Went for a brisk 2hr blat this morning to test out my new carbon can .I painted the stainless Extension piece and the Down pipe with heat resistant stove paint and I’m more than happy than the way it turned out . I also swapped the aero screen and fitted my new taller windscreen from the sport 250 .It May only be 50mm taller but what a difference no more frame in the eyeline3 points

First picture of 2019 for me Went out for a blat this morning and roads were eerily quiet. Was good as also pretty dry . Was heading down a country lane when I saw a stick in the road about 4 ft long, transit coming the other way, flicked it up and missed me by about a foot . So, that was pretty close to wake me up a bit. Had nowhere to go and avoid it and luckily it flew over the wheel arch and behind. So, took it home for a clean as not been done all over Christmas and done a few miles , which is great as usually the weathers rubbish but has been perfect driving in the Westie weather this year. Happy New Year to everyone and have a safe blatting year ahead2 points

I think a lot of it comes down to cost. I'm technically a millennial, though wouldn't call myself one given the choice! The whole 'car being a ticket to freedom' bit still rings true for me - my friends and I all got licences as soon as we possibly could, as we live in a rural area, and so without a car you can't do anything. Not having a car only works if you live in a decent sized city. Nowadays, I still have lots of friends who love cars, of my age and younger, and they are fascinated by the Westfield. A number have said that they would love to build one. They just can't afford it. Motoring is so expensive for young people - the day that my insurance dropped below the £1k mark was a good day indeed, and I was nearly thirty by that point. My brothers insurance on his 4th hand Ford Ka when he passed his test was £1600 - more that the value of the car. So my mates can afford a Golf GTI or something similar, with the insurance, but couldn't begin to afford a second car literally as a toy. And that's even before you get to the cost of the tools and equipment required, which most young people just don't have either - as mentioned above, cars and hard to service now, so people don't have those skills or tools. So I think that car culture is very much still there - just look at the proliferation of youtube videos on all things motoring. Everything from supercars, to Project Binky. For a lot of us though, we just have to appreciate from afar, and hope we can afford to join in practically at some point!1 point

Yeah Dave, as soon as you mentioned the issue, I figured it would be a blue book thing, given the club's affiliation. Dotting teas and crossing eyes!1 point

Last Westie drive of the year this morning with the latest Mrs TJ as pax. In true James May , she shouts out ' Buffeting ' at anything above 60 . Complains about not warming up and when I stopped to take the photo on the way home.............................. opened the vent on her side . Didnt hear the end of it all the way back home Still , was a pleasant drive out this morning and an end to 2018 Westying1 point

So, today, I went for a drive in the Westie to meet another WSCC member and Westie builder. Weirdly he lives on one of my regular blat routes and never knew he was 100 yards off the road I travel on quite regularly. Fairly well hidden away from the main road in a very peaceful location................ until I turned up Today I went to see Chris Brading , who is now post - IVA and itching to get the strip down and final things done before enjoying the fruits of his labours, which are well documented in his build thread. Must make a special mention to both the dogs and the tortoise ........ Seems home from home. So, a few questions to which was quickly scribbled over #2 cup of tea . This was mainly because I wasnt expecting to be going to see him today and was a bit of a spur of the moment thing to help with roof and door poppers , so dropped the tools and poppers over to Chris to finish his hood and doors at his own pace. So Chris , full name please ? : Chris Brading Whats your occupation ? : I am a mechanical inspector for Oxford University Estates. Nothing fancy, just a job really. What made you decide to build a Westfield ? Always been into cars and in the early days ( 1982!) had a Mini 1275 GT , which didn't last long , so transplanted it into a Mk2 mini and it all fits the same ! Then marriage , 2 kids, dogs, cats and tortoise and 30 years later , wanted to build a car. Any plans in the car trip wise now its finished ? I did dream about going to the Nurburgring with my son, Ben , but it does look really narrow !!! Any planned mods for the car yet ?: No, not yet. Once the IVA changes are done, need to recover for a bit ! What did you think IVA was like ? Its was very stressful , but it did go really well . Other than a loose lock nut on a rose joint it went through easily. Carbon Fibre ?: Yes, I have the roll bar covers on , so a little bit so far for now. So, how helpful was the forum with your build and questions asked ?: It was a real help . It is the only forum I am on and to be honest, I am obsessed with it . It is a very useful place to be . So, with Chris not able to use his car, I said I would take him out for a loop round in mine, so to keep the enthusiasm going to get his car on the road and chase the DVLA for the reg number. Chris has done a great job on his car , with lots of personal touches , such as rear diagonal carbon ( he didnt mention that in the carbon question ?) rings on the roll bar . He should be understandably proud of his build and I hope he gets many enjoyable miles in the future with it . So, as was getting dark ( was almost when I got home) I bid farewell and hope to meet up when his car gets road legal for a blat out somewhere. Nice to meet you Chris and thanks for the tea's1 point
