  3. You're right - it seems like it should work. I've seen others use them with success so was trying to be open minded. One thing Supertreapp says is that this size is good for 250 hp and that some cars with very high flow (like turbo cars) might be better off going with the larger size. The one I used has 4" discs and the larger size has 5" discs. Doing the rough math tells me that it would flow MUCH better. I suspect that the Honda engine at 8000 rpms flows too much for the system to handle despite the fact that it's within the 250 hp limit and that the 5" system might work well. However - the 5" system weighs much more and the chief thing I was looking for was weight savings and going with the big one wouldn't help me there. Live and learn. dave

  4. So.....I've had some time to get the Supertrapp set up and tested and I thought it would be worth a report. The muffler can be set up a few ways - first you can use the diffuser discs and an open end cap....or second you can use lots of discs and a closed end cap. It seems obvious that the open cap would flow better but also be louder. I set it up first with the open end cap and all 12 of the diffuser discs and then checked the sound level. My race rules say it can make a max of 100 dB at 50 feet so I set up a dB meter 50' of the road and went by in 2nd gear with WOT at 8000+ rpms. It made 105 dB. Far too loud to meet the rules. It was also annoying and just felt way too loud. Next I put the closed end cap on with all 12 discs. This forces all the gases and sound out at 90° and Supertrapp says 12 discs is the same as "full open" (I was more than a bit skeptical that this could be true given the size of the slots between the discs). I drove by my meter the same way as before and the car felt sluggish and I couldn't tell if the tires where spinning (very cold out and limited grip) or if the power was down. I checked the meter and it said a nice low 96 dB but it felt funny so I reset the meter and tried again this time focusing more on how it felt as the rpms climbed. It felt normal until about 5000ish when it suddenly bogged (it wasn't wheel spin) and then suddenly there was a very loud BANG and the revs shot up very suddenly until it hit the limiter and then I dropped the throttle and could hear the sound of metal grinding on the pavement. I pulled over and found that collector Y pipe had blown right off the headers and only the wire going to the O2 sensor kept it from spinning around and being run over by the rear wheel! I think one can safely say that the claim by Supertrapp that 12 discs is the same as being "full open" is complete and utter BS. There was so much back pressure that it blew the system right off the car. Not so good. The muffler weighed less than the claimed weight and the savings would have been nice but it was way too loud or way too restrictive so I came home and removed it and put on the old system and there was much rejoicing. Anyone want to buy a used Supertrapp? I'll make you a good deal on it! dave

  6. Probably better to get it vapour blasted at a place while you stay in and keep warm, then you can wet and dry and polish on the kitchen table and risk death by stare from the Missus

  7. Hi everyone, first post so here goes. Back in the late sixties me and a mate were Mini owners with the obligatory go faster black and white checker tape and a Union Jack. We would often go to Castle Combe to watch the Minis racing, Richard Cooper would be there and also the Lotus Sevens which we would dribble over and dream of ownership one day. Then along came the ladies followed by the kids and all the Lotus dreams went on the back burner, until now. Being in the throws of retirement (67) and looking for something to occupy my days I decided to look at Caterhams and was all set to buy one when a client of mine said he had a Westy in the garage collecting dust if I wanted to have a look, well I did, said Westy was built in 2010 and had 1107 on the clock (not a typo) , It's a SEIW powered by a 2L Duratec, he also has another one, the same but supercharged which he uses for track days. Being able to see through the dust and the grime I could see tremendous potential. Every year it was tested and serviced for the just in case days which rarely come along, so I've bought it and picked it up on Dec 1. The first thing I did was to drive to my trusted mechanic (in the rain) to give it the once over apart from new exhaust manifold gasket and replacing all the perished rubber hoses from the fuel tank he gave it a clean bill of health and considered it a steal. As I am not going to be a sunny day driver it have to have the creature comforts which are perfect and we have managed to put 250 miles on the clock, the response from straightening the right foot is fabulous and it is such a joy (will have to get some silicone around the bottom of the screen though) the best thing of all is that my wife enjoys being a passenger and driving it almost as much as me so it's happy days all round. I live in GL5 if there is any like minded owners close by. Hopefully I will cross paths with some of you during the coming months and will join my local branch in January.

  8. Well it's not as if your car will be slow, even if it 'only' has 225bhp

  10. 48s should match 285bhp nicely

  11. Hi Tim, welcome aboard. If you are in GL5, the Cotswolds area is the local one to you. @Tom (T3OMF) - Cotswolds AO Tom Frankland is the Area Organiser if you wanted to know any more, but we meet on the last Thursday of every month at The Golden Heart at Nettleton Bottom on the A419 and you would be very welcome. We do runs out, trips abroad, days out to car shows, track days and other things, so is a very active area to be in.

  12. Collectors look a bit restrictive. Sounds like cams are your main route to finding more bhp though

  15. It’s doable with out removing the hubs, but there’s only really one position that you can thread the new stud through from the back in and maneuver it in to the hub, after which you have to keep turning the hub to line up for the next and so on.. I’ve done it on a few cars now, and I know plenty of others that have managed it. Just need a bit of patience and some Tetris playing skill when it comes to lining the things up.

  22. What a fantastic day. Thankyou to Gary, Jude, Terry, Emma, Carol, David, Di and Malc for taking part. Gary had a 850 mile round trip and Jude had a 400 mile round trip so a special thank you to you both for taking the time and effort to join us. The morning started with an early start at 5.30am with a drive to Middlesborough to meet Gary and Terry for our Christmas breakfast. This included Yorkshire puddings with breakfast gravy. I was really good and had a smallish breakfast but another person who will remain nameless had two, huge piles of food, one after the other. We had some great banter with the waitress and she invited us to her house for a meal once she found out about our secret that we all had in common. Following our breakfast it was a brisk two hour drive to my house where Jude wore our official outfits for our Switzerland trip......heaven help us all.....she's as mad as a hatter. Dinner followed in Scarborough where we met with everyone else. We all ordered our food and because some of us had a small breakfast we ordered a light lunch, except for one. He had just eaten two massive breakfasts and then had steak and kidney pudding with chips. Wont mention the earlier mince pies earlier. Amusements followed where we played on the penny pushers. We had a fantastic hour on one machine and just couldn't stop winning money. We tried to get icecreams but the two shops we liked where both shut....so.....it was karaoke time and coffee in the Lord Nelson pub. We had a brilliant day today and I just want to thank everyone once again for joining in.

  23. Here’s my suggestion. Mrs May stops being called to the EU at short notice. Write this message. Dispite our efforts, and our close friendship, we feel at present we are unable to reach an acceptable relationship. With regret we therefore intend to leave without a deal in March 2019. If the EU have any further ideas or suggestions they are welcome to visit the UK to discuss them. As always we look forward to a continuing friendship with the people of Europe and confirm that those EU members who currently live here are welcome to stay. Goodbye.
