Ok, ok why not... will have to find a house sitter for my dogs! So how does all this work guys, which hotels am I booking? Not all of them I hope? Does anyone know what sort of weather we are likely to encounter at that time of year in those places? Any advice on insurance etc? What else should I know? Do we double up on rooms to save money? I get to rest for the first bit while you all head to Folkstone!2 points

There will be habitable planets much closer than that. There are likely to be many thousands of planets in our own galaxy that are just as habitable as good ole Earth. Strictly speaking they are orders of magnitude nearer than the suggested 10 billion light years but practically speaking they are just as unreachable to us right now. Not forgetting of course that a habitable planet discovered at a distance of 10 billion light years could well have disappeared 5 billion years ago. We'll never know... [/pedantry]2 points

1) yes, I used a Dremel disc to get close, then a Dremel drum sander to finish off. I've now added some grill behind 2) I use a stick-on one on the nose cone 3) Mocal 13-row for my 2.0l Zetec. I also have an 80C oil stat and the sump oil comes up to 80C even on a cold day. On track, my oil has reduced from >130C to <105C The brackets are attached to rivnuts in the chassis front end, with a bit of rubber fuel hose on the bolts for isolation (the blue bits in the photo)1 point

Given how many planets have been discovered to date, there are likely billions that could support life as we know it (Jim) in our galaxy alone, let alone all the others. Getting there might be troublesome though.1 point

That one looks spookily familiar....I did the loom-on-the-floor thing about 2 years back for my project and I'm in the middle of cramming 5 lbs of wire into a 1lb bag right now. ....AND, they are copying AvE's sayings - Tits & Pickles, and Angry Pixies.1 point

Always difficult to price these things up. Widetrack front wishbones will be popular. But the rest will be all dependent on who is building what at the time. As a rule of thumb, desirable bits in very good condition can fetch up to 2/3 new price and less “shiftable” parts maybe 1/3 new or less. Also depends on time. More time can get you top dollar, but if you need to sell quick that equates to a lower price.1 point

eBay. I took pot luck and what I got isn’t bad. The vinyl on my dash isn’t the same as my seats so whatever you get will always have to be best guess.1 point

At least in the dark you cannot see all the rubbish that people have started to leave. An absolutely beautiful hidden gem getting spoilt by people who just don’t care.1 point

I just use a hose but with the tap only turned on a little to reduce the flow then a bucket and sponge with normal car shampoo followed by a quick dry with a microfiber . Then if I feel like it a quick wax or polish . I find for scratches old fashioned t-cut works well .1 point

Had a brilliant day out on Saturday. Travelled over to York to meet Michael then to Hemsley for coffee via Castle Howard. From there we went onto some of my favourite single track roads deep in the moors and we ended up at Hutton le Hole for dinner at the Crown Pub. Next stop where the kiln ovens at the top of Rosedale Chimney before making our way for tea at Levisham station. Steam trains where out in force and we where lucky to watch a couple. At one point we where lucky enough to take both cars for a paddle.1 point

Tied up with "things" on the sunny days this week! No plans for Friday, but grey start to the day. Sun appeared 3ish, so jump in the Westfield and we had a nice run down to Lyme Regis. Walk along The Cobb and an ice cream for tea, what more could you want. Nice run home as the sun was setting. Wall to wall sunshine this morning, so after walking the dogs, decided on another Westie trip to Dorset, this time to the village of Pallington east of Dorchester. Our destination was a place called "Sculpture by the Lakes" which friends had recommended. Fascinating place, a number of sculptures, mostly cast bronze in a lovely setting around, and in some lakes. Guy called Simon Gudgeon is the artist, his wife has created the gardens and lake settings, very creative couple. Very relaxed place, got its own cafe with good food and drink, they encourage visitors to relax and take their time wandering around. A few photos of some of the sculptures. Interesting place to visit, I'm not exactly an "arty" sort of person, but I enjoyed it, and was fascinated trying to work out how the sculptures were made. They're hollow, thin wall bronze, and think lost wax casting must feature in the way the sections are made. Can recommend this as a pleasant place to spend a relaxing rew hours if you happen to be in the area. Rounded off the day with a gentle chug home to Somerset.1 point

Indeed, in the long term, we will just be a footnote in the history of the planet and solar system. Let's not even consider the universe as a whole... What we should be feeling bad about is the mess we are making and how many innocent and helpless creatures we are killing off with our excesses. But that ain't going to happen I don't think. A few folk care and try to help, but the majority just don't give a stuff beyond where their next meal/fag/******* is coming from. So, yep, we are indeed doomed. Human extinction can't come soon enough for my liking.1 point

Over 99% of all species ever to have lived have died out (link) I feel we as humans, we are accelerating our little time on the planet, the cause of which are numerous but our greed being the greatest.1 point

Another job for the winter is to stop the water coming up under the sidescreens (doors). Despite having mudflaps, bubble-doors and adjusting the door strap to bring the door edge tightly against the body, I’m still getting a wet elbow in decent rain. I’ve seen a rubber weather-strip used on Rab (McWestie)’s car so will experiment with that. It’ll stick to the body just off the edge of the door and hopefully prevent water being wind-forced under it. The trick is going to be putting a curve in the strip to match the shape of the leading-to-under edge of the door, and making it all look like a factory option. We always use the doors when roof-less, so the strip shouldn’t be too obvious.1 point
