  1. So, I've come up with an idea. I'm going to do the 3 peaks next spring (April most likely), in 3 days, using a Westfield that isn't even built yet as my transport https://forum.wscc.co.uk/forum/topic/130867-the-lobster-88-se-rebuild I know the 'proper' challenge is doing all 3 in 24 hours, but those people aren't doing the driving themselves in a home-built car, this is designed to combine two of my passions into one Given my location, it makes sense to do Snowdon first, then Scafell, then finally Ben Nevis. Will probably use the easy tracks up each, depending on how I'm feeling and what the weather is like. For driving, I'll aim to skip as many motorway miles as possible but Chester to Kendal is kinda slow without using the M56 / M6. Accommodation... Will probably stay at my place after Snowdon, then between Scafell and Fort William either grab a B&B / hostel or camp / bivvy if the forecast is solid. This is designed as a 'selfish' trip and something to give me a focus for the coming months, but if anyone is interested in joining me for any of it (the driving or the hiking!) then let me know and I'll put up an approximate schedule when I've calculated it. I'll be going at my own pace throughout though, and not either waiting for or rushing to keep with others Any tips / suggestions also welcome, of course!

  6. I'm in the USA so the car is left hand drive and therefore there is no way to install the left foot rest into the side panel. So I've done two things. First is that there is an adjustable foot rest that catches the edge of ball of my left shoe. It's adjustable fore/aft and for angle. I knew I'd never get it just right so I made it adjustable. It does a great job of letting the foot relax while cruising and never gets in the way while using the clutch. Secondly I made a heel rest for both feet. It's made of 1" x 1/4" aluminum bar and bent into shape. It allows me to brace my feet very securely while cornering and braking....and at the same time I can operate the throttle and brake with great modulation with my right heel braced against the heel rest. It is amazing how much difference the heel rest made for both comfort and for car control when driving at the limit. Without it it seemed impossible for me to have subtle throttle control while my heel slid around on the floor so my inputs tended to be jerky and anything but subtle. But once I made the heel rest I could brace my heel on it and then with great control meter out throttle and brake inputs. I tried driving without it after having it in place for some time and it felt so jerky and insecure. I think there are lots of ways to do this for sure and no doubt mine is not the best way....but that said it will help so much in terms of comfort and car control I strongly suggest that you try making one. dave

  10. Have a read of the "Machine That Changed the World" by Womack, Jones & Roos. It's a bit out of date now but a good look at car production methods over the years. Some manufacturers have changed more than others.

  11. Definitely listen to prudence if she calls - she may save your life! These can be serious environments, which I know you're aware of. Although these sorts of Nature's challenges are the most rewarding. Have done a lot of walking in Scotland in the early months. In May generally weather is much kinder and sunnier, although I have still ended up being out in full on blizzard Winter conditions. Which is fine if correctly equipped and competent navigating in near zero visibility.

  12. Very good! It's impossible to find a real race car that does not have some kind of heel brace and there's good reason for this. One of the biggest changes a driver can make to aid car control is to solidly hold their entire body as securely as possible so that they can control all the steering, brake and throttle inputs with great precision and subtly. This means a firm seat that does not bounce up and down, firm close fitting side bolsters, proper 5 point belts to hold the hips and torso securely in the firm seat and of course heel braces that keep the feet from sliding fore/aft on the floor. I've set up many of my own race cars over the years and helped friends set up there cars - everything from Boxsters to Atoms and a proper heel rest/brace is a real game changer. You don't know what you're missing until you try it and then you'll want one on every car you drive. They are more than worth the small effort to make. The lower the butt is compared to the feet the bigger difference it makes. dave

  20. Keep an eye out for collapsing rear suspension on those foresters if you do go down that route. Apparently their self levelling system was a bit of a weak point and not the cheapest fix. Otherwise, they're supposed to be a pretty tidy machine!

  22. Yep. Looks incredibly reliable... As per @AdamR recomendation of a Swapped Jinmy... Beemers and mercs, are starting to be ahead all. However, mercs are only in auto... therefore, or I'm flexible here, or i will have a beemer yes or yes. If I'm flexible in auto, then the Murano is A LOT of car for the money, and other than few electronic glitches, is a boom proof car... Then... I've seen some Forresters XTE... 2.5 manual 6 speed, sunroof, loads of equipment and relatively low milleage, and I could keep my subaru to canibalize alternators, gearboxes diffs and so... but therefore then I'm being open to the turbo stuff... If I'm open to the turbo stuff and to the autos... then I end buying something I didn't wanted from the begging and will be a mistake. Yeah, my life is overly complicated. XD

  26. Wel this is my first attempt to copy Davemk1. First drive today and i must agree with Dave's comment about control. It's made it sooo much better and enjoyable to drive. Thanks Dave. My next change will be to add some grip tape and fit the panel that Rusty sent me, more for when cruising and need to rest the clutch foot.

  27. Hi @si_salisbury, Look forward to meeting you on Sunday, fingers crossed that you can come, in a turbo'd 1.8 MX5 engined one too, goody, goody. I like MX5's and I like Westfield's so when you put them together it has to be a winner. Everyone in this group is really friendly and we are never the same group 2 weeks running, mainly because everyone comes from 1. miles away and 2.a different direction. It's a great recipe for a club get together. This weekend we are staying in the Southern end of the Peak District as I knew beforehand that people were coming from that area. Hats on and wrap up warm, it's going to be freezing xxxxx

  33. Only cars that fit all your needs are a BMW 3or 5 series 3.0. Saloon or estate. Merc C or E class 2.8 saloon or estate. They are about the the same price but you do need to see quite a few to find a a good one.
