day. We went to a friend of Garys who has a small Whisky distillery on his home. He also owns a brilliant pub and a fabulous museum. Gunter made us feel so welcome and he even made us all lunch. Gary signed a lot of whiskey barrels that he had made years ago and I felt really proud for him. We then had a blast into the mountains and myself and Dave headed into Italy. It was absolutely brilliant and we just went exploring without satnavs for a few hours. Anyway here are a few pictures.3 points

Day 8 of our great adventure 220 miles and a train ride. In glorious sunshine, we cracked off and did 5 brilliant passes we started off climbing and descending the Stuben pass circling around we climbed up above the snow line on the San Bernardino pass stopping at restoranti ospizio taking all the back roads we dropped way down into the valley rounding around airolo we climbed the passo del chiara and passo del lucomagno then finally over the oberalp pass to the train at realp and onto our hotel at Obergesteln Words really can’t describe the beauty that we saw today or the way the Westies were received by all the locals wherever we have been and today was Switzerland Italy Switzerland Italy Switzerland..... brilliant2 points

Hi all I'm looking at driving up from Cornwall and driving the NC 500 . I'm planning to drive up to the lake District and stay overnight to break the journey to Inverness and back into to shorter drives. Has anyone drove the NC 500? If so any tips , advice, places to visit and stay , etc would be gratefully received I'm planning on doing this in early August. Thanks in advance1 point

@jonjh1964 Another couple of good Aussie ones are The Castle, and Hercules Returns. For a down-under motoring documentary there's Love the Beast - the aussie actor Eric Bana's go at the Targa Tasmania tarmac rally.1 point

I did say the traffic lights had gone but I noticed on the homeward journey that there was a warning of road works from 28th May!!! I hope the temporary traffic lights are not back in place now? Hopefully we will join you tomorrow.1 point

I'm just back from it too, but did a slightly different route. Started near Dundee, drove across the Cairngorms to Inverness, then around the North Coast but instead of cutting back across to Inverness, went south to Skye instead. That route worked out really well. In terms of things to do, depends on what you're after. If you're into hiking, there are no shortage of places. Can let you know a few of the ones we did. Otherwise, there are a few really cool castles which are well worth a visit. My favourite of these was probably castle Sinclair Gringoe, but there are plenty around. If you're camping, there are no shortage of wild camp spots. If you're self sufficient, I'd actively avoid planning where you're going to stop each night so you have the flexibility if you see something nice to just stop and stay there. Obviously goes without saying to leave no trace afterwards etc. If you want to do a Distillery tour somewhere, that's definitely worth advance booking. I didn't do it far enough ahead and ended up going to a slightly disappointing tour at a new distillery. Other than that, one serious word of warning for that time of year - you will be eaten alive by midges. I went in May for that reason and they arrived half way through my trip.1 point

Just back from doing this a fortnight ago and while I agree with Geoffrey that the best bits are in the North and West coasts I wanted to do the NC500 so we did the full thing. We actually did it in reverse going up the East coast first. There is a route where you go cut out the East coast and go across diagonally to the North which is a good road. All in all the East coast isn’t bad though. All the pictures below are along the East coast on our first day (doing it in reverse). It’s a great trip. We stayed the first night in the Tongue Hotel and then the next in Gairloch. Things I enjoyed seeing where the lighthouse / stacks at Dunnets Bay head, Smoo caves, the many beautiful beaches along the coast. Wanted to stop at the Waligoe steps but drove past the turn off, will have to do another day! I am sure you will love it.1 point

Popped over to the Port Solent Car Meet in Portsmouth this morning, chatting to the Tiger and Caterham owner - Caterham at 40miles on the clock since IVA. Its a 420R model and the owner Martin let me have a sit in it, much bigger than I thought it would be, and just lovely inside and out, but also £42k!!1 point

Hi Gary, I'm OK for Bo'ness again, but like John, Ballater and 9:00am start is too far / early for me. I'll send reg number via txt. Jim1 point

Grabbed a shot of the new carbon scuttle and pedal box cover - note the nice neat battery wiring - previously, there were about five earth leads flailing around, but I've joined them all behind the scuttle, so there's only a single beefy earth cable to the battery for the chassis harness. I also tweaked the fuseboxes, so that they were both fore-aft, as having them at right-angles to each other offended my OCD....1 point
